Summer is over, time to get serious…

I was thinking last night that i wanted to find a Daily Sprout that helped to inspire as we come to the end of the summer (school calendar summer) and move into the start of structure, and scheduled life.  It is a time to push into the potential of your life, to make the most of the minutes of the day, and to work towards something big as you finish out your year.  I hope these words from December of 2011 have an impact on you today!

New Year=New You

Posted on 12/28/11 in Daily SproutNo Comments

So here I am, writing my now annual tradition article on how the New Year is really a time of renewal.  I have been writing and telling this story for years, because there is an opportunity at the new year, to do more, better, faster, than any other time of year.  It really is a time of renewal.

For me, as I look at the coming year, I like to take stock of the prior year (usually done without too much rehearsal on my part, just glancing back); then consider what I would like to do differently for the upcoming year.  Looking forward needs to be more intentional than looking back (though for many of you with career goals, it might make sense to spend equal time assessing last year as you will spend planning this one).

If your goals are health oriented, consider why you may have failed at those goals previously, but spend the bulk of your effort figuring out how to plan appropriately for this upcoming year.  Let me throw out some memory jogging ideas for you to get you started.

  • You have been to the gym less than 50% of what you said you would do; you hate working out and need something fun; you cannot control your diet for more than four weeks; you fall off your diets aggressively without maintaining any control; you find yourself doing your diet about 80% of the time (success) but then you will go completely crazy for a month at a time, destroying all semblance of control; you understand that healing comes from a healthy spine and nervous system yet you don’t do your traction, you don’t get your scheduled adjustments and you don’t pay attention to your posture.

The above sounds like an absolute recipe for disaster, and it also sounds like most of our culture.  So let’s not dwell on the bad, but let’s consider the good.  First off, God surely gives us something internal that clicks on at the start of a new year. Have you ever been on a good team?  I am thinking of sports, but it could be something else… but think, GOOD.  And this good team suffers a loss, not because the other team or the circumstances were better or greater than your team… but because your team acted uncommitted.  Think about how this good team came back in the next game, or next opportunity.  If it was good, then you won, or you achieved success.

New Years Resolutions

Every one of us has that same turn-around button.  That ability to draw fuel from our failures, and to rise from them.  We just sometimes forget to initiate the process.  Whether it be that we have grown weary from our challenges, or we have been distracted by life’s simple pleasures (that don’t really reward); all we need to do, is re-focus, and in this case, use the New Year.  I have realized from the effort of leading people into this place of growth, that in order to effectively take these steps we really need to first identify the importance, then secondly understand the plan.

If you hadn’t read my short Sprout from before Christmas, take a moment to read it and think about first making sure you don’t hold yourself to goals that will burn you out, or ones that if you fall behind, will make you abandon all efforts.  Those will not yield long term success for most.  I would also recommend you be specific in your goals, and put them in a place where you can re-visit them daily.

I hope that I don’t really need to go through reasons why your health is important.  That would seem like I have been talking to the walls, however a quick refresher cannot hurt.  Everyone is dying, we get that.  Your mortality is not in question, this earthly life will be over before you know it.  There are however things that can be done to enjoy it longer, and more completely while you are here.  Cancer and heart disease kill almost 5/6 of our population, and I believe that most of you would agree that neither are the preferred disease of choice.  I have seen many people whom I have cared greatly for, die from the two, please don’t be in that stat.

For the rest of your life, well, again… this is it.  If you want the most out of your earthly life, then you had better put some effort into it.  And I appreciate author Randy Alcorn saying that “this life is just practice for the next life” in his book,Heaven.  I can get into that, and it is a good reminder of why it is so important to work hard at this life.

My conclusion to this discussion is to be rooted in the new beginning.  You can start over, not because going to sleep one night and waking up the next morning is magical.  But because making a decision to change at any given moment is magical.  And it just so happens that we are programmed to be able to do it better when the year changes over to the next.  I’ll write more about some of the things that I am going to accomplish in 2012 in a future Daily Sprout, and perhaps you can email me your goals and I could write about some of them as well.

For now, know that whatever the goal.  We’ll be working to help you starting on Monday night January 23rd at 7PM in our next 40 day makeover.  Be well and be blessed!!

