Your Health Plan

We are in the middle of a Body By God Challenge right now, and honestly, it isn’t the MOST challenging test that we do, but what is great about it, is that it focuses a little on ALL aspects of health.  The reason why this is so important, is that everyone lacks health in some area.  Whether it be in your nervous system function (chiropractic), your diet, your exercise, your stress levels and peace, the overall cleanliness of your life, or perhaps your time… there is something lacking.

So by touching on every area, we really get to help direct people towards goals appropriate for where they are!  I love it.  So to take this step a little further, and in an attempt to engage all of you into the time and effort that we put forth outside of simply adjusting you.  We are going to ask for your feedback.

So here is where we are.  We are going to put out a poster board this week, and on that board
we will have columns that are labeled with different health goals for the year.  Lose up to 20 lbs, lose over 20 lbs, get off of a specific medication, try to not use any antibiotics in the year, increase exercise, improve strength, sleep more soundly, etc, etc, etc.  We will ask you to make check marks in the areas that are of greatest importance to you, and as we tally these scores up, they will help direct us throughout the year.

So, there are some specific instructions I would like to give you now.  We plan on keeping some areas blank, so that we can write in areas of interest as time goes on, but the more you can help us up front, the better.

So, with that in mind, if you have specific areas that you are focusing on that would relate to your health, then let us know up front.  One somewhat unique area that we plan on delving into, is gardening.  With the looming fear of escalating food prices, and the general desire to grow food yourselves in order to keep it organic, this seems like a great time to focus on your growing skills and capacity.

In addition, I have had more people focusing on detoxification in the past year than every before, but detoxification is an all encompasing term, when in reality the focus might be on helping restore intestinal function, neurological function, kidney or liver function, or perhaps it is everything.  Let us know if you have come to some decision to specifically work on one area.

Goals are an interesting thing, they come and go, we get excited and we lose excitement.  One moment we can be working so hard towards something so important, and the next we’re sitting on the couch watching TV.  In my experience, we often fail to achieve, because we failed to have a good plan.  IF we can help give you the good plan, then we will focus on helping you get the goal!

SuperBowl MVP has been adjusted since birth…

Kind of a cool, and overlooked stat, is that the SuperBowl MVP, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, has been adjusted his entire life.  Yep, Aaron’s father, Ed Rogers, is a Chiropractor in Chico, CA, and has provided his son with chiropractic care, and the chiropractic lifestyle since he was born!

Its kind of cool, looking at the athlete who has gained the most media exposure in the last month, and will have incredible opportunity handed to him over the next year to lead and direct people.  And to know that he grew up in a principled chiropractor’s family.  You can google Aaron Rodgers and chiropractic, and come up with an incredible list of documents.  So sifting through them, I was able to ascertain that Aaron has been adjusted forever, and that his father lives a life like I do in that he beleives in natural healing and no drugs.

I couldn’t say for sure, though I found the claim that Aaron had never had a vaccine, and has never been on a prescription.  I would believe it, but I couldn’t verify it.  All I know, is that by being under a lifetime of chiropractic care, his immune system is stronger, his nervous system is more adept, and his chances at a balanced body are optimal.

I see this in my girls.  They aren’t the most physically able, that part is both a gift, and a product.  The gift is in the DNA and the potential there, the product is in the endless hours of work to build the machine.  So of course my girls aren’t showing that!  But what I do see in them, is the change from nervous systems that were only learning, to nervous systems that have learned, with immune systems that have become incredibly able.  So what I am saying is that I have seen how TIME in this lifestyle makes a HUGE difference.

So isn’t it just right, that Aaron has gained so much, and lived so clean to get it.  It happens thousands of times a day around our country, where people are told that they will do better, be better, and live better with an unnatural solution.  I have had ten patients this week alone tell me about antibiotics that they were taking.  The pressure is incredible.

And just a reminder, I have referenced antibiotic cancer risk studies such as this one published in JAMA, and though in the moment you feel like you are dying.  If you are taking an antibiotic, you are becoming like the stat in the study.  It is not someone else I am talking about when we cite these studies, we are talking about YOU!  The people we see everyday.  It is you whom we care about, and you whom we write these for.  We educate you, so that you can be the healthiest you!!

