Ashlee’s Story

We asked our own Ashlee Shedd to share her story. Like so many, Ashlee needed the 60 Day Turnaround for reasons other than weight loss. We see in Ashlee a growing sense of her own value. When we realize how much impact that we can make in the lives of others, we can see clearly how important it is that we are feeling and performing at our best.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”  A very common saying but so true with many things in life. While my story is not one of weight loss, it is definitely one of lifestyle change.

3 1/2 years ago I battled with my own form of sugar addiction, alcohol. A substance that was ruining many aspects of my life, my health being a major one. After making a commitment to sobriety, additional lifestyle changes also needed to be made. 1 year in I found crossfit. Crossfit gave me a healthy outlet to gain a level of self achievement as well as release tension and promote a healthier lifestyle, but I was still missing the key ingredient, nutrition. September 2016 I started and completed my first 60 Day Turnaround! Prior to that I knew the basics on living a balanced lifestyle but I didn’t have sound education on the “why’s” to back it up. I still had some major healing that needed to happen from previous damage to my gut and liver due to the substance abuse. 60 Day allowed my body to begin the healing process through natural foods and by completely cutting out sugars and carbs I was able to reduce inflammation and start rebuilding healthy functioning cells.

We all have a different story and background on why we need to change the way we eat. While I may have looked healthy on the outside, my body, my machine, needed internal work. This program is what helped me and continues to help me through it! Years of damage cannot be undone in 60 Days BUT continued efforts allow my body to continue healing. This program was not about weight loss for me, this program is about a complete reboot of my system and training it to function the way I was designed to! I needed to become a healthier and stronger version of myself not just for me but for my family.

“This program was not about weight loss for me, this program is about a complete reboot of my system and training it to function the way I was designed to! I needed to become a healthier and stronger version of myself, not just for me, but for my family.”

I am a constant work in progress but I am grateful for the Lords grace in my transition and for a chance to be able to live a full and balanced life!”

Les & Amanda’s Story

We want to tell you the Story of Les and Amanda White.

Amanda tells the story best…

(Please note: weight loss is not the primary issue here.)

Les was diagnosed with diverticulitis, which is basically a disease of the colon that comes from eating a Western diet and being old. Les was only 30-something and I decided we had to do something to heal him. I started looking up all the natural-type doctors I could think of–Dr. Oz, Dr. Weil, etc. Then, I remembered my mom had been to Dr. Eric several years ago. I looked up his website and saw that he was started a healthy-living class the DAY BEFORE. I emailed Eric and said, “I’m so-and-so’s daughter and can my husband join the class a week late.” He said yes, my husband was at the next class and it changed his life. He jumped into the 60 days (probably for about 6months total), lost 45-ish pounds, began regular chiro visits and started CrossFit. IT CHANGED HIS LIFE.

“He jumped into the 60 days (probably for about 6months total), lost 45-ish pounds, began regular chiro visits and started CrossFit.
IT CHANGED HIS LIFE.”

And as always happens when the husband leads the way, it changed our whole family. I reluctantly joined the 60 days with him (even tho’ I didn’t think I needed to b/c I was skinny, I bought organic veggies, I ground my own wheat for goodness’ sakes!) and about day 5 I thought I was going to die. I felt like I was walking through water. Day 6 I walked into the house from grocery shopping, dropped the bags on the floor, and barely made it into the bedroom to fall on the bed unable to move from weakness/low-sugar. After the 7th day, my energy picked up and MY life started changing. Where I was once always thinking about what piece of chocolate I might pick up or how much longer till the next meal, I wasn’t hungry any more. I didn’t have to jump out of bed and eat breakfast within minutes of waking. I didn’t have to eat lunch right at noon. Food wasn’t controlling me. Cookies/chocolate/sweets that used to call my name were a now just a random food that I could easily pass over without a blink.

“Where I was once always thinking about what piece of chocolate I might pick up or how much longer till the next meal, I wasn’t hungry any more. I didn’t have to jump out of bed and eat breakfast within minutes of waking. I didn’t have to eat lunch right at noon. Food wasn’t controlling me.”