The CrossFit Games

Hey – a little on healthy living here.  Starting with functional fitness.  I think it is so cool that we get to see 60+ year old women running around a track and performing overhead squats with 45#.  This is cool stuff, and it is The CrossFit Games, happening this week and weekend in California.

Yep, 60+ means what you think, click the image below to watch a video of this performance.  The first of many WOD’s (Workout of The Day) that will be done by these women.  This week is loaded with events at Games.CrossFit.Com from Masters competitors, to the OPEN division (all ages), and Teams from CrossFit Affiliates around the country.

My old coach at CF Silos is there (Travis Mayer) as well as my current coach from CF Bridgemill (Jessica Denney Phillips).  It is a big week for CrossFitters around the country, but the reality is that with the explosive growth of CrossFit, most athletes (the name we give any member of our gyms), don’t even know what is really going on with the Games.

For me, as a part of The Garage Games, the largest competition series in CrossFit by total events; I care a lot about the happenings in California this week.  It all means a lot to me.  But how about you?  I know many of you have seen the ESPN2 produced episodes of the CF Games.  But what I want for you, is the dream that you could be there.

CF Games

Will you make it to the OPEN Division?  Maybe.  The 40-44 year old masters… perhaps.  But you don’t know until you begin to try.  And why is it worth trying?  Because full function is something that you all deserve.  Forever.

So consider the 60+ year old women running around this track.  Do you think they would ever not be able to navigate a set of stairs in the next 20 years?  Or shower themselves?  Or have confidence in their balance and ability to move through uneven terrain whether it be an old cobblestone street, or a dirt trail heading up a mountain?  The ability to enjoy your life will be directly impacted by your ability to do life.

Ask my patient who is taking tennis lessons after years off.  At 80 years old.  She will tell you how important it is to have function, and I will tell you how important her chiropractic and fitness is to her.

I hope you don’t close off because the example I have put in front of you might seem so out of reach, but if you reach for the stars and miss.  Falling short is pretty good still.

Acrylamide

Dr. Mercola has a fantastic new article on Acrylamide.  This toxic substance is one that you hear about from time to time in the health news world.  Look out for browned veggies, burnt toast, etc.  But rarely do you see it put together as well as this article.

The point of reading it is this.

“Everything causes cancer”

– this statement will take anyone who is set in their ways, and wants to enjoy life because they deserve it, and it will give them cancer.  Colon, bladder, breast, lung, prostate… it isn’t specific to just the colon.  It can effect all tissues because the compound will travel in the bloodstream.  So when my wife read this article to me on the way home from Big Canoe today, I said “email it, we need to pass it along ASAP”.  Because the flipside to “everything causes cancer”

– so you need to hurry up and pursue all the things that help you fight it.  Immune system function from the brain down (meaning brain stem, atlas, C2 vertebra).  Reduced carcinogenic intake, and molecules that support healthy immune system such as 13 servings of veggies a day, or juice plus if you cannot keep pace with that.  It is all really serious.

Approximately 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food is spent on processed foods, and food marketers do a masterful job at making it seem like fast foods and junk foods are the obvious choice.

Some even manage to make you believe such foods are a healthy option. But not only are these processed foods “dead” and devoid of any natural nutrition, they can also be loaded with potentially carcinogenic substances.

Just over a decade ago, researchers discovered that a cancer-causing and potentially neurotoxic chemical called acrylamide is created when carbohydrate-rich foods are cooked at high temperatures, whether baked, fried, roasted, grilled or toasted.

The chemical is formed from a reaction between sugars and an amino acid (asparagine) during high-temperature cooking. The answer, of course, is to limit or eliminate processed foods and increase the amount of whole, raw foods in your diet. I typically aim for 80-85 percent raw food in my own diet.

