I am getting FIRED UP!

Join Me!  Over the coming months, I am going to take some steps to accomplish a very clean lifestyle, an anti0inflammatory diet, a reduced calorie diet (normally I don’t preach this, because I am high in fat, but I want to increase my fasting from Friday to multiple days a week).

We have some cool stuff.  So this week and next we will be talking up the suero challenge like crazy, and I would like everyone to try three days, just three days of this.  And perhaps some will go longer.  But anyone can do three days.

At the end of the Fall Break we will launch our next TOTAL FOOD MAKEOVER which will include 40 days of education including two shopping excursions.  I am working with a video editor to launch the Pantry Diaries finally (whew), so that is on the way.  And I want to do some two hour workshops in your environments, work, home, church, meetings, whatever.  We want to take the DIET education to a new level this Fall, and see how well we can do getting through Halloween with healthy families, and then keep that going until Thanksgiving Day.

Don’t we look happy here? Being passionate about something (health is a good option), makes you Happy!

Our practice has been growing again since the shoulder has been better, and I want to make sure that the new faces get a chance to see what we teach, and how effective it is.  I was adjusting the Friday AM before I left on vacation, and I was confronted with a room full of people who had lost from 20-40 lbs on the Advanced Plan, and I was amazed.  There were five people over the course of three minutes who I spoke with who had these results.  And I thought… its time.

So it is time.

If you are a HYPO-GLYCEMIC patient who weighs 100#, the Total Food Makeover is for you.  If you are weight loss resistant, it is for you.  You have to do it, and stick to it, and let your life be changed!  Before that, I need you to sign up for next weeks talk.  Don’t let me put all this effort into Tuesday night, then NOT have you come!  No way, too important, sure there is a strong Juice Plus educational side to it, but isn’t it about time you understood why we stand by this product so strongly.  Why it is better than green powder, super greens, or enzyme blends.  I am not naive, well, yes I am, but I am not when it comes to supplementation.  I have asked all the questions, and see the products.  My choices come with reason, so check it out next Tuesday Optimal Health Through Nutrition (and sign up, we need your name on the sheet, email Angel if you can’t get in).

Yep, fired up.  Lets get healthy… real healthy.  Cancer and heart disease need to start losing, and only we are going to make that happen!

Be well, be blessed, Dr. E

Boycott in Effect

Naturalnews.com – a Leader in Health education and investigative reporting in the health world, has called for a boycott of Larabar and Kashi, including other natural products.  Their reason for the boycott, is to take a stand for Proposition 37, which is n effort to force food companies to add labeling WHENEVER a GMO Food is used in a product.

I am confident that eventually laws will be passed to require GMO labeling, but I am greatly concerned that if proposition 37 does not go through, that we will be waiting a very long time before we will know for sure if what we are eating is GMO or not.  GMO (genetically modified organism), would be any organism that has had the genetic structure altered.  If you search through my daily sprouts for GMO, you will find MANY references, and great opportunities to brush up on WHY we cannot stand these.  I recommend all of my patients avoid these, but especially if you have any signs of immune compromise such as cancer, or chronic inflammatory conditions you  MUST avoid these.

So in the meantime, why a boycott of these “Natural” companies?  Silk, Kashi, Larabar and more are on their list.  But something important to figure out first, is why.  The reason is because these companies are owned by LARGER companies that have given money to the effort to stop Proposition 37.  So my point, is that you need to first STOP buying products from the larger companies if you want to make a difference.

Kashi is owned by Kellogg.  And though it would be a stand to stop buying Kashi, and to make a stink about it, you should be looking for ways to stop buying Kellogg first.  If you eat their cereals, guess what… you eat GMO’s every morning.  Silk is owned by Dean Foods, who also own Mayfield, Horizon Organic, Land O Lakes, PET, International Delight and more.  Cascadian Farms is also on this list of companies owned by larger companies trying to kill the proposition, General Mills, who is also the owner of Larabar.

I really think our stance has to be one of a unified desire to give yourself information.  Without the information of whether GMO ingredients are present in the foods you eat, you cannot decide to be GMO free or not, as it simply isn’t your choice.  And that is wrong.

I will continue to follow this debate, in the meantime, please read the article HERE.