I didn’t grow up with exercise and health a priority in my life. It’s been awesome to have my kids understand how food affects them, to know about real food, to see how important it is to take care of their bodies thru exercise. Not so we can look better–but so we can live better. So, we can do more and better for the things God has called us to.

Food Guilt

Food guilt.

A problem that often attaches itself to people for different reasons. Most commonly of course, we associate it with eating things that we wish we hadn’t eaten.

A different type that can come from people who are pursuing healthy choices, is to create that feeling of guilt in others about their choices.

As I was checking out of Publix, they were offering an opportunity to support local families who need assistance in purchasing food. Of course my first thought, “I don‘t eat that food, I wouldn’t advise anybody eat that food, this phone is no good for your body!”

My next thought was, “you are not producing organic food and offering it up to the poor, you are not farming grass fed beef and giving it away… You are not making healthy food choices available to the world for free, and until you do, Eric, you need to be charitable in your heart.”

So I gave them some money, and they gave me this bag.

Sabrina’s Story

Sabrina has a great story to tell!

She drove an hour and a half to join our classes because she was struggling with hip and elbow joint discomfort, so much that she couldn’t pick up her grand baby without excruciating pain. “I happened across a live feed that was shared by my friend Lisa. It caught my attention as Dr. Eric was introducing the 60 Day Turnaround. I hooked up my headphones and listened as he discussed how the foods we eat cause inflammation in our bodies, which in turn makes us sick.”

Sabrina experienced a true turnaround as she worked with the team to change her lifestyle. “With the support of my friend, I completed my first 60 Day Turnaround with great success! I noticed a HUGE difference in my joints (pain totally went away) within the first few weeks. I broke my addiction for sugar (don’t worry – there are LOTS of delicious non-sugar sweet recipes that satisfied my sweet tooth).”

“I noticed a HUGE difference in my joints (pain totally went away) within the first few weeks. I broke my addiction for sugar!”

She also lost 38 pounds, which was a secondary benefit. “I had struggled to keep my weight down as I was a “sugarholic”. I could lose the weight, but it would always come back because the diets I tried were not sustainable. I didn’t want to count points, log calories, or spend 8 hours a day in the gym because these ideas didn’t work with my idea of a fun lifestyle.”

The best part? She has been able to continue with her new way of living life and continues to succeed in managing her health. “I have kept the weight that I lost off for a year now by adopting this eating plan as a way of life!”

We are so proud of the hard work that Sabrina put into her 60 Day Turnaround!

“I am SO thankful to my friend, Lisa as well as Dr. Eric and his vision to help people adopt a truly sustainable eating plan and lifestyle.”

Katy’s Story

This is the story of Katy – 38 years old, a wife, a mother of four, a free-lance graphic designer

Here’s her 60 Day Turnaround story…

_____

“I had two goals when I started the 60 Day Turnaround program:

First, to lose weight. I’d had four kids, including a set of twins.  My entire adult life, I’d felt like it was a struggle to stay at a healthy weight. I felt unhealthy, weighed the most I’d ever weighed, and wanted to change that.  Not just for me, but to set a good example for my children.  I wanted to get off the “diet & exercise” roller coaster!  I just wanted something simple that would actually work!

My second goal was to see if the 60 Day Turnaround would help with a skin condition I’ve had since I was in high school, called “tinea versicolor,” that causes a blotchy rash to appear on my back.  Apparently it’s hereditary.  And it had gotten to the point where it was obvious and I was embarrassed to show my back.  I went to the dermatologist to see if there was anything I could do to get rid of my skin condition and they told me, “Not really. You’re just one of the lucky ones that will have to deal with it your entire life.” and handed me a prescription ointment.  I didn’t actually use the ointment.  I decided to see if the program would work first.

