Soy or Whey?

This article comes from Dr. Axe, and for my regulars, you know the answer already.  But for those newbies who have been around for only a short time, you might be wondering what the best choice is.  Well, the simple verdict is NO Soy!  We are Whey all the Way, and specifically, grass fed, non-denatured, four ingredient whey protein (ours doesn’t have the negatives that he comments about below).

There are reasons, and Dr. Axe talks about them.  But I wanted to touch on the GMO crop really quickly.  Monsanto has developed a seed that is Genetically Modified for SOY, which has become the seed of choice worldwide.  In a couple weeks, I will be in Upstate New York visiting my family (my annual reunion trip).  When I am there, my wife and I will spend two days in the Finger Lakes Region, which is pretty fantastic.

There are wineries everywhere in this region, and beautiful views, awesome glacier cut lakes (no man made dams).  So we’ll be driving my dad’s Miata around up there (beats the minivan) with the top down, enjoying the breathtaking views of Soy.  Yep.  Soy.  There are endless fields of soy, with little corporate names in front of these fields, all representing seed manufacturers who are owned by….. Monsanto.

Who is Monsanto?  The Evil one.  Now according to this image from a blog online, they own everybody, but according to The Examiner, the list is misleading.

No Monsanto

The Importance of Protein

The word Protein comes from a Greek word meaning first priority or of first importance.  The Greeks were highly concerned with their physical health and appearance and knew the vital importance of protein in the diet.  Protein is essential to rebuilding cells and tissues, keeping fluids in balance, protecting enzyme functions, supporting nerve and muscle contraction as well as supporting the health of skin, hair and nails!

As more people today are becoming aware of the importance of protein in the diet and concerned with their physique, protein supplementation is becoming more and more popular, even for non-athletes.

One of the most popular protein supplements today is whey. According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, whey protein is a great way to increase muscle strength. Recently I’ve written about the benefits of whey protein supplementation, but I want to take it a step further and compare the pro’s and con’s of two very popular protein supplements; whey and soy protein supplements. I’ll also share the protein source I personally use.  Let’s get started with whey protein.

Whey Protein 101

Whey proteins are globular proteins derived as a by product of cheese production.  It ‘s one of two types of proteins found in milk; whey and casein proteins. There are three types of whey protein. These are the following:

Concentrates – containing low level of fat and cholesterol, higher levels of bioactive compounds in the form of lactose.   This is the best and least processed form.

Isolates – the fat has been removed, lower in bio-activated compounds with a mild to milky taste and proteins can be denatured.

Hydro-isolates – with these the cost is higher, and they are less allergenic than the other forms of whey.  However, this is by far the most processed and proteins have been denatured.  I do not recommend this form of whey.

Whey protein is highly digestible and used in a number of common grocery store products.

Whey Protein is Found in:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Meal replacement products
  • Cheese

Benefits of Whey Protein

Whey protein is one of the most popular proteins used by athletes and bodybuilders alike for its muscle enhancing effects. It is theorized to help not only build muscle and enhance body composition but also to speed the recovery of broken down and stressed muscles (as occurs from exercise). This is attributed to the leucine found in whey protein.

In the study mentioned earlier by the British Journal of Nutrition, whey protein was found to contain “active components that are superior to amino acids for stimulating muscle protein synthesis and initiating translation.

But these aren’t the only benefits of whey protein. In addition, numerous recent studies point to added health benefits of whey. Some of these include the following:

  • Appetite suppression
  • Anti-oxidant properties to fight free radical damage
  • Preventing inherited allergies
  • Reduced risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes

Side Effects of Whey

As with most supplements, there are certain side effects from whey protein. Some of these side effects include gas, bloating, cramps, tiredness, fatigue, headaches and irritability.  Many of these side effects are blamed on the consumer of whey being lactose intolerant or from the added artificial sweeteners found in some whey protein powders. (Below I’ll explain what you MUST look for and what to avoid when buying a protein powder.)

There are a number of benefits to using a whey protein supplement and studies continue to mount supporting the above mentioned benefits of whey protein. Now let’s discuss soy protein supplementation.

Soy Protein 101

Soy protein is derived from the soybean that has been dehulled and defatted. These dehulled and defatted soybeans are then processed into three forms:

  1. Soy flour
  2. Soy concentrates
  3. Soy isolates

Soy protein has many uses and was not originally used as a food product but for paper coatings used as a pigment binder. Today, soy is used in many foods and other products as well.