There is great call for concern, when historically it seems as though any time we have tampered with the body through chemical introduction, we have caused problems.  And it usually takes a decade before we realize it.  Be well, stay healthy, Dr. E

Preparing for the August-September Suero Challenge

As we prepare for the August-September Suero Challenge, we wanted to refresh your mind.

So we are in the Suero Challenge for many of you, and some are getting ready to get started.  30 days of healthy cellular detox.  Build a healthier intestine, and utilize the cultured whey to drive your cellular metabolism.  This will improve your energy (if you have deficiencies in mineral content), it will improve your digestion (if you have deficiencies in healthy bacteria – this includes just about all of us), it will improve your energy systems (if you have low levels of cultured foods in your diet already), and it will help stabilize your blood sugar (if your leptin levels aren’t below 12 already).

The plan to acheive these wonderful goals over 30 days:

Basic Plan:

1. Drink One bottle of Suero Viv a day
2. Drink 64 ounces of water everyday, most with lemon or enhanced with minerals (artesian/sparkling)

Mid Plan:

1. Drink One to Two Bottles of Suero Viv per day
2. Drink 64 ounces of water everyday, most with lemon or enhanced with minerals (artesian/sparkling)
3. Eat no solid food for 6 hours each day, while drinking the Suero Viv over that time

Advanced Plan:

1. Drink two bottles of Suero Viv per day
2. Drink more than 64 ounces of water everyday, most with lemon or enhanced with minerals (artesian/sparkling)
3. Eat no solid food for 10-12 hours per day, while drinking the Suero Viv over that time
4. Take Daily Detox everyday

BONUS:

Stick to the advanced nutrition plan during this time (buy the green book)

I recommend purchasing three of each of the Suero Viv flavors from our office to get started (we are fully stocked).  They are $4.50 each, but we will cut the price to $4 if you buy six.  Then place an order by becoming a preferred customer ($20) at beyond organic, and then order three cases of the Suero (pick your favorite).  In order to sign up to be a preferred customer, you can go to my Beyond Organic Website Here and pick the preferred customer route (if you want to introduce these products to anyone else, you can pay $39.95 and then have your own website).

We’ll be throwing a Detox Closing Party/Healthy Spine Day at the office, and we’ll be cooking Beyond Organic Hot Dogs (100% Organic Grass Fed Beef) for our party!

I recommend everyone jump on this.  No matter who you are, where you are, or what you have been doing!  The reason why, is because anyone can do the Basic Detox Plan.  It is affordable, especially given its impact, and it takes minimal commitment!  Be well, live the toxin reduced and detoxifying improved, lifestyle!

God Bless all of you from Hilton Head!  – Dr. E

Fierce Pharma Reports MERCK suit for lies.

Two whistleblowers said that Merck failed to update a lack of effectiveness with their MMR vaccine, and in the process made false claims to the FDA to obtain government funding that should not have been available!

Merck has been put under the gun for false claims, and has been penalized severely in the past for wrongdoing.  $950M for Vioxx, $250k for failing to report routine followup studies on a diabetes med, and $1.6B in total fines for FRAUD reported by USA TODAY.

Basically Merck is bad.  You might have heard me tell the story from my patient who sold Mevacor (the first Statin Drug on the market, produced by Merck), back in 1987 when it was first released.  She talks about how they simply needed to get docs to sign up 100 patients, and that doc had a Hawaii vacation in the bag.  Part of the life of a late 1980’s drug pusher, as it so commonly seemed to become.

New laws have altered that fiasco, thus pushing large Pharma companies into even more wrongdoing it seems.

Check out the excerpt from this article regarding the MMR Vaccine and the whistleblowers:

Two former Merck ($MRK) employees lodged a whistleblower suit against the drugmaker, alleging that it overstated the effectiveness of its MMR vaccine. The False Claims Act lawsuit says Merck didn’t revise its claims about the combination shot’s efficacy, despite the fact that it had become less effective. So, the employees say, government health programs paid for the product for 10 years without knowing it didn’t live up to the company’s claims.

As Dow Jones reports, Merck disputes the allegations, calling them “completely without merit.” The company also points out that the Justice Department has declined to join the whistleblower suit, which was filed two years ago, but unsealed last Thursday in a Pennsylvania federal court.

European Commission Report Recommends Phasing Out Dental Amalgam

With the upcoming Suero Challenge (get ready we are going strong for the next six weeks, leading up to the Total Food Makeover which will start after the Fall Break), I decided that this Mercola article would make a great lead in Daily Sprout.  In addition, it will help you get a feeling for HOW important cleaning out the system is, but then how important it is to  live clean.