Chiropractic and Quality of Life

There have been some great studies over the years on Chiropractic and Quality of Life.  I stumbled across this reference, and thought about the simple approach to health that we take in the chiropractic health model, and how that simple approach is still the absolute most effective.

“A study published in The Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research in August 2004 shows that a healthy spinal column can improve posture, reduce stress and increases range of motion when performing various exercises. People who undergo regular chiropractic treatment sessions may also take better care of themselves by exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and making healthy nutritional choices that also improve the quality of life (Source: ChiropracticResearch.org).  Here’s a close look at some of the key benefits of regular chiropractic treatment:


1. Natural way to reduce stress. Chiropractic treatments can help to improve nervous system functioning which in turn helps minimize the effects of stress. When someone is suffering from poor nerve function, stress buildup can be significant enough to trigger migraines, headaches, joint pain and extreme anxiety.  Sustained stress on the nervous system leads to hormonal dysregulation, immuno-compromise and secondary diseases such as cancer.
 
2. Improves posture. A better posture encourages better breathing patterns which helps keep the energy flowing throughout the body. Better posture also minimizes the risk of upper and lower back pain, joint problems and fatigue.  In addition, there are numerous studies linking postural degeneration to heart disease, and degenerative conditions of the spinal cord.  Together, these effects will improve quality of life.

This reduces the chances that someone will maintain a sedentary lifestyle, and regular exercise or physical activity can improve quality of life overall.
 
4. Promotes natural healing. One of the most significant outcomes of chiropractic treatment is that the body can begin to restore itself naturally. An impaired nervous system often leads to injury and damage to the tissues and joints. Any type of spinal misalignment can contribute to the deterioration of the body, so chiropractic adjustments reduce this risk and promote the natural healing process. This means that a patient may not need to resort to prescription drugs and medication just to feel better, thereby improving their quality of life.
 
5. Reduces blood pressure. Improved nervous system functioning can improve blood and energy flow throughout the body, which in turn can reduce blood pressure. High blood pressure can contribute to a number of health problems and diseases, and may be difficult to control as the patient ages. Regular chiropractic treatments can reduce blood pressure naturally, which means the patient may not need to resort to medication in order to improve their health.

So as I said in the beginning, the simple approach is what makes sense.  And we will continue to teach chiropractic for its life giving qualities, the improvement on healing and immune system capacity.

The Metametrix website is fantastic!

 You don’t need to read piles of medical literature, you don’t need to sift through endless articles in your local papers, or read all of my toxin based Daily Sprouts.  You just need to spend some time at this website!  The Metametrix Toxic Effects Website gives you an incredible resource at your finger tips, every single day.  This website is a perfect interactive learning environment.

Its goal is simply to make you aware of how toxic your environment is.  The ease of use is what makes this site so awesome.  You simply click on any one area of the house: The Garage, The Laundry Room, The Kitchen, The Bathroom, The Bedroom, The Living Room, and the Outdoors.  The area is then expanded with a list of chemicals below the image.  You can click on each of the chemicals, and the products of concern are highlighted in the image.

In addition, you can scroll along looking at the different icons in the picture, and they will give you more details about what makes them toxic.  It is a great reminder to everyone, that we live in a toxic world, and that those toxins have seriously negative effects, and the greatest of these is cancer, and it is likely the most common response to toxic overload.  So figure out how to remove these toxins from your life, and figure it out now!

In our world, we believe that detoxification is a NECESSARY step for everyone.  If you are reading this, and the only thought that comes to mind when I say detoxification, is “cost”.  Then your priorities need to be assessed… because the only thing that I can guarantee you about cancer, is COST.  If you are not actively pursuing a heavy metal detox two times a year, then you are missing out on a very important step towards health.  Again, pay attention to the distinction here, heavy metal detox (toxic metal), vs. colon cleanse.  These are NOT one in the same.

If you aren’t sure how to do this, then pay attention to the posters that will be coming out shortly to announce the next round of heavy metal testing and detox class.  It is a great education, and will clearly help you step towards a healthier and more cancer free you!

Stop Monkeying Around!

