You rarely see me write about these guys, but if you come to my special workshops, you always hear me reference them.  So I figured I would use a re-post as the means of introducing you both to WHY we care about GMO, and WHY we listen to the cornucopia institute.  I personally feel as though they are one of the furthest from being influenced, of all the organizations out there.

You know I love Dr. Mercola, but I tend to feel like he is selling more than he is educating.  Indeed, sales are necessary to support health, but my philosophy.  Eat right, supplement a little, and stay ahead of the stories by using principles to guard your choices.

Genetically Engineered Crops – Why Scientists are Worried

November 29th, 2013

Novel DNA Spreads into the Environment, Livestock and Humans

By Pamela Coleman, PhD

gmosunsafe

The food in grocery stores today is unlike the food eaten by our ancestors, even a few hundred years ago.  Part of the difference is easy access to highly processed foods that contain refined sugar and chemical preservatives.  A more significant difference is the high percentage of genetically engineered (GE) crops that are the source for our food.  The corporations who developed this technology tell us that it’s safe, so why are independent scientists worried?

There are many reasons for concern.  The GE crops are created by using a new genetic process to insert an unknown amount of DNA that has the potential to spread in the environment in unpredictable ways.  Independent research on the effects of eating these new foods has been suppressed when it shows evidence that the GMOs are harmful to health.

Novel genetics

Traditionally, humans have bred new varieties of plants by transferring pollen between two plants of the same type, for example from one corn plant to another.  This mimics the exchange of DNA (genetic material, or genes) that occurs naturally without human intervention, and the resulting plants contain only plant DNA.

Genetic engineering (GE) is fundamentally different, because it uses a microorganism (typically a bacterium) to transfer DNA and insert it into the DNA of the plant.  The new DNA contains the desired gene (such as herbicide resistance), plus a gene for antibiotic resistance, plus an unknown amount of bacterial DNA with unknown functions.  The process is not at all precise, partly because the process causes mutations in the plant’s DNA, and partly because even a single change in the plant DNA can give rise to multiple changes other than the one intended.

Spread of engineered DNA

In 2012, GE crops were planted worldwide, on 25 million acres of land.  After GE DNA is released into the environment through the planting of a GE crop, the DNA can spread through the environment to plants, fungi, bacteria, and animals, in ways that are difficult to predict and impossible to control.

It is well known that GE DNA can spread from plant to plant, through the transfer of pollen from a GE crop to non-GE plant, a process called cross-pollination.  For example, GE corn can contaminate non-GE corn, and GE sugar beets can contaminate organic spinach, because they are closely related.  This is a huge concern among seed producers and organic farmers, because the seeds of the cross-pollinated crops, and all their offspring, are contaminated by the GE DNA.  When GE canola transferred its glyphosate-tolerance genes wild mustard this new DNA was able to persist in the weed populations for six years.[1] (Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.)

Less well known is the transfer of GE DNA from plants to bacteria.  In the soil environment, the GE DNA can persist in the soil for at least a year,[2] where it can be taken up by natural soil bacteria and be incorporated into their genomes.[3]  This spread would not be detected in the initial field tests of GE crops, because it is rare, and scientists were not specifically looking at this type of environmental contamination.  As GE crops become widespread and are planted repeatedly for many years, the likelihood increases that GE DNA will spread to soil bacteria.

GE DNA can also be transferred to the bacteria that inhabit the human digestive system.  After volunteers ate just one meal of GE soy, bacteria in their digestive systems contained the DNA from the GE soy foods.[4]

The GE DNA has not only been found in the bacteria, it can also be transferred directly into animals.  When livestock were fed GE crops, the GE DNA was taken up by the animal’s organs and detected in the meat, milk, and fish that people eat.  [5][6][7][8][9]

Questionable research

The uncontrollable spread of GE DNA is a huge issue, in part because of the limited information on the long-term health effects of these novel crops.