Over the years, we have given about six different detoxification workshops, and EVERY ONE of them has hit on the importance of cleaning out the mercury in your teeth.  So to see this article, makes me happy.  Phasing out is long overdue, but it has to start somewhere.

What does your mouth look like?

If you are like me, you got silver (amalgam) fillings growing up, and now they leech mercury into your system.  Don’t trust that, then be sure to go online if you are reading this on a sheet of paper in my office, and watch this video:

Smoking teeth, that is exactly what those are.  From Mercola’s Article :

It’s important to understand that the term “silver filling” is profoundly deceptive, as the composite material contains anywhere from 49 to 54 percent mercury, not silver. The American Dental Association (ADA) has historically covered up this fact, and at one time even declared that removing mercury fillings is unethical — despite the known fact that dental amalgam emits mercury vapor after it is implanted in your mouth, and this mercury is bioaccumulative and endangers your health in many ways.

Mercury is one of the most difficult substances to remove from the body, so our goal has always been to not put it in.  But once it is in, improving glutathione production really just makes sense.  We prefer Daily Detox as the method to accomplish this, and support using this product during the Suero Challenge.  Suero is primarily used to enhance the gut, by giving it an incredible boost or probiotics, while stimulating gut healing through minerals from cultured whey.  The challenge is to drink two Suero-Viv bottles per day for two weeks, and during this two weeks, to remove most of all other foods, except for some greens.  It might require more than two Suero’s per day, but it is a great step towards healing the gut.  Why?  Because it is the most common place to absorb toxins.

Sure the mouth is key in mercury problems, but it has been postulated that most of the mercury absorption from amalgam fillings, still is through the gut.  Look at the EU report from the Mercola article:

“The current levels of mercury pollution in the EU are such that all the EU population is exposed to mercury above the natural background level and certain population groups such as high-level fish consumers, women of childbearing age and children are subject to high risk levels, principally due to their high exposure and/or high vulnerability to mercury in the form of methylmercury, which is ingested through the diet…”

The diet.  The diet is the problem.  Clean.  Lets get there!  More to come on the Suero Challenge, but start looking at your best two weeks during the next six to get committed.  Be well, be BLESSED!  – Dr. E

Going For The Gold…

Olympic good, that is how good you need to be in your knowledge of health if you want to make sure you are giving your family the best opportunity for long term health.  Yes, this part is paramount, OLYMPIC GOOD is necessary!

But read it again… olympic good at what?  Not your commitment to health decisions, not your ability to hold yourself to a workout or a perfect diet.  Not your ability to get in for every adjustment and every moment of home care (traction, headweights, specific exercises); no these are SUPER important, but more important is the knowledge behind them.

Now, doesn’t that seem opposite what you would think?  We always talk about how knowledge is useless without action, and how in a world where there are so many diet books, why are we so obese?  Because of lack of action!

So why would I put knowledge as the top need?  Because knowledge allows you a path to discernment.  We teach the culmination of years of testing, over hundreds to thousands of chiropractors (the Max Living group) to hundreds of patients who visit these offices each week.  This adds up to several hundred thousand people who have been touched by the diet efforts that we teach.   Somewhere around 100,000 people who have learned that short high intense exercise is best, and that living a detoxification lifestyle is better than the buzz word “detox”.

YET, we still see so many people who come to us telling us they are eating a healthy diet, we ask what, and they say low fat (makes me cringe to hear that).  I hope you realize that any low fat diet is going to be high carb, and that is the worst thing possible.  I see people who ask me how much cardio they need, and when I say their 12 minute burst is all the cardio they need, they think I am crazy.  But if they come to a workshop and listen to fifteen minutes on why, they think we are brilliant.

So, you see, to be Olympic Good, starts with knowledge.  Team USA is really good, across the board.  Right now China has 61 medals, USA has 60, UK 37, and the dropoff is pretty good from there.  Why do these countries lead?  Because they have an incredible base of knowledge about what works, and what doesn’t.  Have you noticed how different the swimming strokes look today than 12 years ago?  Its like they have been completely morphed by knowledge… swimming under the oncoming wave in a turn, slapping the water madly in the freestyle vs. the controlled graceful pull of the past.