Soy Protein is Found in:

  • Salad Dressings
  • Soups
  • Beverage Powders
  • Frozen Deserts
  • Infant Formulas
  • Breads
  • Breakfast Cereals
  • Pet Foods

For a time, there were a number of health claims about soy protein. Some of these claims stated that soy protein consumption helped lower bad cholesterol, prevented heart disease and even fought off some cancers. However, more recent studies have indicated that many of these health claims are not only false but that there are serious concerns with concentrated soy protein consumption.

Health Concerns with Soy Protein

These concerns have to do with the phytoestrogens found in soy proteins, especially the concentrated soy proteins. Phytoestrogens mimic estrogen. The concern with this is that many people today are becoming estrogen dominated and this can be potentially hazardous to our health. Much of this estrogen dominance has been attributed to plastics that contain a form of estrogen that when heated and undergo extreme temperatures leach into the foods and beverages held in the plastics. When we consume the foods we consume the plastics.  High levels of estrogen have been associated with increased risk of certain cancers in both men and women.

This is my concern with adding more estrogen to the diet and with using soy supplements.

The WHY behind CrossFit

I have been a chiropractor for 12 ish years.  I have been on the chiropractic lifestyle for 16 years, and I have been concerned with my health for that same number.  Honestly, at 24, I did not care about my health.  At 25 it all changed, because of chiropractic.

So, that being said, I have been in pursuit of greater health for that entire time.  Obviously I have messed up at times, I am not saying that.  But I have still pursued this concept of health as a general goal.  So what is health?  The five pillars that Maximized Living use as a method to achieve it make sense to me.

  1. Maximized Nerve Supply (spinal function)
  2. Maximized Mind (peace, rest, relaxation and comfort with life)
  3. Maximized Nutrition (this is all about getting the right stuff in)
  4. Minimized Toxins (this is all about keeping the wrong stuff out)
  5. and lastly, and our topic today Maximized Oxygen and Lean Muscle (exercise)

So why Oxygen?  Because deep breathing that is not forced, but is forced upon you, is the absolute best way to bring in more oxygen, into deeper darker places in your body, than through any other method.  A quick aside.  Have you heard that cancer dies in the presence of oxygen?  It is true.  Most cancers have no desire for oxygen, but prefer anaerobic and acidic environments.  If you are penetrating more tissue with oxygen, then you are at a reduced risk of cancer, period.

Ok, back on track.  Lean muscle, also an awesome predictor of health, according to studies published in the journal of aids and retrovirus, as well as the journal of sports medicine, it is the number one predictor of survival.  Above all measures, and another study in the journal of aids and retrovirus also said that phase angle (measured by the BIA that we do in our office for only $15), is the number one predictor of long term potential of aids patients (better than T-Killer Cells).  Phase angle has a direct correlation to muscle mass.

So my point, you need to be working out.  Stop making excuses, and start working out.  And do it seriously, hard, with intention and love.  Wait, what was that?  Love.  Love your workout?  What a ridiculous notion.  Well, it was to me for a number of years.  Actually, all the way up to the point where I became a personal trainer (this was during my second years in college, while I was working towards my Doctorate degree, as well as my Masters in Exercise Physiology at the same time).

I decided to use my knowledge, so I got a personal training certification, and went out and got some customers.  I realied how boring workouts were, so I began to “program” workouts that were timed intervals.  And all of this came before CrossFit.  But I was sport specific.  So for example, for myself, I would do these squat workouts where I would put a 135# barbell on my back, and do squats for 60 seconds at the fastest pace I could (usually I would do 20-25).  Then I would re-rack the barbell, wait two minutes, then do it again.  This was to mimic hockey periods.  Where I would work hard for 1 minute, then rest for two.

Made sense to me, but I failed to realize that I was almost on to something.  It wasn’t until 6 years later, when I found CrossFit, that I realized what the missing pieces were.  First, back to the love your workout thing.  I was enjoying the workouts that I was doing from 2000 until 2006.  They were pretty interesting, varied, and decently intense.  But when I found CrossFit, it all changed.  I became really interested in the WOD (workout of the day).  I found myself wondering what tomorrow’s WOD would be, checking the web site looking for a post.  Waiting for an inkling of what torture I would put my self through the next day.

But that is just it, there are hundreds of thousands of people out there now, who are dying to put themselves through the same.  I call it torture, but it is elation.  Why?

Eric2

Because for the first time in most people’s existence, they have a workout, that tortures their bodies, but pleases their minds… they actually love it.