Biotech companies claim that genetically engineered crops have been well-researched, and have been proven safe for humans and animals, but independent scientists dispute that claim.  In October of 2013, more than 230 scientists signed the following statement: “We strongly reject claims … that there is a ‘scientific consensus’ on GMO safety.”[10]  (Read the full story here.)

Industry studies have been conducted by the corporations themselves, without review by independent scientists, and the data may not be available for public access.[11]  This process is very different from the accepted scientific standard, where all results are first reviewed by peers (knowledgeable scientists who did not conduct the study) before it is published.

The studies that are available are often inadequate.  Feeding studies are conducted on laboratory animals for only a short period of time – often 30 to 90 days.  Food that does no detectable harm in 90 days may be quite harmful when eaten over the decades of a

human lifespan!  Long-term studies are not required by regulators anywhere in the world.[12]

Independent scientists who have conducted longer-term feeding studies over the lifespan of the lab rats, typically two years, have raised serious concerns about the health effects of GE crops.  Even over this shorter time period, scientists reported harm to the liver, kidneys, digestive and immune systems, as well as other health problems.[13][14]

Industry response has been to discredit these independent scientists, rather than to support peer-reviewed research.  Monsanto discourages farmers from research, by requiring them to sign a “Stewardship Agreement,” which states:  “Grower may not conduct research on Grower’s crop produced from Seed other than to make agronomic comparisons and conduct yield testing for Grower’s own use.”

In 2009, 26 scientists were so concerned about the suppression of research on GE crops that they made a formal complaint to the US Environmental Protection Agency. They wrote, “No truly independent research can be legally conducted on many critical questions involving these crops.”  Said one scientist: “If a company can control the research that appears in the public domain, they can reduce the potential negatives that can come out of any research.” [15]

Millions of acres of genetically engineered crops have been planted and incorporated into our foods, with little understanding of their health effects.  This opened a Pandora’s box, as the unique bacterial genes spread to other plants, bacteria, and animals.  Independent scientists are being prevented from testing the raw ingredients in our nation’s food supply, even as more and more acres are being planted to these untested crops.  Meanwhile, the corporations who tell us that biotech crops are safe can reap huge profits from the sale of GE seeds.

Many consumers are employing the Precautionary Principle — avoiding GE foods as much as possible until research proves that they are safe.  The best options are certified organic food or purchasing directly from farmers who raise non-GE crops.

Full of Thanks for Thanksgiving!

Today I am thankful and proud to be an uncle!  My sister gave birth 2 days ago to a beautiful baby boy.  I arrived at the hospital just in time to hear a lullaby over the loud speaker, signaling that I had just become an uncle and my sister a mother for the very first time.  I was escorted down the hall by my brother in law to meet baby Foster. Seeing him for the first time, taking some of his first breaths of air, and seeing the world outside of the womb for the first time was an experience that I’ll never forget.  I could see the beauty that culminated after 9 long months of pregnancy.  The body is truly a miracle… the awesome Nervous System at the center of it all. And to think, that this little guy…with a healthy beating heart, a fully intact nervous system… complete with 5 senses and a spine protecting it, a properly functioning immune system, digestive system… I could go on and on… was just 2 cells only 9 months prior, which contained the information to produce a miraculous creation.

I learned a few facts about pregnancy and birth that I would like to share with you all, because it can become very apparent how beautifully designed we really are.

Fact numero uno:  The baby’s vision is tuned to mom.  They can see only the exact distance from the mother’s arms to the mother’s face.

Fact 2:  During vaginal birth, the baby gets his/her first dose of probiotics from the vaginal walls.  This bacteria is known as Bifidus Infantis.  Building a strong immune system begins just seconds before they enter the world!

Fact 3: Babies with a healthy nervous system will be able to display many reflexes, though they’ve never learned them.  They are encoded within our genes and within our nervous systems!

Rooting reflex- in response to stroking their cheeks, the baby will turn its  head toward the touch and attempt to suck

Grasping reflex- press into their palm and they will grab on

Blinking reflex- in response to a puff of air , the infant closes their eyes.  (doesn’t seem that impressive, but the body is born with the intelligence to protect itself from environmental hazards… the key is,

from the very first second, the body’s innate intelligence is hard at  work!)