Acrylamide May Be a Primary Hazard of Processed Food

Acrylamide can form in many foods cooked or processed at temperatures above 212°F (100°C), but carbohydrate-rich foods are the most vulnerable to this heat-induced byproduct. As a general rule, the chemical is formed when food is heated enough to produce a fairly dry and “browned” surface. Hence, it can be found in:

  • Potatoes: chips, French fries and other roasted or fried potato foods
  • Grains: bread crust, toast, crisp bread, roasted breakfast cereals and various processed snacks
  • Coffee; roasted coffee beans and ground coffee powder. Surprisingly, coffee substitutes based on chicory actually contains 2-3 times moreacrylamide than real coffee

Acrylamide is not the only hazard associated with heat-processed foods, however. The three-year long EU project known as Heat-Generated Food Toxicants1 (HEATOX), identified more than 800 heat-induced compounds in food, 52 of which are potential carcinogens… For example, the high heat of grilling reacts with proteins in red meat, poultry, and fish, creating heterocyclic amines, which have also been linked to cancer.

Humans are not the only victims here. As discussed by holistic veterinarian Dr. Barbara Royal, pet foods also contain acrylamide and heterocyclic amines, courtesy of commercial pet food processing methods.

Exposure to Acrylamide Increases Your Cancer Risk

Animal studies have shown that exposure to acrylamide increases the risk of several types of cancer, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers acrylamide a “probable human carcinogen.” According to a 1988 study2:

“The data show that acrylamide is capable of inducing genotoxic, carcinogenic, developmental, and reproductive effects in tested organisms. Thus, acrylamide may pose more than a neurotoxic health hazard to exposed humans.

Acrylamide is a small organic molecule with very high water solubility. These properties probably facilitate its rapid absorption and distribution throughout the body. After absorption, acrylamide is rapidly metabolized, primarily by glutathione conjugation, and the majority of applied material is excreted within 24 hours… Acrylamide can bind to DNA… which has implications for its genotoxic and carcinogenic potential.”

Workout of The Week

Dr. Samara came in as an intern.  We got her working hard on building her skills, then we got her working hard on building her strength and athletic skills (she has an athletic background as a swimmer).  Here she is demonstrating strength and balance, all fun stuff that comes from CrossFit.

So here today, we want to add to the repertoire of weekly workouts for you.  And once again, these are designed so that anyone can do them.  Why?  Because as Greg Glassman has said, the fitness needs of our elite fighters and our grandmothers differ in degree, not in kind.

Meaning, a good workout is one that can be done by everyone at their own relative intensity.

Samara

Dr. Samara

So earlier this week we did a workout at CrossFit Silos that was perfect for all of you.  And we did a similar one at CrossFit Bridgemill that I will talk about as well.  But first, the workout of the week for you!

10 – 100M Sprints

Simple.  Running is the most important skill you could have in athletics.  Speed and power.  Fast is everything in sport, and in response to an emergency, and reaction to a threat of any type.  It is the key!  So consider making your way onto a track, finding the 100M mark, and blasting through 10 of them.  Your rest is the walk back to the starting line (about 2 minutes).  20 Minutes later, your legs will be killing you, your shoulders will be tight, your arms will be full of blood and pumped, and you’ll look and feel like you did a full body workout (because you did)!

You have heard me say that you need to work on balanced activities that are not one sided – golf and tennis are one sided, and should always be “PART” of your full physical fitness routine, not ALL of it, else you’ll destroy your spine.  Now a high level tennis player who has a backhand like a forehand, is better off.  But you get the concern.

Caution

You need to stretch and warm up some prior to the runs.  You also need to be considerate of past posterior chain injuries (along the back of the leg).  If you have had these, then you need to hold yourself to about 70-80% of your max intensity, else you’ll pull a hamstring and be in awful pain for weeks.  But worse, you’ll be sidelined!  If you haven’t done much with high intensity, it is also reason to pull back the reins and go around 60-70% of max intensity.  Build up over time.

If you don’t have a track, don’t worry.  Step off 33 good steps, if you are 5′-5’5″ you want to step off closer to 36 steps (these are pretty wide steps for everyone).  This will be your distance, mark off two objects for start and finish, and go to work.

So as I was saying earlier, I did a similar workout at CF Bridgemill this week.  10 – 30 second all out rows (on a concept 2 rowing machine) followed by 90 seconds of rest.  It was brutal, I felt like I would throw up for sure (didn’t, just felt that way).  My point in sharing, a short duration all out burst with rests in between, will work you harder than you would think possible.