What would you give, to have a situation where you are dying to get out of work to go work out.  VS the usual, “I am so beat after work, how could I ever go work out?”  For seven and a half years, I have found the most amazing thing, a desire to be fit, for the simple reason, of the desire to go do the workout.  Other desires come to fruition… be healthier, have less cancer risk, have greater growth hormone levels, thus better healing. Increase serum levels of thiol, thus reduce aging (this also happens just from being adjusted), and increase serotonin, and sensitivity to leptin, driving body weight down, and fun things like libido up.

We just opened up CrossFit Bridgemill.  And many of you have already jumped in to enjoy the two free weeks we are giving there.  Which is great, I am sure you will love it.  But for many of you, that is a ridiculous hike.  But you need to try CrossFit, simple.  If you aren’t in the Bridgemill area, then go to our other gyms.  CrossFit Towne Lake, The Garage.  I will give anyone who wants it (in the next two weeks) a free week at either of those gyms, to work out as often as you want, and to feel the love.

CrossFit is expensive compared to other gyms, but to call it expensive is ridiculous.  Caviar as a source of nourishment is expensive.  CrossFit is actually economical.  Why?  Reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer and diabetes, the whole time loving life and being able to do more, be more confident, and be more confident in your clothes.  Uhhhh, hmmmm… what is that worth?  Everyone who tries and sticks at this, gets results.

But look at the difference in the model.  A CrossFit gym costs $150 a month or more, but the reason is simple.  Anytime fitness, around the corner from my new gym, has a goal of as many members as possible.  They are hoping for that, but then praying that they never show up at the same time.  Why?  Because there is no way they could accommodate all of their members in one day.  So they keep selling, and selling, and they don’t care if people are coming or not.

A CrossFit gym is banking on you coming.  They want you to come, because they want you to get results.  Our model at Bridgemill is that we will close the doors to any newcomers once we hit 220 members.  Period.  You just say “that’s it, we’re full, sorry”.  Because we will have our hands full managing and giving our effort to 220 people.

One thing I have said to people about the cost.  I have never had anyone leave our gym saying, “it isn’t worth it”.  But i have had people leave saying “I couldn’t find it in my budget”.  Well, your budget stinks then.  Seriously.  Somehow quantify your cable tv over this?  Or a phone?  An iPhone?  Really?  More important?  Your 5 maximized living essentials should all come before the car, the phone, the tv, the vacation, and the clothes.

If you cannot understand why your health is worth that much, then you will surely lose your health prematurely.

Gardasil – Useless?

Perhaps you saw this link on my Facebook Page.  If not, please take a look, this is part of the ongoing evidence that our country has a messed up medical system, that allows profiteering in the name of health, based on lies, and ripe with risk.  Read on to see Ms. Cain’s article.  Notice the date, this isn’t new news, it is simply shocking, and ongoing, and so often overlooked – Dr. E

The Liberty Beacon

By: Sarah Cain

Dr. Diane Harper was the lead researcher in the development of the human papilloma virus vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix.  She is the latest to come forward and question the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines.  She made the surprising announcement at the 4th International Public Conference on Vaccination, which took place in Reston, Virginia on Oct. 2nd through 4th, 2009.  Her speech was supposed to promote the Gardasil and Cervarix vaccines, but she instead turned on her corporate bosses in a very public way.  When questioned about the presentation, audience members remarked that they came away feeling that the vaccines should not be used.

“I came away from the talk with the perception that the risk of adverse side effects is so much greater than the risk of cervical cancer, I couldn’t help but question why we need the vaccine at all.”

– Joan Robinson

Dr. Harper explained in her presentation that the cervical cancer risk in the U.S. is already extremely low, and that vaccinations are unlikely to have any effect upon the rate of cervical cancer in the United States.  In fact, 70% of all H.P.V. infections resolve themselves without treatment in a year, and the number rises to well over 90% in two years.  Harper also mentioned the safety angle.  All trials of the vaccines were done on children aged 15 and above, despite them currently being marketed for 9-year-olds.

So far, 15,037 girls have reported adverse side effects from Gardasil alone to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (V.A.E.R.S.), and this number only reflects parents who underwent the hurdles required for reporting adverse reactions.  At the time of writing, 44 girls are officially known to have died from these vaccines.  The reported side effects include Guillian Barré Syndrome (paralysis lasting for years, or permanently — sometimes eventually causing suffocation), lupus, seizures, blood clots, and brain inflammation.  Parents are usually not made aware of these risks.