Stepping reflex- in response to holding the infant so that its feet barely  touch a surface, the infants leg will “step” forward as an automatic reflex.  We were born to move.

These are just a few of the many wonderful reflexes that our innate intelligence provides us with.  (He even sneezed, a sign that his nervous system had detected and fought off a pathogen before it could enter his circulation!)

Fact 4- The mother’s sense of smell increases dramatically. The mother’s nervous system is now capable of smelling minute toxins that could be damaging to the fetus during pregnancy.  Mothers become increasingly aware of coffee, smoke, alcohol, and household chemicals in their environment.

Fact 5- Breast milk is made in perfection.  Antibodies from mom’s fully formed immune system are passed through the breast milk to give the baby an immunity to its environment.  Mom’s immune system is specifically attuned to her environment, and since the baby’s environment is mom’s environment… it works out very well.  Antibodies are not the only thing the baby receives from breast milk though.  Similarly, oligosaccharides are passed down which give an added boost to the baby’s immune system… attaching to bacteria and viruses and showing them the way out.  Yet another form of immunity is passed along in the form of white blood cells.  Besides immune function, the baby receives nutrition through a plethora of vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, and carbohydrates.  Sodium and potassium come in a 1:10 ratio… a ratio conducive to eliminating waste and maintaining a pristine internal environment, while providing a healthy support to the newly developing nervous system.

Corn Syrup laden formula milk on the other hand… can do no such things, but only deprive the baby of a healthy immune system and support the health of a pathogenic bacteria in the gut.

Fact 6- Touch is vital.  A multitude of studies have shown the importance of touch in infancy.  Those babies that receive a lack of human touch grow up with a sense of a hostile world and develop behavioral, emotional, and social problems. Babies that receive love and affection by touch will grow up happy and with a sense of security.  One study illustrated the vast difference in levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, between orphaned babies and those with a parental upbringing.  Chronic increases in cortisol break down the health of the body in every imaginable way.

On that note… the body begins to grow through stimulation to the nervous system.  Touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight, and gravity are all stimulating to the nervous system and trigger growth.  Everything that the nervous system can detect will shape our worldview, our character, and our health.

Oh, and by the way… Dad is a chiropractor.  You better believe Foster received his first adjustment already!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and take the time to appreciate how special life really is! Dr. Mike Moss

Thanksgiving Menu

Last year I was in a resort kitchenette having a clean, glycemic reduced T day.  So here is the menu from last year.

Organic Turkey – we go organic because of the chemical rich injected solution, as well as the feed used with fowl.  By their nature, turkey typically are more clean as the are harder to cage in farm raised situations, but to be sure, you have to go organic.

No potato Mashed potatoes –  mashed cauliflower has become common inside and outside of the health world.  Using pasture butter (Kerrygold) and garlic as the seasoning, you will never know it isn’t potatoes!

Gravy – you cannot have “potatoes” without gravy!   So how do you thicken gravy without using any grain? Almond flour. Just stir while adding the almond meal.

Flax meal bread – the recipe is in the “Green book” in the office, and when you get good at it, you will be baking fluffy, airy bread with no grain.

Quinoa – this simple grain that acts like a seed is perfect for giving some substance.  Boil, drain, butter and salt!

Mixed green salad – simple.

Cranberry sauce – start with raw cranberries, mash them slightly in a pot, add just a bit of water so that you can stir and heat, add some xylitol to taste (or stevia).

Pumpkin pie – pumpkin pack, eggs, some half and half, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg And stevia. Almond flour crust made up of almond flour, eggs, stevia, baking soda and powder.

Whipped cream – organic heavy whipping cream with a little bit of sweetener, either stevia or xylitol. Whip.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving, and hope you find some ways to stay healthier! Be well and Be blessed – Dr. E

Giving Thanks!