Stress It’s all around us, but what does it do to us? Consider this… the macaque monkeys: when you put them in a cage they establish a dominance hierarchy, a sort of caste system. The dominant monkeys will slightly harass the less dominant monkeys.

Macaques with less power and control are in a state of chronic stress. The evidence is in their stress hormone levels.They have higher levels of cortisol circulating in their blood. It’s the same chemical that is released in human beings in response to stress. And when it is sustained at high levels it starts having negative effects on cellular function and tissues.

When scientist looked into the hearts of the macaques they can see the damage of chronic stress. What they found was massive plaques in the subordinate monkeys and almost none in the monkeys who had control. Fifty percent blockage in the subordinates, even though they were eating the same diet! What is amazing to me is ALL the monkeys were caged, a stressfull situation for anyone. The difference was a PERCEPTION of control or hoplessness.

Scientist, Sheldon Cohen from Carnegie Mellon University, wanted to know if this applies to humans.Then Cohen wanted to test the effect of stress on our bodies. His focus: our immune system. “Basically we brought healthy people in and we exposed them to a virus. We actually do this by putting a drop in their nostrils that has a cold virus in it. Cohen’s finding? Those with less chronic stress caught fewer colds than those with more stress. While a cold virus may seem minor, it could signal more serious health problems.” The cold study is a paradigm we can use that allows us to see how effectively the immune system is operating, which has implications for not only colds and other infectious diseases, but autoimmune diseases and some kinds of cancers.

Folks, this is serious scientific proof that the mind, the spirit, and the nervous system affects what happens to your life. Take care of it.

Love… Love… Love!

Oh Valentine’s Day… such a lovely day to show some love.  So why write about it two days late?  Because I want to see how much love you can share AFTER the fact!  I for one, am going to try to surprise my wife today (as long as she doesn’t read this post first)!

So the book, The Love Dare, which was showcased in the movie Fireproof, is a great book.  40 Days of great things to do for your spouse, ways to demonstrate your love and to build upon it. So here we are, two days after Valentine’s day, probably not the biggest deal in most of our lives… just another day.  But what if… what if this day we made a greater attempt at showing love, first to our spouses, then perhaps everyone around us?  Man, that would be pretty cool… and slightly unexpected too!

There is a very significant thing that happens to our bodies when we live in love.  The physiological effect is incredible, and it reduces your risk of heart disease, and cancer; it opens you up for greater healing and deeper sleep.  In the end, it just might be the greatest thing that you could ever do for your health.  So I propose that you make that extra phone call today, grab a flower to give, prepare the house a little nicer for when your spouse comes home… who knows?  Why not build on the trend of Monday (did you catch that little plant there, I called it a trend) and continue on today!

You know it is a great thing that we get to have a “holiday” that drives us to treat our spouse a little better than most days, but what would really be great, would be to do it everyday!  Enjoy today and God Bless!

Celery – ORGANIC or none

There are many of you who will never come to a total food makeover, or a Body By God Challenge which makes it pretty hard for me to tell you as much as I would like about healthy eating, but as we leak little tidbits to you, I realize there is one area that we haven’t shared in a while… the SERIOUS nature of the Dirty Dozen!

The dirty dozen is a list compiled by The Environmental Working Group of the twelve most important foods to eat organic.  Topping this list is celery, followed by peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, kale, cherries, potatoes, grapes (imported).  In this list there are some foods that are still very difficult to find organic (I have only found organic kale at Harry’s), or very expensive to find organic (all of the fruit on this list except for apples carry a significant premium).

However, celery, is neither of those.  It is both easy, and cheap to find organic celery, and it is the WORST offender.  What if you simply wash your non-organic celery?  Well, what is ON the foods is not the issue, the problem is what is IN the foods!  The root system is the most important aspect of how these foods are contaminated. 

Celery has one of the most adept systems of xylem and phloem out there (the transport system that moves food up and down trunks of trees and plants), allowing it to very easily absorb any pesticide in the ground, and transport it throughout the plant.  It really is a perfect means of delivering ground poison into your body!

So next time you are out eating chicken wings (which done correctly are perfectly fine for the healing diet), DO NOT eat the celery!  Unless of course you can guarantee it is organic!  Hope this helps you on your pursuit of health, God Bless!