I don’t expect anyone of you to be any better than the next at being committed.  This is a difficult world when it comes to diet and exercise.  Stress, and getting to the chiropractor.  But if there is one thing I know, if you let yourself be exposed to good knowledge, the effort at pulling away from cultural living becomes less effort, and more natural.  We are here to help that path.

As the workshops start to be announced again, I would push you to gain some knowledge and be at these workshops, whenever you can.  Culture will tell you chiropractic is unnecessary, that your diet cannot impact overall health, that exercise is best done 60 minutes at a time.  And sadly, this same culture is dying from heart disease and cancer at the rate of 2/3 of our population.

Gain insight, be well and blessed!  Dr. E

Action is Eloquence – by Miranda Oldroyd

This is a great story, one that I can pull a bunch of positive learning opportunities from, and simply great education.  Check out this abbreviated version from a well known CrossFitter employed by CrossFit Headquarters. FULL STORY HERE

CrossFit is Dangerous??? And How It Very Literally Saved My Life.

For years I have said that CrossFit has changed my life!  I have said over and over again that it SAVED my life because of how it changed me as a person and brought such a passion back into my days.
Well, now I can say it LITERALLY… CROSSFIT SAVED MY LIFE!!!
But, CrossFit is so dangerous right???  High rep olympic lifting!  Muscle ups! Rope climbs!!  You could hurt your back!  What if you fall from the rope or the rings?!!  You can’t have perfect technique when you are moving that fast!!  You might lose your positioning!!
What is dangerous??  You tell me…..
The few months preceding June 30th (2012)….were chalk full of all that crazy stuff!!  I mean, I had been training with 2 of the most INTENSE athletes in all of CrossFit, Jason Khalipa and Neal Maddox (and the soon to be well known Garret Fisher).  I would show up every day and just try to do what they do….including TONS of heavy oly lifting, 3-4 workouts a day, ring muscle up to handstand push ups (yep…I am bad).  I was more fit than ever and so excited about the progress I was making.  So, how could training with these movements under such intensity actually SAVE someone’s life??  My life??
On June 30th (2012), I was out and about doing something completely NOT dangerous….grabbing coffee for my co-workers from the Level 1 CrossFit Seminar team.  In fact, THEY all stayed behind to work out!!  Round trip it was about 2 miles…something you and I, all of us, do every day.
I was turning left on a pretty busy 6 lane road, but had an arrow…..and within an instant…found myself smashed across 3 lanes and on the sidewalk facing the opposite direction.
Immediately when the car stopped I was in severe pain, mostly in my neck.  Both of my hands were on the dashboard and I was leaned toward the passengers side.  Because my neck hurt so badly I just kept repeating to myself out loud “you’re ok…don’t move…it’s ok…”.  All of the airbags were deployed and the entire passengers side where I was looking (trying not to move) was MANGLED.  The door panel and glove box were almost unrecognizable.  The windshield had shattered and I had glass, and coffee, ALL over me.  I was bleeding but I didn’t know from where.  I was too scared to look…too scared and in too much pain to move.
Luckily, there was an ambulance that saw the whole thing go down.  Pretty quickly I had someone talking to me.  I realized my hand hurt…and shortly after learned why.  The paramedic (I think….I couldn’t turn to see any of these people) asked me to turn the car off.  I couldn’t.  Because somehow I had managed to karate chop the keys during the accident and break the key of in the ignition…..with my hand.
In the ER I was super excited to learn that my nurse was a CrossFitter, and also super embarrassed that she recognized me.  I didn’t have to wait too long before a Dr came by.  They did some tests of my reflexes…if I could feel and move both of my hands and feet.  Took me to x ray my hand.  I think I probably asked 7 times if I was going to die or be paralyzed.  I also kept telling the Dr. that my neck hurt much worse than my hand.  I asked at least 3-4 times if I needed a neck X ray.  Because of my concern he checked my neck out a little bit more…poked at it a bit…but still no X ray.  I was SO happy and relieved when he told me it wasn’t broken, just really bad whiplash.
What was really cool was that everyone…from the paramedic to the cop on scene to my coworkers who saw the accident to my ER Dr told me “If you weren’t so strong….you would be in a LOT worse shape.  We have seen people killed, necks snapped, from that exact same accident.  Your muscle saved you.”
And that was it.  In the most pain I had ever experienced in my life, the nurse helped me sit up (the pain was so bad I literally almost blacked out).  They gave me a prescription for some pain pills, told me to find an orthopedic surgeon to cast my hand when I got home, and I was out of there.  Moving at all was excruciating.  Any little bump in the road, turning, getting in and out of the car…sitting, standing.  I couldn’t turn my head in any direction AT ALL.  They gave me one of those little soft collars, but no real direction on if I needed it or for how long.
After having a REALLY difficult time finding a Orthopedic doc to cast my hand (it was next to impossible to get an appt), I was finally able to go up and meet Dr. Bhuva in San Jose.  Dr. Bhuva noticed how painfully I was moving with my neck as he was casting my hand and asked if I had my neck x-rayed after the accident.  When I told him that I hadn’t, he was shocked!  He told me that he wasn’t the right type of Dr. to treat neck injuries, but would not feel comfortable letting me leave without checking it out.  To be honest, I was somewhat relieved to have it looked at.  They took the x-ray and said that it was probably nothing, but they would let me know.