2HeadedCalf

So the quick story on Zelnorm – the commercials were widely popular.  People with words drawn on their stomachs about how bad they felt inside (irritable bowel, or other gastro-intestinal complaints).  At the time it was the only prescription drug for these complaints, so it ran up the totem pole fast in total sales.

There were concerns about the approval of the drug, written about here on the Help for IBS website.  See the gist:

Controversy over Zelnorm approval ~ A consumer advocacy group has attacked the FDA’s approval, claiming that officials were ignoring early signals of Zelnorm risks just as the agency earlier downplayed the bowel inflammations and other complaints that eventually derailed the IBS-diarrhea drug Lotronex. The advocacy group Public Citizen (a national non-profit organization that accepts no government or corporate money) contends that the approval of Zelnorm is a serious mistake by the FDA…

And of course in 2007 the drug is pulled from the market because they found in women especially, the risk of cardiovascular events was seriously inflated, 6 times the normal that is.  Wikipedia’s page does a decent job of telling the story: The FDA alleges a relationship between prescriptions of the drug and increased risks of heart attack or stroke. An analysis of data collected on over 18,000 patients demonstrated adverse cardiovascular events in 13 of 11,614 patients treated with Zelnorm (a rate of 0.11%) as compared with 1 of 7,031 patients treated with placebo (a rate of 0.01%). Novartis alleges all of the affected patients had preexisting cardiovascular disease or risk factors for such, and further alleges that no causal relationship between tegaserod use and cardiovascular events has been demonstrated.[6] On the same day as the FDA announcement, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada announced that it was suspending marketing and sales of the drug in Canada in response to a request from Health Canada.[7]

What is the real point?  80% of our IBS patients have written testimonials at some point or another for our chiropractic care and dietary education.  Ours, is important, because the focus is wellness, not feeling good.  If you aren’t  a believer yet, get your head out of the sand.  This is not just for aches and pains, and as a matter of fact, it isn’t for that at all.  Our job isn’t to make you feel well, its to get you functioning.  No drugs.  You know you want to be drug free, listen hard and stay the course.

If you haven’t been adjusted in the last week or two, get in here and get on track!  The summer is no excuse.  Be Blessed and Be Well! – Dr. E

My Good Friend “Mike”

  1. Mike

For a “Doctor” you are an idiot, because you should well know that this article is not evidence. Who is Sarah Cain? Secondly, the side effect profile is consistent with most vaccines, but by that logic we should stop vaccinating for polio, mumps measles etc etc, but after all the incidence of those diseases is much lower than even the incidence of cervical cancer.

This comment was posted on the Gardasil Useless Daily Sprout from June 17th.  I love it.  SO what has Mike taught me with this post?  That the world is ignorant because we prefer not to think.  I have about 2500 active patients (active is that they are adjusted within a few months time).  We have about 1000 regular (every couple of weeks) people, and of course a few hundred in the middle of corrective care.

The reason I give you these stats, is so that you realize that there is no way that all of you are on the same page with me regarding vaccines.  But the truth is, just about all of you are questioning it, thinking it through, and making a decision that is right for you and your beliefs…. not just because your doc said to.

This is huge.  Simply because you are thinking.  The best healthcare comes about when everyone is their own advocate, challenging opinions and rhetoric, driving for better and questioning the current.  We would still think trans fat was healthy if it weren’t for the push to challenge the corporate driven marketing machine.

So here were my responses.  Trying to be nice, but perhaps I came off a little bit aggressive:

  1. DrEric

Mike – as a an intellectual (which I am sure you must be) someone might say the same could be said about you. Though, I understand that we tend to be locked into belief patterns simply because the world around us has influenced us so. By your logic, you have come to a belief that the vaccines for polio, mumps, measles, rubella, etc etc have done more good than harm. So as the intellectual that you are, outside of using what you believe to be concrete evidence (because the incidence of infectious disease is lower, the vaccines must have done it), what is the “evidence” (using your words), that those vaccines work? Simply to state because they were given, and the diseases are lower does not suffice, simply because the CDC’s own prevalence graphs show significant reduction prior to the national vaccine program ever starting.

