Vaccines! Autism!

The doctor who first published a paper in the Lancet 1998 exploring a connection between MMR and autism is being attacked by the media again. If you’ve seen the sensationalized headlines it portrays one message.  “Do not trust anyone who tells you vaccines can cause autism. The headline read “Autism-Vaccine Link Fraud”. Implying that vaccines have absolutely nothing to with autism. But this isn’t new. It’s part of an ongoing campaign that involves the adage if you repeat something long enough people will believe it.

While vaccination may not cause every case of autism it has been shown to cause autism symptoms and brain inflammaition and awards have been settled in court by the U.S. government.

Thousands of parents have watched their healthy children receive a vaccine and proceed to regress neurologically and behaviorally.

To say that vaccines do not cause autism is false.  Absolute NO study has proven that vaccines do not cause autism because none of the studies done have been designed to do so. The best that the scientific studies so far can say is that “we can not confirm that MMR causes autism”. None of the studies have looked at vaccines in general or the entire schedule of vaccination. Neither has there been a totally unvaccinated study vs. vaccinated autism/health study. The best that science can say is that “we don’t know”. Yet a certain sect of people keep saying the debate is over “vaccine do not cause autism. Even a former NIH director has said that we just don’t know.

“I think that the government or certain public officials in the government have been too quick to dismiss the concerns of these families without studying the population that got sick. I think public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis as irrational without sufficient studies of causation.”
Dr. Bernadine Healy, former Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), largest U.S. federal agency responsible for conducting and supporting medical research. Dr. Healy has no known conflicts of interest in the vaccine-autism debate.

But why has Dr. Wakefield been specifically targeted for attack over a 12 year period when his study didn’t make any conclusions on autism and vaccines? He specifically stated in his paper that his study could not make any conclusions about the cause of autism. Ageofautism.com has several rebuttals on their website about the controversey.

No new study has been done. No one has ever seriously refuted Wakefield’s essential findings, which were: the twelve children had autism; they were referred to him because they also had bowel disease (Wakefield is a gastroenterologist); parents of eight of the children reported onset of autism at about the time they received the MMR vaccine;  the children had residual measles virus in their guts. The authors found no causal relationship between autism and MMR but concluded the issue needed more study. In a press conference later Wakefield said if it were his children he would have them vaccinated separately for measles, mumps, and rubella, an option available in the UK at the time but since withdrawn.

Wakefield’s reputation has been thoroughly trashed in the media. His UK medical license has been revoked. In the ongoing furor most of the original authors, like Galileo, recanted. But excoriating one doctor for challenging the safety of one vaccine isn’t going to do much for restoring confidence in that vaccine of for vaccines in general. It isn’t going to do much for getting at the truth either. UK public health officials made an example of Wakefield. It would take a courageous researcher to take on a project that might find fault with the childhood vaccination program. Precious few have.

The fact is incidence of autism soared about twenty years ago at about the time the number of childhood vaccinations increased dramatically. Claiming the issue has been studied to death isn’t going to work until public officials actually do the study. The truth is they haven’t. No one has looked seriously at the cumulative effect of so many vaccines during pregnancy and in very small children. It has been obvious to the autism community, though not until very recently to health officials or the medical community, that autism can’t be simply genetic. It must have environmental triggers. Until ruled out definitively vaccines remain suspect. Parents have been pleading for years for a straightforward comparison of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children. So far public officials have refused, in all appearance for fear of what they might find. They are going to have to do it though. If autism is as much more common among the vaccinated as it appears to be we need to know why. There must be something we can do to make the program safer. Autism isn’t going away by itself. Until we find out what’s causing it and do something about it, it will remain pandemic. That’s a fact.

Why we adjust…

We see a lot of patients in our office, for a lot of different reasons.  Well, they come for a lot of different reasons I should say.  We actually see them for only one reason, and that would include you… one reason.  Though there might be thousands of possible complaint variations: I have headaches, I have neck pain, I have TMJ, irritable bowel, indigestion, low back pain, etc.  There is only one cause for treatment in our office, subluxation.

