4th of July is over… or…

John Adams’ famous letter to his wife Elizabeth.  I searched to find the exact letter, without misrepresentation, and this is the original.  I find this letter to be of incredible value to my spirit, and to my home.  I hope you do as well, as I break it down for you.  At least the way I would break it down.

The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not. (The Book of Abigail and John: Selected Letters of the Adams Family, 1762-1784, Harvard University Press, 1975, 142).

I know not why I chose to stay an extra day on this trip (it is Monday morning, and I am here in Lockport NY still, not on my way home, not in the office, but here, preparing to travel.  I made this decision weeks before I left.  But I feel as though I was prompted by God.

My older brother was baptized yesterday, and by staying here I was present to see his baptism (it was supposed to happen last week, but there was a flood here as I arrived, and the baptismal was filling with sewage back-flow, thus the postponement, and the value to my extra time here).  In addition, I was here for a birthday celebration of my eldest nephew, Eli.  Which was another celebration of pomp and games and perhaps shews (shows according to literary translations of his letter).

I find myself overjoyed with the growth that took place with my children this past week.  It is always difficult living in an environment with 11 people under one roof, and the child dynamic grows their social skills significantly.  Couple that with a celebration of a nation, and my eldest daughter witnessing the baptism of her uncle, and me arranging for my younger brother (completing chiropractic school in December) to come and work with HealthSprout in just under a year… the time away was very valuable.

BUT – among all these things, I hear the words from Adams’ letter “It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty”; is there anything more valuable to any of us than a day of deliverance?  And is there question of whether or not the greatest way to achieve that deliverance is through solemn acts of devotion to God?

As I shared my week with you above, I ask you to consider your place right now.  I write about such things because it is my duty to guard your health as well as I can, and to do so requires that we reach deep into your hearts to find a place of peace.  Consider the blessing that has been bestowed on this nation in the past, and the ones that you are recipient of today.  Would it not be worth it to secure further blessing through acts of devotion?

I hope these words greet you well on this Monday morning.  Be well, and Be blessed! – Dr. E

Health Expression in the form of DOING

As I watched my father hop on his bike a few minutes ago, tennis racket strapped to his back, it made me think of the value of being able to do life.  He is 70 years old, and he is healthy.  He has few signs or symptoms of anything.  Takes one diuretic now for blood pressure (he has mildly increased BP, which I would tell him not to treat still), but he is otherwise without concern.

So as I was saying, he climbed on his bike to go play tennis (he invited me, but sadly, at 41, I have too many current injuries to go attempt that… sad, though I will heal); it made me think of those who are less than 70 who cannot do these things.

And thus it led me to think of you, my patients, those who are following my advice or guidance, who are younger than him, or myself, who are already heading towards a path of not being able to do.  And I want to speak to YOU this morning.  It is your opportunity that will slip away faster than you would think possible.  Before you know it, you’ll be beyond that point where you can force yourself down the path of wellness.  The path of being able to do all that you want.  Once your balance goes, it is hard to get it back, once your shoulders become too inflexible and frozen, it is hard to get it back.  Once the strength is sapped from your body from too much sitting, it is hard to get it back.

The two most paramount steps to lifelong function.  Chiropractic care, to insure mobility of joint, and function of nerve.  Exercise.

I talk about diet a lot, but you cannot out perform your sedentary life with a perfect diet.  Just like you cannot “out exercise” the poor dietary choices that come with culture.

Your time for life and health is now, it is always harder to catch up.  Be well, be blessed, looking forward to celebrating the 4th of July.  – Dr. E

I Am a MAN on FIRE

This Daily Sprout was posted back in 2010.  But I wanted to toss it back out there for you because it is an important message.  For me.  Lately, I have been battered a but by the effort of life, feeling the weight of many things.  And the place that I often go, to remove me from the feeling of stress, is here.  To the place of knowing that there is a purpose and mission that I have been designed for, and that the more I get pulled away, the more I need to pull back in.  I hope this helps you find a bit of that place in your own life.  Be well and blessed!

I am on a mission, it is why God put me here, and it is the thing that burns inside of me. The mission is to pull people from a burning building, and to carry them to safety.  The biggest problem with my mission, is that most people do not have any idea that they are in the burning building.

YOU are in the building.  If you subscribe to any of what culture has to offer you in the way of diet, exercise, health PHILOSOPHY, spirituality… then you are there.  I could rant and rave for days on each of these topics individually, but it would get boring along the way. But if you will simply trust the basis of this argument, then you will be pulled from the building, and will have amazing life change because of it!

Scratching the surface: Diet – Low Fat is still “in”, according to culture.  Does anyone out there believe that the “Low Fat” idea hasn’t been around long enough to have an impact?  How about “Diet” drinks and foods that are low sugar (high artificial sugar)?  The answer doesn’t lie in the low fat low sugar food, it lies in the lifestyle decisions for every food that you eat.

Exercise… do we really believe that another exercise video is the answer to our problems?  That we somehow are in need of one more infomercial piece of equipment?  Duh!  It is the decision that fails us, we fail to decide to be different, from this point forward.  We get back to the gym, then we are done, then back, then done, then back, then done… see-saw, see-saw, forever.  Lifestyle.