I have asked for two decades for some evidence that vaccines work more than natural immunity outside of simple observation. And it doesn’t exist. But I am pleased to change my mind should someone give me a good reason. Two decades, and I have been on the phone with countless pediatrician’s, still no scientific evidence produced.

  2. DrEric

Oh, and indeed. I am an idiot. Some of the things I have done out of health pursuit go beyond crazy, and are simply idiotic. But I tend not to make those mistakes just because someone told me to (aka a pediatrician who has been inducted into logic without debate).

So what in the world am I referencing?  Its about time you saw it, if you haven’t seen it before. This graph shows the prevalence of diseases before and after vaccine implementation.  The first one is measles only.  It should be noted that the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, how much impact did it have?

measles

Pretty simple.  Measles was way down long before the shot (vaccine) was introduced.  So never mind all of the people blaming shots for their kids diseases (ADD/ADHD/Autism and more).  If you didn’t know, my wife was a pediatric occupational therapist for years.  She had a highly successful private practice in the area, and MANY of the parents of the autistic children she saw blamed vaccines, but as my friend Mike says above, that isn’t evidence (in my world, it all adds up to evidence).  But if you throw all of that away, why in the world would you give a measles vaccine based on the chart above?  Cleanliness was the cure, nothing more than cleanliness (which improves immune systems).

This next graph is harder to see, as it covers MANY diseases.  But check it out, and consider the amount of money our country has given to vaccine manufacturers, then decide for yourself if it was all worth it.

All Disease

I hope you understand why I believe research is necessary.  I have never seen a scrap of evidence that proves effectiveness of vaccines.  They saw the diseases reducing, made a vaccine, and called the success their own.

The Importance of Posture

90%

Maybe 80%, but it sure feels like 90 most of the time.  But it doesn’t pay to be a “feel” kind of a guy, I also feel like nobody eats McDonalds any more.  But thats because my kids have never been there, and I am in the micro economy of my office.  Take a look out there, they keep building those things, so I guess people eat there. Oh, yeah.  90% of what?

The problems that I see in people stem from their posture.  But sad for you, and great for me, once you have altered structure through poor posture, you cannot completely return structure without assistance…. mine. 🙂 We start at the age of 5.  Well, for many kids it is before that time.  But we get into our first pre-school class, or kindergarten, and we sit at a desk.  And we are in a good place, it is fun, there are friends, a teacher.   Artistic efforts occupy most of our day, and fortunately at this point we are getting up often, sitting in a circle, playing with toys.  Moving our little bodies in all of the ways that we need to maintain health and function.

But this one thing has begun, the process of sitting at a desk. By the time we are 10, we sit most of the day.  The getting up has left us, and now we slouch, with our lumbar spines reversed, and worse than that, our cervical spines are shifted forward, or even reversed.

When a 12 year old comes in to our office, it is common to see loss of cervical curve, and two times in the past month, I have had teenagers with arthritis in their necks.  Imagine the shock of the parents when their child with no complaint of neck pain, who is being checked as a routine wellness check, is found to have arthritis in their spine.  All due to posture.

So why does posture have such a negative impact?  This guy named Wolff did some research, and got himself a law.  Yeah, pretty cool, according to WikipediaWolff’s law is a theory developed by the German anatomist and surgeon Julius Wolff (1836–1902) in the 19th century that states that bone in a healthy person or animal will adapt to the loads under which it is placed.

The simplest way to explain this, is to picture the spine as bearing load in the posterior or the back part of the spine.  As load is transferred towards the front, you damage the front of the spine and cause degeneration to the disc and vertebral body.  That damage causes displacement of the disc towards the back of the spine, as well as secondary bone forces according to the law above, thus you create degeneration in the back of the spine, which is where the spinal cord is.

Posterior bone spurs are dangerous for one primary reason.  Compression of the spinal cord.  As shown in the work of several MD’s in 2005 at the University of Tokyo when chickens had reversed cervical spines.  In this study, degeneration of the spinal cord was seen in almost all birds with compression of the cord.  Degeneration means demyelination and atrophy.  like MS and ALS.