Dr. Harper, the vaccine developer, claimed that she was speaking out, so that she might finally be able to sleep at night.

“About eight in every ten women who have been sexually active will have H.P.V. at some stage of their life.  Normally there are no symptoms, and in 98 per cent of cases it clears itself.  But in those cases where it doesn’t, and isn’t treated, it can lead to pre-cancerous cells which may develop into cervical cancer.”

– Dr. Diane Harper

One must understand how the establishment’s word games are played to truly understand the meaning of the above quote, and one needs to understand its unique version of “science”.  When they report that untreated cases “can” lead to something that “may” lead to cervical cancer, it really means that the relationship is merely a hypothetical conjecture that is profitable if people actually believe it.  In other words, there is no demonstrated relationship between the condition being vaccinated for and the rare cancers that the vaccine might prevent, but it is marketed to do that nonetheless.  In fact, there is no actual evidence that the vaccine can prevent any cancer.

From the manufacturers own admissions, the vaccine only works on 4 strains out of 40 for a specific venereal disease that dies on its own in a relatively short period, so the chance of it actually helping an individual is about about the same as the chance of him being struck by a meteorite.  Why do nine-year-old girls need vaccinations for extremely rare and symptom-less venereal diseases that the immune system usually kills anyway?

That awful real life thing strikes again.

Sometimes its easy to live a life of health.  Sometimes it is really hard.  You never know which one will be the reality.  I have some patients who have shared failure after failure with me.  What kind of failures?  All of them.

It might be diet, it might be exercise, staying committed to chiropractic or sleep.  What is it for you? One, all?  Well, it is good to hear my folly once and awhile, as I think it is good for me to see the falter of the disciples, or to hear my pastor share his difficulties.  The point is to see that masters, experts, or those otherwise deeply entwined in their teaching, will also falter.

I just came off of six weeks of the advanced plan (aka – the healing diet), finishing with a pseudo suero cleanse where I ate a blended meal a day (trying to maintain protein levels right now for shoulder healing).  I did a good job of being committed.  But then, the wellness retreat.  The whole idea, is to teach wellness, and not to guilt these people into life change while there, but to give them the tools to plan a time to attack at least 40 days of this diet, if not 80 or 100.

Enter, the dining room of the High Hampton Inn.  First off, I have been full on healing deit at this retreat in the past.  My wife did it without error in October of last year on her way to 4 ½ months of this.  So it is possible.  But hard.  The reason, they give amazing options at every single meal.  It wasn’t difficult to avoid pancakes, and waffles, and fresh baked biscuits scones and the like.  I had no problem avoiding breaded meats at lunch or dinner.  But the options for dessert.  I really enjoyed trying the desserts.

Now, if you have heard me talk, you should know that I do enjoy the dessert.  When I am in core plan, which is now, the dessert is where I prefer to add my sugar calories. Where you might prefer breads or pastas, or crackers, or cereals, or oatmeal, or whatever.  I prefer to gain my sugar through dessert.  Which isn’t a problem, as I am on the core plan.

But it became a problem when I had two, then one for lunch, and one for dinner, and a cookie later.  My point, is that the simple rule which I always use, failed me.  Two extra sugars in a day, outside of the high glycemic fruit (which I will allow two per day as well.  Well, I was hitting six and seven easily (mostly because I was eating grapefruit at breakfast with strawberries and blueberries).  Meaning, the total glycemic load was too high.

So, my parting paragraph to you.  ONE – you should really plan to join me in October, and we’ll all hold a better line of what we eat together.  This place is an absolutely amazing place, and all will fall in love with it.  Period.  TWO – expect to fail, but expect to succeed as well.  Now that this failure has taken place, I am going to be pretty darn perfect for the next week with my diet.  Exercise increases for me naturally when I eat like this, you should think the same way.  Fall in love with your exercise routine (if you haven’t tried CrossFit yet, now is your time, too many people fall in love with it, for you not to try it).

And THREE – If you find you are always failing at your goals, then the problem is you.  You need to make a decision that your commitments will be greater than your feelings.  Done.  I love and adore all of you who make effort towards commitment each week.  It is a great thing to be working on the project of self.  Be well and be strong! – Dr. E

Ask us first

Simple way to protect yourself in all medical decisions.  Get our opinion first.  Why?  Because when you first get the opinion of someone who stands in opposition to medicinal approaches, you will at the very least be conditioned to better test the theory placed in front of you by the medical model.