In the end, it really comes down to health philosophy, and the way you look at those decisions and how they impact your life.  Cultural phiolosophy says that you can make it through your life without making wise decisions, that there is SO MUCH technology in our healthcare, that we can SAVE you from your bad decisions with a pill and/or a surgery.  This is such a flawed opinion, and is so far from reality, that it is almost easier to believe the lie, than to do something about it.  Just consider the deaths in our country, 2/3 are lifestyle disease that are highly preventable… yet this cultural representation that the medical profession can save us with a chemical, IS NOT SAVING THEM!!!

Chiropractic is an answer in itself, adjusting the spine to allow for the best possible flow of information from your brain to your body, and to maintain that flow for your lifetime, with no other wise decision, will eliminate a HIGH percentage of risk.  Add other positive lifestyle decisions and you will live a life free from so many afflictions and ailments.

So here it is.  I am on a mission, I put a lot of time into making sure that I can lead you the way you need to be led, and in the direction that will allow you the best possible life.  So, SHOW UP.  That is it, just make it to our office, read my blog DrEricRichards.com (I killed this blog in 2012 so stick with this one) read our Daily Sprout’s on the web site healthsprout.com, and make it to our workshops.  That is all you need to do.  The rest will come naturally.

If you are willing to take the steps to follow, then the lifestyle choices will become easier and easier.  That is all there is to it!  Do IT!  I want to see everyone in the upcoming events, and you should make every step you can to make it.  There is no easier time, life NEVER gets easier.  I am ready to act, follow me, let’s act together and change the community!!  Health for everyone!!

God Bless!!!!!!

Workout of The Week

Today, we will not only post a workout of the week for you, but we’ll also talk a bit about lactate threshold.  So first off, why do you care about fitness?  Because it is a measure of health.  It reduces your risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more.  It gives you function, climbing stairs is nothing, carrying kids up mountains is nothing, you simply do more.  Period.

So lets get after it!  Not to mention the value of greater bone density, greater growth hormone, more sensitive leptin receptors, etc, etc.  Ok, Ok, I am moving on.  So this thing about lactic acid, what is it?   First off, if you have ever had someone tell you when you are sore, that it is all the lactic acid buildup in your cells, you can forgive them, they are wrong.  Yep, sorry, wrong.  But it’s ok, and you wil have a better appreciation for the truth when you read this.

E_Row
Rowing (being done today at CrossFit Bridgemill) is an awesome way to improve lactate threshold.

Lactic acid builds up when you are working anaerobically, or beyond the ability of your body to deliver enough oxygen to tissues to fuel them, while removing lactate and carbon dioxide.  Oxygen at high levels, provides oxidation of lactate, back to pyruvate.  When the effort is anaerobic, then movement of the lactate back to the liver to be converted is necessary.  So, what I am saying, is that the pain from exercise that comes from lactate, is actually the pain that happens DURING exercise, not after.  Afterwards, you have DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), which is linked moreso to the increase in histamines, prostaglandins, etc.  These are the mechanisms of inflammation (if you haven’t had a chance to see my inflammation talk, and subsequent recommendation of Juice Plus, you should take that step).

So what is lactate threshold?  The level at which you can no longer remove lactic acid at a rate fast enough, thus you are now moving towards complete muscular failure from exercise. When I say complete, I mean complete enough that exercise has to stop.  The value of reaching this point is incredible, and again, this is why I promote high intensity.  For example, sprint as hard as you possibly can, and plan on doing it for 100M.  But then continue to 200M, and then right as you expect to stop you have a strong desire to go on, so you hit 400M.  Now if this was done as prescribed, with no idea that the final distance was going to be 400M.  One important thing will happen, which is that you will have run this distance as hard as you possibly could.

And you would have the taste of lactate threshold.  As your legs became heavier and heavier, and you became worse and worse off.  Dragging your legs along, hoping to keep picking your feet up, you are getting closer and closer to having nothing left.  As you operate within this area, you push your VO2 Max, significantly.  VO2 – the volume of oxygen that you can use, typically measured as a ml/kg/min of the oxygen compared to the weight of the person, per minute.  The highest scores ever recorded are road cyclists and cross country skiers.  What we know now though, is that you can take an average person, and put them into high intensity, and jump their scores up dramatically with short duration work.

So here is the short duration work for you!

5 minutes – As many times through this as possible

5 Burpees,  5 Push-ups, 5 sit-ups, 15 squats

So how do you do this stuff?  Well, the resource at The Garage will help you find the descriptions of the movements.  But the quick definitions are this:

Burpee – from standing to completely lying on the floor, back to standing with a jump and a clap of your hands over your head.

Push-up – from toes, or from knees.  Full range is to go from chest on the ground, to completely extended arms (no bend).

Sit-ups – from shoulders on the ground, to completely perpendicular to the ground.

Squats – push your bottom back, as you sink your hips low, keeping weight on the heels, stand back up completely before moving on to the next rep.

Real simple – do this for five minute in sequence as fast as you can.  You should be able to get at least 3 times through, and maybe even 5-6 for some of you.  It will be intense, you will experience lactic acid threshold, and your lungs will be on fire.  If not, you didn’t push hard enough.

Be well!  – Dr. E