It is important to put this out, because even though you might visit us for any of the above reasons above, that is not why we adjust.  Subluxation – the misalignment of your vertebrae, in such a fashion that there is interference with nerve flow… better described as the flow of life.  So if the flow of life is interrupted, then wouldn’t it seem as though there were much worse consequences than back pain?  So when you walk in the room, and you say “my back still hurts”, or “I slipped and fell, and now my neck hurts”.  You are often trying to relay “I have a pain, can you fix it”… to which my response would be, “no, your pain is of little concern to me, however let me see if that pain is being caused by a distrubance in the very flow of life that keeps your hody working, and let me see if it appears to be something that I can help improve”.

We adjust you to save your life.  Does it need saving?  Perhaps not in the short term, but if you live for any length of time with an interference in the messages that your brain is sending to your heart per se.  It won’t be long until that heart displays effects of the lack of communication.  Weakening in the valve function leading to murmurs, disruption in the accelerator nerves, causing palpatations… and over time a general weakness in cellular replication leading to tissue disease, atrophy and death.

Though you might have pain between your shoulders, I am going to adjust you to save your life.  It would be easy for me to fall into the pain model, and to focus on what adjustment you might need to feel better.  But what if I forget about the area that has been shown to have dysfunction… how long can we avoid it and hope to be doing the right thing.  Subluxation doesn’t sleep.  Time and aging move forward, so without full healing traveling through your nervous system, it is only time before we realize the error of not aggressively pursuing wellness for your spine.

We have seen both in our office, and through chiropractic published research, that the longer someone has been under chiropractic care, the better off they are.  Both in how they feel, and how they function.  One such study tested serum thiol levels (a hormone that repairs DNA, which basically means an anti-aging hormone).  In this study they found that the highest levels of DNA repairing thiols existed in people who had been chiropractic patients regularly for seven plus years.  Makes me think I should get all of my patients to commit to seven years of care before they could possibly be released!

Use the New Year

I write this Daily Sprout every year.  And with the New Year upon us, it is time to get you focused again!

Who could sit back, and without evidence of it, ever believe that the changeover of one day to the next, with nothing other than a date to distinguish it, would be enough to change some one’s life?  Man, not me!  Even with all the evidence in the world of what a new year can do for someone, it just seems ridiculous!  Now let me clarify, I am all about the “make a decision, so just do it now” kind of living.

I have laughed outloud (and been met with frowns for doing so) at the idea of deciding to never eat X again… after I eat it just this one last time!  I can see making a commitment to a strict diet for a month, or two, and having that last meal.  But what is the goal here?  Health for a month, or health for a life.  Lifetime decisions take lifetime efforts.  OK, so back on track, my point is, on January 1, as much as it doesn’t make sense, you have a fresh start.  Yep.  A clean slate.

It doesn’t make sense because everything that is happening right now, is going to affect 2011.  But still, there is something magical about crossing into a new year.  We keep track of our finances year to year, we look at the cumulative positives and negatives year to year; “2008 was a good year, we were healthier than ever that year” (makes you wonder if something bad came on December 30th, if it would have ruined the year).  So instead of fighting against it, which is what part of me wants to do, I am full bear for it! 

Everything that is behind you is just that, behind you!  Everything that is in front of you, is literally the new you.  Ready to go, ready to rock.  Nothing to stop you from being who you want, following the path that is designed for you, and literally changing the very fabric of who you are, or what you stand for, or how you live.  For most of you, those words are too big for what is in store for you, but if that is achievable, then don’t you think you can find a little more peace in your life.  Perhaps a little less stress?  Each of you is just as capable at doing something ridiculously amazing as the next one.

Dr. Ben Lerner came up with a little saying year’s ago, and I have been pursuing it ever since.  “To be more successful than you are busy”.  I had seven offices at one point, they were all mildly successful, and the overall success was worth the effort, in a worldly view.  But I was really busy.  When that idea stuck in my mind, I started changing everything, i stopped splitting my time between Roswell and Woodstock, and came here full time.  I let two of the offices go almost immediately.  I started looking for exit strategies on the other locations, and while I did this, I pursued my patients with intention and desire.  Desire for them to know health, and intention for them to realize that chiropractic is a lifestyle, and a path to a lifetime of wellness.