My annual tradition is BACK!  Writing about Thanksgiving, the best holiday of the year.  Why?  Because what is better than stopping everything, and realizing you are blessed?  Blessed beyond belief.  Every single one of us, regardless of situation, are blessed beyond belief!

So, Thanksgiving.  What does it mean to be thankful?  We all fall short of reaching our “thank” potential on a daily basis.  But when we reach for it, we can really hit a pretty strong level of “thanks”!  Its how I start my days, been doing it ever since I went to Camp Transformation about five years ago.  I came away with a plan to be at peace every morning, and so almost every morning since; I wake up and I start saying “thanks” in my head.  Over and over, listing off whatever comes to my mind.

Thank you God for my wife, thank you for my daughter Brooke, for Ansley, thank you for the dog staring at me hoping I’ll let him out, thank you for this house that protects us, and for providing the comfort it brings, thank you for HealthSprout and for chiropractic, thank you for the opportunity to change lives through my career, and for the stories of health that we have seen, thank you for my health, and for the lessons I have learned through challenge…

It goes on and on.  Some mornings, I wrap up in a minute or two, others it lasts for five to ten. This one habit has been the single most important part of my life for the last five years in finding joy in any situation.  So whenever Thanksgiving comes along, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming thanks for all that is in my life.  Even the part where I lost my left eye sight.

So lets turn this towards your life.  How easy is it to be thankful for everything?  For the great things, the awful things, and everything in between?  I know Thanksgiving sure makes it easier, but there is a warmth wrapped up in this week that will make all things just  a bit easier.  But what about every other day?  Can you stop and see the beauty in your pain?

My wife is better.  We don’t know if she is better, but the Lyme disease that began about 5 months ago or so, seems to have drifted off… or at least gone dark for a bit (this is actually relatively common, where the bacteria takes a cyst form that isn’t killed by the antibiotic that is used).  Right now, we are very thankful for what we are seeing.  Very thankful and hopeful that this is it.  But, though it isn’t as easy, I can find thanks in the effort to get here.  The pain she has gone through leading to this point, because it strengthens our desire to know more, more about health, and about this disease.  It gives us a desire to reach out and be helpful to others if we can, and to fixate on assisting those in places that are dark and desperate.

It is hard for many of us to find the joy in the fight.  To see how difficulty shapes us into a better version of us.  It is hard to see how every difficult situation is another way to grow.  We are all guilty of being overwhelmed.  But there is no advantage in being overwhelmed, the advantage is in being able to let the stress slip from us, and to focus on growth.

I think it is awesome that as I look at my life right now at 41 years old, I can see countless goals that I had set that never came to fruition.  I have reached for the stars along the way, and in so many ways I have fallen short.  But it is the mission that is worth it all.  The desire to fight on and to grow.  Thanksgiving as an historical moment, is all about this.  How many of those early settlers died?  Most of them.  45 of 102 who made the journey on the Mayflower were dead after their first winter.  57 carried on.

It wasn’t until Abraham Lincoln saw a need to unite the country in 1863 that America began to celebrate Thanksgiving.  And in those early days, it was an inspired holiday, where thanks for life was plenty.  Why?  Because they were dead in the idle of the civil war, which ended up taking 750,000 lives.

750,000

I am not sure that I could ever have a thought again that wasn’t thankful when I consider that number.  We all have an awesome responsibility to lead each other in joy.  To be thankful for each other, and to share that thanks with everyone.  To appreciate others and show them how important they are to you, regardless of what is in your heart or mind in the moment, to reach out of our situations and to be an inspiration of love.

I am thankful for all of you, and pray that you have an awesome week that leaves an imprint forever.

Mexico halts all GMO corn from being planted

Friday, October 25, 2013 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Just days before a recent March Against Monsanto protest that took place globally on October 12, Mexico, the geographical birthplace of modern-day corn, instituted a regulatory ban on all plantings of genetically modified (GM) varieties of this staple food crop. A victory for food freedom and agricultural integrity, the announcement was made at a press conference in Mexico City on October 10, where officials notified the public and the press that all GM corn plantings, including pilot commercial plantings, were to be immediately suspended.