In chickens – they don’t have bad posture by the way – the way the degeneration was spurred along was to perform c-spine surgery, laminectomy at the C4/C5 level.  Following laminectomy the changes were seen, that very closely mimic someone with a reverse cervical curve secondary to forward head carriage that comes with a life of desk and computer work.

This is the primary reason why we are committed to the idea of lifelong chiropractic care. You don’t need us.  You only need us if you drive, work and live in the culture of today.

Why Philosophy is the start of health

Philosophy.  Funny, when I first heard Chiropractic described as being more about philosophy than science or art (though it is described by many lifelong chiropractors as being equally all three), I was perturbed.  I wanted nothing to do with something that was going to be philosophical, when I felt like the world was moving quickly towards science.

15 years later.

I could defend the importance of a philosophical rooting in health above all else, on any stage, with any opponent, to any length.  After seeing 10,000 patients come through the doors, and many only a few times, it is still enough to gather important insight.  Philosophy is the key.

The hard question is actually how to prove it in a short amount of time, with few words.  And it rest on truth.  Truth is a tricky word, because one man’s truth is a lie to another.  I truly believe that the Earth was created by the God who had shown himself to Moses in the form of a bush, who spoke to Abraham, and eventually placed Christ on the Earth.  To some of you, there is no truth in that at all, but rather myth.

Likewise, I believe the truth is that every single drug that is taken, does more chemical damage to your body, than a drink of fermented grape juice.  Where I know many of you choose to not drink a sip of wine, yet you would take a pill.  So obviously we have areas where we will differ on truth.  And that difference is the key to why philosophy rules the day when it comes to health.

My father was a pharmacist for 45 years before retiring. In that time, he had seen many failed truths.  Drugs that were being distributed to patients because the truth was that they were going to help those patients more than they hurt them.  Well, as so many drugs have been found to do the opposite, we know that the “truth” of the moment, was wrong.  So how do you find health, when slick marketing can have you taking an aspirin a day.  Do you really believe you have an aspirin deficiency?  Because there would be no other reason to take it besides believing that you have a deficiency in aspirin.  Any other reason would suggest you don’t care about the best path to health.

In a world with “Parkay, Butter…. Parkay…” who is going to help insure that 30 years later (that is where we are with parkay now), you don’t find out that your favorite butter alternative is made up of a fat that is found to be deadly to you (trans fat was present as up to 30% of the volume of early margarine, 30%!!)  You see, your only way to safeguard from the folly of today’s science, is to live vintage.  Real vintage, like Genesis vintage.

Philosophy leads the way.  I don’t treat anything, other than with food sources.  I don’t trust anything, other than what is a natural, chemical free food source.  I don’t like to use any type of machine when I exercise, because I want it to mimic manual labor.  We have already tested and seen the failure of just about every machine that has ever set foot in a gym (due to increased injury).

The chiropractic philosophy is one of the most beautiful philosophies out there, and you should be proud of your commitment to it, as it is incredibly respectful of the human body.  There is a power in the body, that grew it into all of the intricate tissues that make up organs and systems.  This power is in the body, as it never leaves until death.  While in it, it animates the tissues, allowing function and healing to occur.  This power originates in the brain, and flows through the nervous system, leveraging breath and nutrient which are delivered through the blood.

That is my definition.  Look at the importance of the flow of it.  From understanding what this power did and does, to seeing its origination in the body and ultimately its ability to leverage other systems to accomplish all of its tasks (healing).  This simple truth, yes… this one is known truth, leads to a philosophy.  Healing comes from within, thus apply effort to this process working as it is supposed to, as your first step towards health, and let all others follow behind.

As a Christian, I pray for healing, but when I do, I pray a prayer of knowledge.  I don’t pop a vioxx in my mouth, and ask God to heal me, when the knowledge exists that the pill is actually creating vascular harm, and damaging the walls of my arteries.  I pray a prayer focused on the specifics of my diet, and for strength in my resolve to my commitments, and insight into any areas that might be hidden from me.  And to assist my ability to show honor and respect to Him through my choices.

Your philosophy is key, I pray you will strive to figure out exactly what yours is.  Be Well and Be Blessed!  – Dr. E