So I started to program as an experiment to see if my diet would in fact help my skin condition. And it did! Within 2 weeks my back wasn’t itchy anymore and the rash was gone!!! I could wear tank tops again and not be embarrassed!

I also lost 20 pounds in two months!  My cravings were gone, my head was clearer than ever, my skin was clear and I felt great! Not only did the 60 Day Turnaround help me achieve my goals, but I had never felt healthier!”

A few things I learned while going through the 60 days:

  • If you can get through the first three days without sugar, you are good to go!
  • It takes about 2 weeks to get over the “hump”
  • After about 2 weeks, the cravings go away, which is the best part – no more cravings!
  • Keep your pantry and fridge stocked with healthy snacks to munch on for those “weak” times
  • Water, water and lots of water!
  • JuicePlus+ is awesome and a great way to get all the veggies in! (Ask Dr. Eric about it!)
  • An easy breakfast or snack is a quick protein shake (I use the Maximized Living Grass Fed Whey Protein Powder – also ask Dr. Eric!)

Putting Off Health

Written by: Dr. Mark

A few weeks ago I wanted to write about all the excuses we use to NOT pursue our health. Excuses to avoid the gym, to not eat healthy, or more likely to eat the UN-healthy. It was on my mind because I have “started” the Straight 60 plan a number of times, but didn’t have the commitment needed to stay with it. Then found myself in a place of saying “I’ll start after …..” The truth is I could come up with all sorts of reasons to wait to start the Straight 60. For me it starts with pretty “good” reasons like a birthday celebration, which only comes once a year, but can quickly turn into “I don’t want to start now, its Friday.” If we are really honest with ourselves, there’s always going to be a reason (excuse) to not pursue your health, to not start omitting those damaging foods.

I decided not to write about this because I wasn’t ready to go forward with it. I did exactly what I’m talking about up there, I had an excuse, because I knew once I addressed this again here, I’d have to get committed again. Well, I am ready to get back at this. Its like what you’ll hear Dr. Eric say at the beginning of the 60 Day turnaround, you need to tell everyone you know, or at least some people to keep you accountable. The problem I had with trying to start back on this path was I wouldn’t tell anyone, so a cheat or completely giving in, was only known by me.

If you are newer to the office you probably are not aware that when I joined Healthsprout almost 2 years ago, I was more overweight than I am now. I did the Straight 60, and was very committed to it. Like I mentioned birthdays above, the first time through I skipped dessert on my own birthday, my 30th. That was commitment, and it was going great. I lost about 30 lbs. in those 60 days. I was doing a blog on our website, which I think helped keeping me accountable, which was me telling everyone I know.  I fell off the wagon hard and since then I’ve gained back some of the weight. I’m definitely better than where I was, but not where I want to be.

So I’m starting my journey again, today, Wednesday April 27. My goal is to lose weight, because I’ve been overweight too long, and there is no such thing as healthy overweight. I look forward to feeling good again, and having more energy. If you are like me and struggle with the excuses we make to put off our health. We need to stop lying to ourselves that its just one more meal, one more day and know that if we don’t stop now and commit to a change we’ll continue down this path which will steal life from us. I know its hard, especially when those “good excuses” come up like a birthday, we are not there to celebrate the food, its the people that  make it special.

I’ve mainly talked about food, because that’s whats hardest for me, but the excuses are there for other aspects as health as well. Not exercising, not dealing with stress, not getting adjusted, or not doing your home care. Don’t push it off any further.

We have a workshop coming up, 60 in 2, the main points from the 60 Day Turnaround condensed into 2 hours. If you haven’t done the 60 day, I strongly recommend it. Or if you just want to watch Dr. Eric try to not shoot over 2 hours, come check it out.

Feel free to keep me accountable and ask how I’m doing. One way you’ll know, is that I told my wife I wouldn’t shave my beard until I’m under 200 lbs. so if I shave that off you’ll know I’m doing well.