Though not necessarily permanent, the injunction came after years of protests against transgenic crops, particularly those that threaten the persistence of staple crops like corn. For Mexico, corn, also known as maize, is a primary food crop for which there are hundreds, if not thousands, of heirloom varieties currently being grown. If GM corn varieties are allowed to be cultivated alongside them on any considerable scale, Mexico’s entire agricultural heritage could become extinct.

“[T]he decision came after years of lobbying by activists who noted that Mexico — the birthplace of modern-day maize and its cultivation — knows a little bit about how to create various disease-resistant strains of corn, given Mexicans in one form of tribe or another, have been doing it for millennia,” writes Gustavo Arellano for the OC Weekly.

Despite a moratorium on GM corn cultivation in Mexico that dates back to 1998, many native maize varieties have still tested positive for low levels of modified genes, which proves that GMOs cannot be contained and have a tendency to contaminate other crops. Because of this, a coalition of 53 groups and individuals, which includes scientists and human rights groups, filed a lawsuit last year to suspend all field trials of GM corn and other experiments that could be causing this contamination.

Agreeing with their argument, a Mexican judge later ruled that all field trials of GM corn in Mexico must end, citing specific and imminent environmental risks. A press release recently issued by the non-governmental organization La Coperacha affirms this decision, noting that Mexican law requires justices to protect the interests of the people rather than the interests of big business, which in this case means multinational chemical companies like Monsanto.

Mexico will still import GMO corn, despite ban

The ruling is timely, as many areas of Mexico have been pressured in recent years to accept not only field trials of GM corn but also commercial plantings, despite their risks to native corn varieties. Unfortunately though, the ruling does not go far enough, say some, as Mexico will continue to import GM corn from other countries like the U.S. — roughly one-third of the corn Mexico consumes is imported.

Chiropractic as a Lifetime Choice

I am not biased.  Just a lifetime chiropractor telling you to get adjusted for a lifetime.  Not me.  Its kind of like a surgeon telling you to get surgery, right?  Well, actually, nope, not at all.  One of the biggest differences, is that once a surgery is over, the surgeon’s commitment to your life and health is on a fast decline.  Even if they are emotionally tied to you, or (hopefully) morally tied to you, the tie will quickly fade, as the surgeon’s life is built upon more surgery.  Not management post surgery.

The reason I gave you that example, isn’t to point out surgery in particular, though I do believe you need to think twice about cutting and altering this body that has been divinely appropriated to you.  Rather, the example is to shed light on the general position of the medical profession.  Medicine is about treatment, and treatment is about diagnosing illness or disease, which in turn is about the point in time when there is a lack of health.  This is directly opposite to what chiropractic is at the essence.

Sure, most chiropractors have ruined that because they are scared.  They want to fit in to a medical world, so they tout their pain relief and back pain neck pain results.  Disease mongering, not focusing on well being.   For those of you focused on one year results… you’ll sadly never realize what there is to gain on the lifetime side of chiropractic care.  It is an abundance of wellness, and health improvement.  And the really cool difference between that mindset and the medical one described above… my accountability will never cease.  I am here, and will be, for a long time.

So we choose to discuss nervous system function.  Wellness and increased health.   We believe in maintaining the human frame and being caught up in the management of health, and function, and diet and exercise.  We look at the combination of these things as being critical to ones overall health, and we boldly say – LIFETIME, because we have found it to be true.  Lifetime is necessary if you want to get the benefit.  Now, the fortunate thing, is that you get to make decisions along the way as to how you will use this.  But if you pull back aggressively from culture, and follow our lead, you won’t regret it.

But what happens if you don’t stick with us?  Well, 9 times out of 10, no matter how strong you are in your belief that you don’t want the medical model governing your family, you will end up in the medical world, and that model governing your family.  Over the years I have had many young families strong in the belief of their potential for health, who have emailed me asking for help with a child after a diagnosis.  In most cases, I find out they have been seeking unnecessary medical interventions.  Why?  Because the MD knows nothing to help you outside of a med 90% of the time.  So your strong convictions become weak arguments, that fade into fear of what the doc tells you, which leads to unnecessary treatment.  Is all treatment unnecessary?  Of course not.  But in the world of managed care, fading to Obamacare, there is no time to determine who needs to do what.  So lets medicate and figure out the next step once we see the response.  That is the typical party line.