Our practice doubled in visits, and we saw about 300 patients a week.  Further changes were made to the other offices, and before you know it we saw 500 patients in a week.  Once we got down to two other offices, with minimal intervention on my part, we got to the 800 patient mark.  Which we have been sitting at or around, for over a year.  Now, I am busy, but it is because I chose to launch a gym too, and that gym decided to do events, large events.  But the success is evident, and I don’t mean financial.  I mean love and enjoyment!  It is an absolute victory to be surrounded by the people who are following the path to health.  In my office, and in my gym, there are nothing but people who have a desire to be healthy!

Awesome!  So this is it, this is your wake up call.  In just over a week, the new year will be here.  I am going to make some crazy plans for what I am going to achieve in 2011, and I am going to plan my 2012 pretty well too.  I have some big goals, and some of those involve major changes in the way I do life every single day.  I hope you will join me, and do the same for yourself!

Surviving The Holidays

The “Holidays” tend to do a lot of damage to people.  From the stresses that people “accept” to the food that they love, to the financial wreckage that is left behind them.  It is a pretty rough ride for many people.  I would guess that a significant part of the damage has already been done, here, just five days before Christmas day.

However, regardless of what you have stressed about thus far, what you have set yourself up for as stresses in January, or what you have eaten, there is a considerable amount of decision left, and as your health coach, I want IN on the decision making!

So first off, on the stress thing.  Please, please remember that you make your decisions.  You are in charge of your choices.  Regardless of what might seem like the “right thing to do”, the wise choice is not always the one that seems culturally correct.  Sometimes you simply need to say no, and pull back, gain some sanity and perspective.   This is so important, there is a purpose for which you were made, and keeping true to that purpose in the face of busy, is so important!

OK, let’s get to the food thing.  First off, you will likely think I am crazy if you have never been to one of our food/diet talks, but if you have been through our advanced training, then you realize that I am all about High Fat, Low Carbohydrate eating.  So how does this play out when in the holidays?  Well, it is easy to be high fat, but with cookies, fudge, other chocolates, pies, cakes, etc.  You are staring carbohydrate in the face all the time.

So what do you do?  Just avoid it all?  I would say no, simply because it becomes painful in a social way to say no to everything.  But I would surely encourage you to do better than most, and one of the best ways to do that, is to rid your household of the garbage, except when festivities arise.  Don’t keep cookies around, don’t make goodies that you plan on giving away, until you are ready to give them away.  Or if you do, package and seal them as soon as they are made, just don’t leave it lying around!

Next, think about planning your day around a total carb load.  If you know you are headed for some carbs, you have a party, there is dessert lined up, cookies are coming, etc.  Then watch your eating that day, don’t have cereal for breakfast, stick with eggs.  Watch the sandwich for lunch, keep the bread out of the diet.  Keep the fruit low, and ride high on the vegetables.  Keep the nuts coming, and be sure to avoid fruit juices and other high carbohydrate drinks.

Activity tends to suffer through this time as well.  I have invited all of you to come try out The Garage, which is probably the absolute best way to achieve fitness out there.  This Friday morning (Christmas Eve – at 9am, we have an open Team Workout for anyone and everyone to try, it is a great non intimidating way to get involved); but the key is, be sure to get involved somewhere and somehow!  The  gym isn’t necessary, but something is; and so many people put their workout life on hold while getting busy for the holidays… priorities are priorities are priorities.  And your health is the most important thing you have. 

You would sacrifice anything you have to give, in order to get health.  Because in the end, all that really matters here on this earth, is based on your health.  Your ability to help, serve and give is based on your ability to do it.  Love is the only thing you can continue to give freely while your health is undermined, but it is perhaps the hardest thing to give consistently when faced with a health battle.  Keep your priorities, as priorities.