The Deadlift

Written by Dr. Mark

If you’ve been in the office this week you probably heard Dr. Eric telling the story of the deadlifts. A 1 rep max was programmed at the gyms we attend (different gyms but same programming). A deadlift is fairly simple as you can see from the diagram above, you simple bend and pull the weight up to waist level, keeping your arms extended. This week I lifted 495 lbs. A new personal record (PR) for me which matched Dr. Eric’s previous PR, until later that day he was able to lift 500 lbs. (I should mention that the bars we use aren’t designed to hold more than the 495 lbs. simply because there’s not enough room for more weight. As you can see in this picture he had to attach the extra 5 lbs. on top.)  eric deadlift

I had posted on Facebook later that day that I hit a new PR, and finally to the point, and a friend had commented “is that good for your back?”

Yes it is good for your back. Strengthening the back, glutes, hamstrings, and other muscle groups is one of the best defenses to back problems. We will often prescribe deadlifts and squats along with core strengthening exercises such as hollow rocks or holds and plank holds. This combination of exercises will build strength and stability through your low back, upper leg, and core.

When my friend asked about if this was good for my back, I’m assuming he was referring to the potential for injury. When lifting, as with any exercise, there is a potential for injury. This is why it is important to understand the exercise and how to perform it correctly. Having a knowledgeable coach is ideal, but you can do this on your own if you don’t have one.

If you are going to try this on your own, first you should find a good video going through the movement, and start with very light weight. In our gym whenever we learn something new we will always start with a PVC pipe. A broom stick would work well too.

The other exercise I mentioned, the squat, is another great one for building that strength and stability.  The great thing with this is you don’t need any equipment, just yourself.

Both of these are great, and should be incorporated into your workout routine on a regular basis.

Congrats to Dr. Eric… stay posted for an update when I pass him 😉

Get Powered Up For The Summer!

Getting powered up for the summer means so many things.  First off… it means preparing starting RIGHT now, for a great summer, but taking strides with your health.  And when we break down those strides, that is when we figure out what it really means to get on a determined health plan!

Diet – CUT the sugar.  It is way more fun to be part of the summer fun group, hitting the occasional cheat, but knowing you planned appropriately to keep yourself healthy.  Reducing inflammation, reducing toxicity, reducing anaerobic states in the body, and improving your insulin and leptin sensitivity, leading up to the cheat.  This means you better start right now!  The 60 Day Turnaround in 30 Days starts next Wednesday at CrossFit Silos if you are interested.  7:30pm, no cost to our Silos members, and only $15 for non-members for 4 weeks of teaching.    If not that, we have plans to be at Bread Bekkers in May on a Saturday for the 60 in 2.  2 Hours, all 60 days, JAMMED IN!

Next – pick up the greens.  You want to get lean, fill up on greens as much as you can, and watch your health take off, and your weight slip away.  When you cannot hit 13 servings a day, be sure to use Juice Plus as your supplement, not the antiquated science behind a multi-vitamin.  Why?  Because eating the whole food, is as good as it gets.

Exercise – I have said it before and I will say it again.  You CANNOT be healthy if you don’t exercise.  PERIOD.  There is no outsmarting exercise…. no way around the physical, chemical, hormonal benefits of exercising,  It just cannot be done.  So how in the world are you going to find another 60 minutes a day?  Well… DON’T.  Just spend 4 minutes doing 20 seconds of hard work, and 10 seconds of rest, for 8 fantastic sets of any exercise you can do.  Tabata is endless in opportunity, and bountiful in its value.

And of course, last, but not at all least.  The most import of all, your nervous system.  It is so amazing, how much is maintained at all moments by your brain… via your spinal cord.  And as you stress in life, you completely disrupt this most amazing process of function and healing.   ALL healing is controlled by the nervous system, all function.  So, if you neglect your spine, you will stay depleted, and all of your efforts above, will fall short of their potential to assist you in your health.  You first need a nervous system that is working in a fantastic way, before anything else will kick in and work with it.