Your brain is the most incredible creation on the planet. Perfect in its ability to maintain your body.  Magnificent in every way, more so than a beautiful mountain range, or a sunset over the ocean.  It presents its magnificence to your spinal cord, which in turn will pass that on to your body.  Take the spinal cord down a notch, and your body follows.  Slowly, imperceptible, but definitely down.  Ignore it, hope that you are all right, and you will find yourself lacking in healing, eventually in function, then ultimately life.

I am not a theorist.  I am a fact based practitioner who has seen it all (or close to it), over the last decade of seeing somewhere around 10,000 unique people through our offices.  That teaches you a lot.  Trust that God has given you a path towards health, get confident in your body, but make the changes needed to have cause for confidence.  I recall a woman saying to me, I want my child to be like yours, and have no vaccines.  What do I need to do?

“Well, do what we do.  Adjust, eat right, exercise, sleep well, and avoid toxins.”  She said “I can do all but the adjustment, does that matter?”  – Of course, to me, I think it is the most important piece… “if you cannot get adjusted, then you might want to get vaccinated.”  I wasn’t kidding.  I take it that serious.

Orthorexia… Come on!

Written by Dr. Michael Moss

Well, I felt compelled to write this daily sprout today because a week ago I heard some disturbing news.  It was actually funny at the time I heard it, but when the reality of the situation set in it frustrated me beyond words. One of the students at Life University opened Maximized Living club this past week with the news that a disease has been devastating our country for years.  What was the diagnosis? Orthorexia.

It is defined as “an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy foods”. Thank the good Lord that this disorder can be found, and is treatable! With medication of course!  Clearly, when Big Pharma found out about this awful disorder, they jumped at the chance to medicate these poor individuals, who would think that focusing on health, and compromising their normality in culture would somehow be wise.  Well, of course, these are completely healthy individuals.  Beyond healthy by the standards that we use, but consider this:

It’s a market they’ve never been able to touch.  They reached in by lowering the acceptable levels of cholesterol to a level that most people are found to be at.  But now… now they can call all of us here at HealthSprout…. DISEASED.

Now, let’s take a look at the type of medication we’re dealing with here.  Orthorexia falls into a category with obsessive compulsive behaviors.  Antidepressants have been the medication of choice for such disorders.  Specifically: Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac. What are the side effects of antidepressants you ask? Let’s look ’em up…

According to wedmd and I’ve just pulled up Prozac side effects. I’m going to have to scale back here because I didn’t realize there would be so many so I’ll just pull a few… dry mouth, indigestion, dizziness, insomnia, diarrhea, loss of appetite (because it’s better to eat medication than it is food..), anxiousness (they have something to counter act this, time to look into anti-anxiety medications… and by the way I haven’t gotten to the severe symptoms yet), hives, trouble breathing, ED (have something for that too), Neuro-peptic Malignant Syndrome, Seizures, Suicidal thoughts, mild degree of Mania…. All of this risk, just to ease your mind that you aren’t too obsessed with eating healthy.  This should frustrate you beyond words!

Especially, if you have come to one of our movie nights and seen Generation Rx, Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, or Doctored (which we are showing again next Thursday by the way… get on that! 🙂

I pulled this great excerpt from MayoClinic.com

a small number of people seem to become obsessed with the “perfect diet.” These individuals fixate on eating foods that make them feel pure and healthy — to the extent that they avoid foods with any:

Artificial colors, flavors or preservatives

Pesticides, genetic modification

Unhealthy fat, sugar or added salt

THIS IS A HUGE RED FLAG… one of the most widely respected sources for health information is indoctrinating the American people with this horrible information.