My neck continued to “feel” better and better.  So I continued to do more and more with it.  I rode the airdyne bike, climbed stairs with a weight vest, and was starting to be able to turn it a LOT more.  Whether or not I was going to be doing my job at the (CrossFit) Games was still up in the air, but I was confident I would feel good in time.
Fast forward to Tuesday, July 17th (2012).
I headed down to San Jose that day for a follow up appt. for my hand to get a new cast and then to train at NorCal CrossFit!  When I walked into the Dr’s office and checked in EVERYONE, from the woman at the desk to the nurse to the assistant to the Dr said they were SO WORRIED about me!  They said they had been trying to contact me all week!
Why??  There was something weird with my x-ray.  Again, Dr. Bhuva is not a neuro-surgeon, but said that it looked like I might have a slipped facet joint.  He explained to me that it could be kind of serious and that I needed to get a CT Scan and see a neuro surgeon.  I explained that I was headed to Florida for a seminar on Friday.  He explained that I wasn’t going ANYWHERE until having this checked out.
They found me an appt. to get the scan right away, which was going to make me miss my workout with some of the boys, but I decided I better play along…  After the medical goose chase, I was FINALLY at the gym getting ready to work out when my husband called.  He was frantic. “Babe, you need to call this Dr. back.  He keeps calling me.  They said it’s an emergency about your neck scan.” he said.  I spoke with a Dr. Fox who had just read my scan.  This is how it went.
Dr. Fox: Miranda, I was just handed your scans from this afternoon.  I know you have an appt. with a neuro-surgeon in 2 days, but you need to go to an ER RIGHT NOW.  You have a break in 2 places in your C2 vertebrae.  I honestly can’t believe you have been walking around like this for the past 2 weeks.  You are in serious danger.  Any little fall, or bump or wrong twist of the head and you could be a quadrapolegic for the rest of your life.  Can you get to a hospital?  Where are you?
Me: (in tears and shaking) Yes.  I am in San Jose on Saratoga and Stevens Creek.
Dr. Fox:  Ok, you need to go right now, don’t drive yourself, to the nearest ER.  It is O’Connor Hospital.  Tell them you have a VERY unstable C2 fracture.  Do you have any questions?
Me: Yes.  Should I be as terrified as I am right now?
Dr. Fox: Yes.  You are in serious danger walking around like that.  If you were a member of my family I would have you in the car on the way to the ER right NOW.  Tell the person driving to drive VERY carefully.
At this moment, I was the most scared I have ever been in my entire life.  I was afraid to even move.  I couldn’t believe what I just heard and I was positive that at any moment I was going to be paralyzed.  I was shaking, my heart was pounding as I went from excited to train to worried if I was going to be able to walk tomorrow.
I was told AGAIN, by the neurosurgeon now, that the strength of my neck saved me from having much more serious complications with the break…as well as that muscle acting as a legit neck brace for 2 1/2 weeks to keep that vertebrae stable.  In the morning, I was given two options for treatment: surgery or 3 months in a halo.  I consulted a few Drs who also understand CrossFit and my personal goals, and chose surgery.
This is a very abbreviated version, you can click  HERE to read the rest (language concern).
 Dr. Eric –
My points of education in this.  First off, don’t discount the JAMA published study that says that 250,000 people die every year due to medical errors.  That is real, and this would likely have been one of them in most cases.  You are your own advocate, remember that.  Any time we have a patient with any kind of auto accident, we take three cervical x-rays, one in neutral position, one in flexion and one in extension, so that we can see any instability in the spine.
Next – she was told by multiple people that she was saved by the strength of her body.  Not the flexibility (which is still also important), but the strength, which creates protection in a moment of impact.  I have heard people talk about going limp in a car accident… you might think you are going limp, but you have a reflex which you cannot control which will tighten muscles to protect ligaments and bones.  This is important.  Get strong, not rich with endurance, but strong.
Last – The medical mentality is usually one that operates out of fear.  This is what they do.  Have you ever had anyone else you know that was told, “if you don’t do this you will die”?  Or “this is necessary, you don’t have a choice”?  Even though Miranda’s injury was/is very serious, she did a lot without any additional injury.  Had they found her injury early, and if she had refused treatment and said she was planning on walking around, doing life, working out, etc.  They would have said, “you will surely die then.”  I get the urgency, and in Miranda’s situation, I see the need for treatment.  But did you notice that one option was a halo?  Basically, don’t do anything, but make sure you don’t do anything that could hurt you.  An option other than treatment that doesn’t result in death… huh?
My point in this, many times what is said to be necessary in the medical model, is not.  Advocate for yourself, dig in, find answers.  It would have taken Miranda three months to heal without surgery, and in the end I would have chosen surgery.  But what if you could avoid another treatment or surgery by making three months of lifestyle change?  I think it might be worth it.
Be well, be blessed, Dr. E