Which is the entire reason why we are chiropractors, and the only reason we start with chiropractic.  It isn’t that it is everything, obviously there is a list above… but it is the primary thing.   Maintain that nervous system above all else, and you will achieve great results.  Chiropractic has repeatedly been shown to demonstrate higher levels of overall wellness in regular maintenance patients, than any other health based pursuit out there.  Get adjusted, and thus, BE POWERED UP FOR SUMMER!

Three Ways for Coffee Drinkers to Get Healthier NOW

Coffee drinkers… not like smokers.  No, not at all that bad, but if you are still doing these three things while drinking your coffee, you are hurting yourself and don’t have to! There have been studies lately that have suggested that drinking coffee can be healthy.  I agree, I think there is some value, so it is important to understand the things that you need to do, in order to maintain that healthy benefit!

deadlycreamer

STEP 1 – STOP using fake creamers, and move to the healthier options.  In the order suggested below, but first, why should you stop the fake stuff? Read the label, and don’t ask again.  🙂

creamer02

Sugar – understandable, did you ever taste this stuff?  Partially Hydrogenated Soybean or cottonseed oil – GMO sourced trans fat – totally unacceptable.  Trans fat kills you, period (review trans fat published research).  GMO?  Yes, soybeans and cottonseed are the two most commonly used GMO sourced oils in our diets.  And I can guarantee you, that these guys aren’t concerned with not using GMO.

STEP 2 – Begin using one of these options, based on taste and/or health.

  1. Kerrygold butter and coconut oil – use a combination of grass fed butter (ha, ha… no you don’t actually feed grass to the butter, just the cows), with coconut oil.  This method has been popularized by Dave Asprey on his Bulletproof website.  This site was once just a guys simple blog, that has now turned into a product selling mega-store.  Success deserved because of his focus on quality and sound leadership.  The method he describes involves frothing the butter and oil in order to get the right consistency.  His method online involves actually blending the coffee.
  2. Full Fat heavy cream that is organic.  The reason why we move into the full fat world, is that the fat is not only healthy, but by going full fat we are avoiding all sugar, and letting the value of the coffee be the value of the coffee.  Which is a question addressed below.
  3. Lastly, half and half… once again organic.  You need to get away from the toxins that are present in the milk of a conventionally raised cow.  rBST is the growth hormone implicated in negatively altering the growth patterns in children.  Antibiotics, known to increase risks of cancer as well as altering the bacteria in the gut, creating the “superbug” concern.  The half and half moves us a little into the world of sugar (lactose) thus not as good as the whole fat, no sugar heavy cream.

Make that simple change, and you will reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease (trans fat research) and most definitely diabetes.  I see these creams in the fridge at my church in the volunteer rooms, and all I think is “how can people be doing this to themselves”?  I realize that if these people understood the damage that this artificial food was doing to them, and if they could stop and think “Honor God with your body”, this is not the way God would have you treat the body that he has loaned you.  You are destroying His property.

So on that, what about coffee?  Well, there have been recent published articles that have suggested that a cup of coffee a day can reduce your risk of heart disease, some cancers, and more specifically diseases of the liver.  But what constitutes a cup a day?  For most literature, 12 oz of coffee is considered, but what we don’t see is the potential impact of decaf over caffeine.

I am a fan of never being addicted to caffeine, though I understand that in moments of life it can happen, and likely to know seriously ill effect.  But, I would go further to say that consuming typical, everyday, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Waffle House, or anything in between decaf is going to lead you down a path of further damage.  This is because the process of decaffeinating is a toxic process that will hurt you more than the caffeine in most cases.

STEP 3 – cut the toxins!  The best way to do this is to make the primary source of your coffee, a clean source.  Organic is the next step.  Buy Decaf as organic water processed decaf, or when consuming caffeine, be sure it is organic as often as possible.  Coffee, much like strawberries, or celery, is one of the foods that gets hammered by pesticides, both absorbing runoff into the plant material, as well as getting it heavily soaked into the bean.  These need to be purchased organic whenever possible.