The real reason I was going to write this sprout was to shed light on the on the myriad of fictional diseases that are profitable to the pharmaceutical companies, and the medical doctors that deem these “disorders” dangerous enough to treat with harsh medications.

orthorexia

shift work disorder (drug for this invented disorder could kill you)

high cholesterol (no correlation whatsoever with heart disease)

restless leg syndrome (the list of addictive and deadly drugs to treat this makes me dizzy, and we have solved this for COUNTLESS number of people with Juice Plus)

ADHD (the scientific father of ADHD admitted it to be a prime example of a fictitious disease)

This topic reminded me about a conversation I had with one of my friends a few years back when the drug SENSA came out… I told them to watch and wait as stories will start to pour in regarding the side effects of this drug.. just wait a year or two. Well its 2 and ½ years later and I’m curious.

Severe kidney pain, gall bladder attack, intestinal blockage, trouble breathing, hives, dizziness, loose bowels, high spikes in blood pressure, vision problems, extreme abdominal pain, peritonititis…… etc.

Concluding, this isn’t just a one-time thing. This is a highly reproducible experiment.  When a new fad drug comes out, and is pushed on us, and seems “too good to be true”… bet that it is.  While all drugs have side effects… the most dangerous ones are the one’s you’ve heard of.  So next time you see a drug being heavily marketed to you, make a bet with someone that that drug is dangerous and deadly.  Please don’t let your friends or family get sucked into these powerful drug marketing campaigns!  Avoid mayoclinic, webmd, and other major information sources run by people that don’t know how to achieve optimum health.  Use sites like mercola.com, naturalnews.com, greenmedinfo.com, westonaprice.org… etc.  You’ll be healthier for it!

Why Microwave Popcorn Is An Absolute Health Nightmare

If you or someone you know is still eating microwave popcorn, listen up! I can’t tell you how many countless times I used to eat microwave popcorn when I worked in an office. My co-workers would buy one of those packs from the vending machine in the break room and pop that sucker right into the microwave and the whole floor would smell DELICIOUS! I just couldn’t help myself. It was the one thing in the vending machine that always had to be refilled week after week – way before the stale peanuts.

I’m so glad I stopped that habit, when I finally gave up my use of microwaves, because let me tell you, this stuff is horrible for your health and here’s why…

Popcorn

The Bag

The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.

The Contents

Here’s a snapshot of several popular popcorn brands and the ingredients they contain.

Popular Popcorn Brands

Even though there are no sources of genetically modified popcorn kernels being produced (that’s saved for other varieties of corn), there are several other GMO ingredients in the form of oil or emulsifiers to be found in these popcorn flavors. GMOs have never been tested long term on human beings and are linked to a slew of health issues that are rising in this country. All of these brands do not use organic corn either, so you can be sure they contain harmful pesticides.

Brands like PopSecret and Jolly Time still use trans fat, which is considered one of the most deadly fats available because it is associated with 20,000 heart attacks a year and over 7,000 deaths according to the CDC.

Proply Gallate that is found in PopSecret is one of those ingredients that’s being phased out in the rest of the world, but still being used here for a preservative in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It’s linked to all sorts of health issues like skin rashes, stomach issues and breathing problems.

TBHQ that is found in Smart Balance, stands for “Tertiary Butylhydroquinone.” It’s a dead giveaway that you shouldn’t be eating this, if food companies have to use an acronym for a long chemical name on the ingredient label.

TBHQ is a chemical made from butane (a very toxic gas) and can only be used at a rate of 0.02 percent of the total oil in a product. Why is there a limit to this? Maybe because eating only 1 gram of this toxic preservative has been shown to cause all sorts of issues, from ADHD in children, to asthma, allergies and dermatitis to dizziness and even has caused stomach cancer in laboratory animals.

Limiting TBHQ to a certain percentage, is the same logic the FDA made when allowing a product to still contain 0.5 grams of transfat and be labeled “transfat free.” If you are consuming processed foods, eating at fast food restaurants or chains that use processed foods you are consuming an overload of preservatives and other chemicals.