Lastly, a reminder to love.  It is so easy to be ten years old again in your heart, and just be overjoyed and loving.  Don’t let any of this “stuff”, whether you are managing it positively or negatively, become a deterrent to love!  God Bless, enjoy the rest of the week!

PREVENTION – Are You Sure?

Prevention is an interesting term. Most people would agree it’s a good thing.  If someone says, “take an asprin a day to prevent  heart attacks by 50%,” that sounds good.

“Get a mammogram to prevent dying from breast cancer”.  People do it.  Besides, who wants to die from something that’s preventable? No one!

But, how do you prove you prevented a disease? Ah, there’s the rub. It turns out that its not a very scientific process.

Say someone gets the flu shot for 20 years and never gets the flu. They may say “the flu shot prevented it”. Take another person who, for 20 years never got a flu shot, but also didn’t get the flu. Surely they came into contact with a flu virus several times over 20 years. Their body’s systems were strong enough to deal with a little flu virus. Back to the other person. How do they know that their body, not the vaccine,  didn’t fight off the virus? They don’t. They can only have faith.  There is no feasible way to prove it. What if the person who gets the shot, gets the flu also? They are told that it wasn’t the flu because the vaccine can’t cause the flu. It must be influenza-like illness. What if the same scenario happens in the person who doesn’t get the flu shot? They are told they should have gotten the flu shot.

Take heart attacks for example: 2 million Americans lay down on the catheterization table every year.  About 800,000 are in the throes of a heart attack, which would be the ones to generally benefit the most from bypass or stent. But, Dr. Richard Lange, chief of clinical cardiology at Johns Hopkins Medicine says, “Angioplasty and stenting have never been shown to improve survival. You can stent until the cows come home and not prevent a heart attack.” Veterans Affairs study released in the New England journal of Medicine backed him up. Angioplasties and stents have skyrocketed over the past 10 to 15 years yet there has been no change in the rate of heart attacks.

Dr. Nortin Hadler, professor of Medicine at UNC at Chapel Hill, put it this way “There are only two reasons you’d ever want to do it (bypass surgery): one, to save lives, the other to improve symptoms. But there’s only one subset of the population that’s been proved to derive a meaningful benefit from the surgery, and that’s people with a critical defect of the left main coronary artery who also have angina.(chest pain) If you take 100 60-year-old men with angina, only 3 of them will have that defect, and there’s no way to know without a coronary arteriogram. So you give that test to 100 people to find 3 solid candidates—but that procedure is not without complications. Chances are you’re going to do harm to at least one in that sample of 100. So you have to say, “I’m going to do this procedure with a 1 percent risk of catastrophe to find the 3 percent I know I can help a little.” That’s a very interesting trade-off.” And this is for Angina, not heart attack prevention which hasn’t been proven.

In a controlled trial of cardiac surgery for angina, half of the patients received bypass surgery while the other half only received a skin incision and stitches. The number of people in each group who had significant symptom relief was the same for each group.

So why do so many people submit to these procedures and why do so many doctors do them in spite of the lack of scientific evidence that it saves lives? Believers? Ideology? Faith?

There a lot of people walking around having survived these types of surgeries. The cardiac doctors have gotten better at rerouting blood flow in the heart without killing as many people on the table. But the assumed result, less deadly heart attacks, hasn’t happened. There isn’t 2 million less heart attacks per year.

An aspirin a day? Do you know the evidence? If you have already had your first heart attack your 5-year survival rate is 96%. If you take an aspirin a day the average survival rate goes to 98%. 2%  increase doesn’t sound impressive. But if you reverse the numbers and use mortality rates of 4% and 2%  then the American Heart Association can say there is a 50% reduction in deaths by taking an aspirin a day. That’s equivalent to proudly proclaiming that you have doubled your chances of winning the lottery because you bought 2 tickets instead of one. Not too many people I know would be excited about their chances. How many side effects would you expect for taking an aspirin a day for 5 years. Stroke anyone? There is zero evidence that shows taking an aspirin a day will prevent a first heart attack.