If you are like me, and you really enjoy the flavor of a Starbucks coffee, then the best thing to do is to not drink their decaf, and don’t make it the place you get coffee from daily.  Until they offer a truly organic cup, you need to limit it.  I like to say out loud to myself, somewhere in the Starbucks buying process… “I am testing my liver”, which then reminds me to be cleaner in and around that purchase.  Limiting my options to eat something else throughout that day.  I figure one vice is acceptable to this body.

So, look for either the Swiss water process, or water process, or carbon dioxide process for decaf.  These will steer you away from the toxins of the typical decaf process in our culture.  Is it good?  Yeah, decaf is good… the flavor should be no different in a well processed coffee.  So mix it up, caffeine a couple days, decaf a couple days.

Thanks for caring about your health, now pass it on!

Be well and Be blessed! – Dr. E

The Failure of a Multi-Vitamin

“Count Colors, Not Calories”

It is a saying in the world of phytonutrients.  It matters more on what it looks like you are eating, than it does on how much you are eating.  These statements point directly at the world of hidden nutrients.  We have our vitamins and we have our minerals, which are important.  But without the phytonutrients that drive bio-process, the usefulness of these vitamins declines.

The government is driving the idea of five no starchy vegetables per day.  Yet research and anecdotal evidence have pointed towards the fact that you can get just as much value out of the 13th serving of vegetables as you can out of the first serving.  That diminishing returns typically happen at 14.

Dr. Gerson has driven home some incredible stories of healing from cancer, through the Gerson Clinics utilizing the Gerson therapy.  Dr. Gerson’s therapy involves consuming volumes of juiced nutrients every day, to the tune of 30 servings a day of nutrition.

I would like to point this out, you cannot SUBSTITUTE vitamins and minerals for WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION.  It cannot be done.

So the failure, the absolute failure of the average multivitamin, or pre-natal vitamin, is that it has NO phytonutrition.  The list below drives home this point, as we review this list of phytonutrients, drives home the color equation, but also drives home the value of these nutrients because of the significant impact they have on our health.

5_colour_phytonutrient

So then I guess one could ask, “Why don’t we make pills of the phytonutrients too then?”  Well we do.  Of course the manufacturers of the world want to cell you quercetin, or turmeric as you might know it.  Others might want to cell you just the Indole-3-Carbonyl from the cruciferous family.

It makes sense that these are available in individual capsules, as there are people who will need MORE of these in order to get themselves healthy.  BUT… their first step should be to increase their intake of these through eating, and then through supplementing a WHOLE FOOD supplement. Enter Juice Plus.

Smartest people on the planet.

Well, maybe not the smartest people, but pretty smart.   Some of the coolest foods on the planet, juiced, dehydrated, with carbohydrate removed as possible, equals everything you need without the stuff you don’t, without leaving out the stuff you might need and not realize.

Consider these phytonutrients.  What if the goal was to now make a multivitamin with the phytonutrients in?  How about the enzymes that naturally occur in food?  Now you are missing those.  Or what if you find a product that juices like Juice Plus but they manufacture at 300 degrees?  What happens to your enzymes now?  Destruction.

I enjoy helping people eat better.  But I rarely can get anybody eating 13 servings a day, so that is why we start with Juice Plus.  Through testing, and consultation, we figure out what the other needs are.  Instead of relying on the combined education of 50 different articles about 50 different supplements, resulting in the consumption of piles of nutrients that now interact negatively with your gut.  I have seen WAY too many of these types of patients.

Usually they are coming out of the care of a naturopath.  Sorry to the naturopaths of the world, but many of them do not use the lens of creation in their process.  Looking through the lens of “What was God’s plan”?  By the way, 13 servings is today.  I don’t think that was God’s plan, but God didn’t plan for a farm with no crop rotation, or no time to let a field “heal” and restore its nutrients.  There is a world of loss happening, we are trying to fight that, and the knowledge is power.

I recommend you stop the multivitamin, and start the Juice Plus – It just makes sense.