Certain CHANGE is worth an effort…

Change.org = controversial.  There are some things that come across this email system that I do not agree with.  But I sometimes  find great value in their efforts.  This is one of those.

The timing is SAD, because the BPA restriction happened awhile ago in so many other countries (Canada is one), but  in the USA there was a push back, and so many “experts” came out and said “it is too early to say that BPA is bad”.  I wonder if  the time that was given was just enough to allow the major food companies to get it out of certain products without missing a moment of profit.  This is from the email I received today:

The FDA just announced that baby bottles and sippy cups can no longer contain bisphenol A (BPA), a controversial hormone-disrupting chemical that studies show is linked with cancer, obesity, heart disease, and other life-threatening diseases.

This is a huge step towards getting dangerous chemicals out of our food supply. BPA isn’t just found in baby products – routine tests have found BPA in more than 80% of Americans’ bodies. It’s used in packaging food, lining cans for soups and sodas, and more.

Protecting my kids doesn’t stop when they graduate from bottles and sippy cups. I am counting on the FDA to help regulate this dangerous chemical so the people I care about most in the world are safe — no matter how old they are.

I know that together we can make a difference. Last year, I helped pass a ban on BPA in children’s products in my own community in Oregon. Doctors, researchers, and medical experts testified about the risks of this chemical and the importance of keeping BPA out of our children’s bodies. I was moved to tears by the hundreds of people who signed my Change.org petition in support of that campaign, and I hope this petition will make the FDA take notice, too.

Major brands have already begun distancing themselves from BPA due to consumer outrage. These companies have shown great leadership, but moving company by company and product by product is taking too long. BPA will continue to make people sick until it’s out of our food supply for good. We need strong action from the FDA now to protect us, and our kids, from these dangerous chemicals.

Tell the FDA to ban BPA now.

The reason I find so much value in this message, is simply that BPA is bad.  Its the truth.  The announcement came to me via The New York Times, and as I would think to write, so did they… about the fact that this ban leaves so many products on shelves, that are rich with BPA.  And sadly, it goes unnoticed in most of those, even by wary and considerate consumers.  This is a problem.

Does it bother you that our government is slow to act?  That we have the highest expenditures of any country in the world on our “healthcare”, yet our health is awful?  So much waste and inefficiency in our system.  The New York Times points out:

The F.D.A. declared BPA safe in 2008, but began expressing concerns about possible health risks in 2010.

Really?  Really?  Come on… SAFE then two years later, unsafe?  These are not idiots, these are scientists who can see the writing on the wall, but their position statement is all about security for the large corps using the BPA, and the reality that they would lose millions if they were told that their products are no longer any good.

