Hey – a little on healthy living here. Starting with functional fitness. I think it is so cool that we get to see 60+ year old women running around a track and performing overhead squats with 45#. This is cool stuff, and it is The CrossFit Games, happening this week and weekend in California.
Yep, 60+ means what you think, click the image below to watch a video of this performance. The first of many WOD’s (Workout of The Day) that will be done by these women. This week is loaded with events at Games.CrossFit.Com from Masters competitors, to the OPEN division (all ages), and Teams from CrossFit Affiliates around the country.
My old coach at CF Silos is there (Travis Mayer) as well as my current coach from CF Bridgemill (Jessica Denney Phillips). It is a big week for CrossFitters around the country, but the reality is that with the explosive growth of CrossFit, most athletes (the name we give any member of our gyms), don’t even know what is really going on with the Games.
For me, as a part of The Garage Games, the largest competition series in CrossFit by total events; I care a lot about the happenings in California this week. It all means a lot to me. But how about you? I know many of you have seen the ESPN2 produced episodes of the CF Games. But what I want for you, is the dream that you could be there.
Will you make it to the OPEN Division? Maybe. The 40-44 year old masters… perhaps. But you don’t know until you begin to try. And why is it worth trying? Because full function is something that you all deserve. Forever.
So consider the 60+ year old women running around this track. Do you think they would ever not be able to navigate a set of stairs in the next 20 years? Or shower themselves? Or have confidence in their balance and ability to move through uneven terrain whether it be an old cobblestone street, or a dirt trail heading up a mountain? The ability to enjoy your life will be directly impacted by your ability to do life.
Ask my patient who is taking tennis lessons after years off. At 80 years old. She will tell you how important it is to have function, and I will tell you how important her chiropractic and fitness is to her.
I hope you don’t close off because the example I have put in front of you might seem so out of reach, but if you reach for the stars and miss. Falling short is pretty good still.
Be Well and Be Blessed! – Dr. E