Cholesterol medicine. All I have to say is:  read the package insert. It says “has not been proven to prevent heart attack or death.” Lipitor claims they are the only FDA approved cholesterol lowering drug proven to prevent heart attacks. If you keep reading it tells you “in men who currently have heart disease” which means men who have already had a heart attack. Even in this group the benefits are marginal. 25 men will have to take the medication to prevent 1 heart attack. The 24 others receive no benefit. For the ones who haven’t had a heart attack, these odds are even more slim, over 500 to 1.

The mind game that is being played is that every single person actively taking the medication believes the “1” is THEM.  But the science says this can’t be so. It actually says it’s most likely not so.

“I take my medicine to prevent XYX”

Really? Is that science or is that belief?

Take something away from this Christmas…

We obviously have no concern for politically correct.  I am a Christian, and as such will express that through my words, my actions and my office.  It is not the holidays to me, it is Christmas.  But what is Christmas?  I won’t give too much away because we will have a trivia next week and the winner will take away a free massage (not the subject of the title of this daily sprout). 

So it is a holiday, developed by man, as a means of celebrating Christ’s birth.  It is an interesting thing to think about it, because God did not tell us to celebrate this event, nor did the birth happen on December 25th or anywhere near it as far as records tell us.  So why?  Well just like Halloween is a “Christian Celebration” turned Pagan (which is why I “celebrate” at Halloween, to tell God I see the reality of supernatural)… Christmas is a Pagan Holiday turned Christian.  In the end, the observance of these “holidays” needs to be considered for what it is.  Man.

God did not ask for these, nor dictate them, and he surely wants nobody to worship anyone/anything other than Him, so as I celebrate this season, I am very cautious to consider its impact on my God… an altogether jealous God.  “…you shall not worship or serve them, for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God” – Exodus  20:5  I believe this passage means that God is jealous of the things that I would put first before Him.

Now before I make my point (it is coming) let me also offer that He has provided you with seven annual celebrations that He does want you to follow, and my family has been getting better and better at celebrating these, though they are mostly a day or two, not a month of celebrating.  So let’s get to this point.

If the holiday is made up by man, and it is our belief that He is the reason for the season, though God never told you to do this, then to truly show honor to Him with your time and celebration, you had better live out His wishes with your celebration.  And this is the MEAT of this sprout (sorry if you expected “health” in the sprout, but there is health at the end of this path).

I love Christmas, because I love the feeling I get when I picture Christ coming into the world.  I love the imagery of the celebration of Angels at His birth.  I am moved to tears at random moments, even more so now that I am often teaching my kids what the words of a Christmas song really mean.  I do Christmas in July, because I like celebrating the birth of Christ.  I don’t care that Santa Clause has pagan roots, he is not my pagan, he is a symbol of the season.  All of this, every last bit of it is of value to me for one reason.  Because God commanded love.  Love of each other, and love of Himself.

You see, Christ said the greatest commandment was love.  And I find that Christmas is an altogether exceptional reminder of love.  Last night we had our patient Christmas dinner, and I was absolutely in love with everyone there!  The celebration that comes with this season, is an awesome, relationship building, deepening love, type of celebration… IF YOU LET IT.

This is my belief.  If you celebrate Christmas at all, then you had better increase your love.  If you don’t, then you are taking man’s made up holiday, doing man’s thing, and not giving honor and glory to God.  But if you are letting this opportunity draw you closer and closer to God’s love, and then turning that on someone else, well you are taking away the most valuable thing you possibly could from this season.

Now, mind you, you don’t need a holiday to do this!  God didn’t say “Love each other at random times that you choose, based on random celebrations that you choose.”  He said love.  Meaning all the time.

I ask that you would fill your heart up with love this Christmas season, and be magnetic to the world around you.  I truly love you.  Yes you, the one reading this, even if I have no clue who you are… right now in this moment I am doing nothing but loving you.  If you need anything, ask me now!  : – )

Senate Bill 510 – FDA Food Safety Modernization Act

An interesting bill just passed, one that is designed to provide additional safety to the food supply in our country, and hopefully take deadly illness resulting from food supply down another notch.  It reads like an excellent step in the right direction for human kind.