And I get it.  Our country doesn’t need an employer losing millions.  We are bad enough right?  But tell that to the parent of the child with an odd cancer that developed in their teens… or the child of a mom who has been using BPA for years and ends up with a liver cancer that spreads everywhere.  “Sorry, but you are a sacrifice that had to be made… its for the good of the country you know”.

6 Nutritional Pitfalls to Sidestep at Your Neighborhood BBQ – From Maximized Living

article by Kimberly Roberto (West Cobb Chiropractic, Co-Author of Maximized Living Nutrition Plans)
Each year, summertime brings fun-filled cookouts, parades and festivals. But just how much danger is lurking in your favorite summer foods?
Who doesn’t enjoy a burger fresh off the grill and neighborhood potlucks with jello, potato salad and homemade ice cream? Summer may be known as a time to relax, but if we relax our food awareness too much, we can wind up ruining all of our summer fun.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently issued a warning that our (United States) “war” on obesity was developing into an epidemic.1 That means we are almost at plague status!
And what is helping cause this epidemic? Refined and processed foods filled with mysterious additives. Hidden ingredients meant to make our food “look” fresh, “taste” great and “enrich” our diets through chemicals or animal by-products.
Let’s take a closer look at some of our favorite summer foods, and see what might be hiding behind attractive, well-marketed labels.
• Gelatin Products – That jiggly, refrigerated, artificially flavored goodness gets its jiggle from collagen, a protein most often collected from animal skins and bones. The gelatin in our favorite summer desserts, for instance, comes mainly from pig skin and bones.2 Many dessert gelatin products also contain harmful artificial sweeteners or are loaded with refined sugars.
• Hot Dogs –Almost all commercial brands of hot dogs contain Mechanically Separated Meat. Most often associated with Mad Cow Disease, MSM is often a paste of meat that was left clinging to the bones of a chicken or pig, then forced through a sieve by a high pressure process. “You have crushed bits of bone and cartilage and other things that can end up in that final paste,” according to Sarah Klein, a staff attorney for the Food Safety Program at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.2 It is the sum of many parts. One hot dog can come from hundreds of pigs or cows.
• Hamburgers — For those of you who don’t know, “pink slime” is basically low-grade fatty beef trimmings, treated with the toxic household cleaner ammonia to kill bacteria lurking in the trimmings. It’s then re-labeled as “Lean Finely Textured Beef,” and added to ground beef as filler. Over 10 billion pounds of pink slime is released into our food chain each year, ending up not only in much-maligned fast food, but also into the National School Lunch Program.2 In addition, this meat comes from sick, grain-fed cows.
• Chicken – Fried or grilled, your favorite summer bird may just be “filled” or “enhanced” with enough saltwater to land you in the emergency room soon after dinner. Saltwater is added to poultry to enhance flavors or increase the weight of the meat before being sold. Read the fine print. Chicken injected with up to 10 percent of a solution or as much as 15 percent chicken broth can contain more than five times the amount of sodium (300mg and up) found in a 4 oz. serving of regular chicken. Your piece of enhanced chicken can contain enough sodium to spike your blood pressure, and end your day in the hospital.2
• Ready-To-Eat Meats/Deli Products – The next time you are in the grocery store, proceed with caution when selecting a prepackaged deli meat.  Packaging meat always increases its risk of containing bacteria. That is why many pre-packaged meat products are treated with “bacteriophage preparation.” This is when a food manufacturer sprays the package with bacteria-killing viruses hoping to kill off any harmful bacteria.2 Nitrites are another hidden danger found in deli or prepackaged meats. Nitrites are there to keep meat looking fresh (rather than a dull gray). Unfortunately, they are known carcinogens and have been banned in many countries. Diets high in processed foods, especially deli meats, have been linked to pancreatic, colorectal and stomach cancers.3
• Grilled Meats – The big problem here are acrylamides. These dangerous by-products come from heating meats at high temperatures (frying or grilling), and large amounts are found in potato chips and French fries. According to the National Cancer Institute, “A series of case-control studies have investigated the relationship between dietary intake of acrylamide and the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, larynx, large bowel, kidney, breast and ovary.”3 There is an easy solution to this BBQ dilemma. To avoid the formation of acrylamides in meats:  Marinade meat before cooking to help prevent the formation of acrylamides (use a combination of olive oil, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, and anti-cancer spices like tumeric and garlic), and do not char the meat. It is better to cook longer at lower temperatures, away from the direct flame.  If you are not familiar with some of these ingredients, consult your favorite BBQ master. They have all the secrets to a great grill!
Avoid these dangers lurking in your favorite summer foods so you can enjoy the best parts of summer. Use the resources and new products in our supermarkets to ensure your favorite foods to be both delicious and healthy.
Remember to read all labels. Just because something claims to be 100 percent natural does not mean it’s good for you. Look for grass-fed beef, free-range organic poultry and nitrate-fee, minimally processed deli meats.
And don’t forget to frequent your local farmers market. They often have the freshest produce and supply the best organic meats.