Remember, we are not “Against Medicine”, we are against the model by which it is disseminated.  In order to combat the constant barrage of “take a pill, its easy, its effective, just do it”; you will need to arm yourself with the truth of its impact.  When you sit in front of the TV, laughing at the voice over reading a list of side effects, you are strong.  When you are sitting in front of the doctor being told that you or your child is in need of a medication, you are weak.

They might be right, but have you ever treated yourself or a child when you later realized you probably didn’t need to?  That one medication wasn’t the end of their life, but if you are avoiding certain foods, certain chemicals, do you not realize that a medication is worse than all of those?  Sure it might have a positive impact on a symptom, but it doesn’t heal.  Don’t fall for that.  You heal, your body is self healing and you should be thankful for it.  Stick with that truth, and you’ll be amazed.

My daughters are crazy healthy, and a big part of it is because they aren’t chemically doped.  They wanted a “dum dum” blowpop thingy (i don’t know what to call it) at the bank today, because it was offered.  I said no, would you like to consume something loaded with chemicals?  Artificial flavors, preservatives, sulfuric acid laden high fructose corn syrup?  They both said “no”.  Then we went home and I offered them an organic lollipop.  But both still refused, strengthened by their own resolve at the bank to now avoid the sugar.  5 yrs and 8 yrs old, living a life free of medications.  Brooke still hasn’t ever had anything.

I think of the time that I held Ansley in my arms at 3AM, watching her fight for each breath, thinking, “God, I know that I am right because you have filled me with peace, so please let this pass quickly so Laura can be at peace as well”.  Shortly after her temp dropped from 104, and her breathing normalized.  The next day she was fine.  I had adjusted her three times in the night, and stayed awake for most of the night.  I did it because I wanted to be sure.

Most of you would have ran to the hospital.  Thinking that the breathing was definitely a major problem.  A hospital staff member would have thought breathing treatments were necessary.  Had you not listened to them, you could have ended up like this couple, without a kid (click the link).  Because the state would love to take your child away for not following the hospitals treatment plan.

The Fan

All of this stuff can be improved upon by asking us first.  I have a _____, what should I do?  My child has been diagnosed with strep, what would you do? My ____ has a ______ and I am unsure who to talk to.  All of these questions can save you and your family much heartache.  Ask us first.  If we don’t have an answer, we’ll find one.  We like to research.

In parting, i wanted to leave you with some of the negative reports that we have read over the years about different medications.  And let you decide.

Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen – taken daily for two years, patients were found to have an increased risk of heart disease due to loss of elasticity in the arterial wall, hardening, and generalized increase in blood pressure.  Reason – increased permeability of the vascular wall due to blood thinning caused arterial hardening.

Aspirin – daily use was shown to increase the risk of stroke, also having a negative effect on arterial walls, especially in the arteries of the head and neck.

Antibiotics – shown to have a cumulative effect of increasing cancer risk in both the NEJM and JAMA.  Weakening of overall immune function increased risk of breast cancer as well as other more deadly cancers with greater time of use.  170 total days of dosage in a lifetime doubled breast cancer risk in women.

Diuretics – by pushing inflammation out of the extra cellular space, these pills have been shown to create toxicity, and have a generalized increased cancer risk.

Steroids – among other things, will compromise tissue permeability, so that dependence on the chemical to maintain normal (culturally normal) levels of swelling becomes present, thuis without the drug, a near disease state exists.

Antacids – increased risk of liver cancer.  Including baby zantac.

These are some of the basic ones.  But I would be remiss to leave statin drugs alone.  All of you who are taking cholesterol lowering meds thinking you are saving your lives.  You are actually killing yourselves.  To inhibit the production of Co-Q-10 is ridiculous.  But the worst part of it, is how insane the idea is that cholesterol lowering meds would decrease heart disease, when the drugs have been around since 1987, in the form of Mevacor, and yet heart disease has never dropped, never been reduced, and even in tightly watched populations.

Lipitor is the only one who was able to manipulate their study just right to utilize the smallest sample selection to show a correlation between lipitor, and a minor reduction in heart disease risk. One out of thousands of studies? (they might have more than one now, but it hasn’t been anywhere near as many dissenting studies)

Get off the med train.  You’ll be happier without.  But remember, we are not medical doctors, and we are not allowed by law to give medical advice.  If you want off these things, you need to talk to your MD.  But if you want to avoid getting on them, you need to talk to us.

Be well and Blessed! – Dr. E

Oh – and if you are looking for a like minded MD… ask us!