Sad thing, is that it is easy to spin something in a summary, and the biggest concern for me, was that Monsanto was behind this in a big way; and anything that Monsanto is pushing, cannot be good!  So I decided to look deeper into this bill, and see what it really says.

First off, you will find that there are a lot of small farmers out there, lining up to complain about this bill.  As I was digging into more information on this bill, I kept seeing responses from senators and legislators along the lines of “The farmers are the ones who asked for this bill, this is going to help them.”  In addition, more than once I saw something like “farmers will still be able to sell raw milk, and corn off the back of a pickup truck”.

However, as I read into the bill, I realize that those farmers can have the right to sell those items taken away in an instant, based on a hunch.  In other words, if officials believe their is a “reasonable” probability that a food could cause harm, then they have the right to suspend the sale, or production of that food.  The interesting thing, is that it is illegal to sell raw milk in our state already, so if a farmer is selling it, they must label it as “for pet use only”.  According to this new law, it appears as though FDA officials would have the ability to stop the sale of milk to individuals if they could show a reasonable probability that the end user was a person instead of a pet.

It is bad enough that the government has imposed so many fear based rules, but this one is awful.  So I was trying to figure out where monsanto was seeing advantage out of this bill.  And there was one simple answer.  This bill will take foods off of shelves that have risk of bacterial contamination.  Monsanto has created genetically modified foods that can withstand the harshest pesticides.  They have a corn product that can literally be sprayed with “Round Up”, and not die.  It is easy to sell the government on how safe this is because these foods will never be contaminated with e-coli.  However, the questions that don’t get asked or answered, are the ones regarding the cancer risk of a so heavily sprayed food, or the possible long term effect on the colon if you put DNA modified foods into it.

It is a sad day for many organic farmers who know this will eventually cause more of their “risky” crops to  be discarded, forcing prices up further, and making it harder for the average American to afford organic foods.  At this time, I don’t have an action for you, it happened too fast.  So at this time, we simply need to wait, and pray that this won’t have an awful impact on us overnight.  Lastly, I encourage everyone of you to plant your own gardens and tend to them every year!  God Bless.

Detox through the feet?


There has been a great focus on detoxification in our office in the last few weeks.  With the toxic body testing, followed by a workshop designed to help you understand toxins and detoxification.  The Total Food Makeover, where we have had several lose 15+ pounds and MANY who have lost between 10 and 15 pounds (which creates a detoxification environment in the body).

Juice Plus week at HealthSprout

This is the week that I want to make sure we properly assess everyone’s nutritional needs, and that we insure if you are deficient, that we make some kind of step in the right direction.  So we’ll be handing out questionnaires and letting you self assess. 

The funny thing, is that this has been planned for some time, yet I never really thought about the implication of coming off of Thanksgiving.  You see, what I realized last week, is that I am dependent on my juice plus in order to get my 7-13 servings of fruits and vegetables.  For those of you who know the Healing Diet you realize that I don’t eat fruit like its going out of style (anymore), so I need to eat the veges.  Well last week, while on vacation, I ate 7+ servings on ONE day.

Normally I do much better than that, but when I become less INTENTIONAL about making sure I get what my body needs, I fell right off.  Which is likely where most of you are, way shy of what you should be getting.  I take another supplement too, which many of you take also (USANA Essentials).  But I believe the most important supplement on a day when you are short on your total fruit and vege servings, is Juice Plus.  This is because it IS fruit and veges, there is conflicting information on the internet about the equivalence of one serving of Juice Plus, but from what I have read, I would say that it is closely equivalent to four servings of fruits and veges.  With no sugar!

So we will be putting some samples out this week of the children’s supplement (my kids take this daily) as it is lower in sugar that most children’s vitamins (yes there is sugar in the children’s formula, though it isn’t actual white sugar).  The other great reason to let your kids take a taste of this supplement, is that you can get your children’s or grnadchildren’s supplement for FREE!