Emily… prayers please.

It was only a few weeks ago, when one of my patient families was sitting in the hot seats, and I thought “I’m glad they are here, it is always good to get this family adjusted”, and as the kids filtered through, their mother shared with me a tragic story that she was right in the middle of.

Her “away at school” daughter (Emily Sue), 20 years old, was in a major accident… this is from her daughter’s care page:

Emily is a student at SAIC in Chicago, IL. On Sunday, July 8th, She fell 30 feet and sustained major injuries. Her back is broken in two places, her pelvic bone is cracked, her leg, ankle and foot are broken. However, she is ALIVE and God has protected the gift He gave her – the ability to create art.

As she told me about the accident, she explained how she was the one to receive the call… “Are you sitting down?  Your daughter fell four stories and is now paralyzed.”  Fortunately, the paralysis was only temporary, as the swelling went down, function returned.  Talk about a fearful moment, what do you do with a call like that?  Act… pray.

Now she has been up and down, back and forth, but ultimately moving forward.  Not charging, like a tailback making his way through a hole in the line, but more like the efforts of a new flower, working to shed its petals and reach for the sun.  It is slow, and all who witness it wish it would just happen.  I am sure right now Emily’s family and herself share this common desire, to just get well.

Healing is a slow process, and often times we ignore the underlying thing that heals.  But put it in the right perspective… your brain, is sending some kind of message, how it is communicated, we really don’t know.  Chemicals in just the right frequency, or amplitude, or something; are sent down the spinal column to a receiving tissue.  That tissue somehow deciphers those signals to make a message, to activate DNA strands out of thousands, to formulate just the right proteins to tell each individual cell (of millions) to heal.

There is an intelligence in the cell, that just might eclipse what we think is possible. Consider this, your thoughts, those you are having right now… where are they coming from?  One cell?  Twenty, fifty million, fifty billion?  How do these cells work together to let you think fluidly?  Could you without one of those cells?  What if there were fifty million less?  Do you see the trap that we are in?  Too much intelligence within the cells, for us to understand what gives us intelligence.  Science continues to stay stumped by this.  Check out more of Emily Sue’s story below.

Emily is recovering from her 3rd surgery. The Dr. said it went well-meaning he was able to accomplish his goals with regards to her foot. Screws were placed, bones were moved, cleaned out and a bone graft for her heel was done. She was given a nerve block to her left leg but that is wearing off. The pain was to be expected, but seeing your child in so much pain is simply heartbreaking. The nurses have been so kind & have tried to get her more relief as soon as a doctor would order it. After about an hour, she finally fell asleep- partly from sheer exhaustion & the assistance of increased pain medicine. Tim is staying with her tonight.

As I sat in the taxi back to the apartment, I was struck by the number of people out & about. I just thought, Lord, life goes on, doesn’t it? So many people, who knows what their story is? Are they hurting, happy, or something in between? How many of us walk through life pretending to be ok just for the sake of saving face? How many walk around without hope? How many people simply need to know about Christ? Life just goes on. It’s easy to forget when you spend most of the day in a hospital room. As Emily cried out in pain, we reminded her that this won’t last forever! There is an end to the pain! It’s true for you & me, too. The pain & heartbreak that this life gives us does not last forever! Through Christ we have hope for an eternity of glory with God.

As hard as it is to believe when you are in the middle of “it” – God doesn’t waste one tear, one heartbreak, one hurt … He will use it for His glory if we let him.

As hard as tonight was, it was a privilege to speak words of truth to Emily tonight; to remind her that’s she’s going to be ok, she will make it through this!

Please continue to lift her up and ask the Lord to help her manage
The pain. I told the surgeon that Many were praying for not only Emily, but for him & his team as well. I’m not sure what he thought of that but I’m trusting that it was a seed planted.

We love you & love getting your messages…
