Organic Products are being pushed to the market

Our Total Food Makeover people have heard a bit about the Beyond Organic organization that Jordan Rubin started.  Others may have seen some of the product information as it has been sitting on our counter tops.  The point is, there has been some buzz, and for good reason!

Read this excerpt from an email I recently received from Jordan Rubin:

At Beyond Organic, we know how important it is to keep you connected to the land and all of our projects at our ranches and spring. So much of the attention around launch has been focused on products, and policies, and websites—all important and necessary information. But today, we provide you with a Ranch Update—as we have some very exciting things happening at Beyond Organic.

We have welcomed over 400 calves into the world and they are beautiful and healthy. This is the first generation of our new breeding program and God has blessed us tremendously.

A team of soil scientists recently tested the nutrient levels of our grasses, legumes, forbs and herbs and they had to check their instruments several times as they could not believe the improvements. We have been very diligent in our regenerative soil programs to bolster our micro and macro organisms and the results are tremendous.

We believe that next years pastures are going to explode! God’s plan for sustainable regenerative agriculture is nothing short of amazing!!

If that doesn’t sum up a pretty amazing attempt at health driven foods, I am not sure what does.  This is exciting stuff.  In addition, they are selling grass fed beef in small quantities, to allow those who don’t get in on our beef purchases, to buy very small quantities if you choose, which are better than grocery store quality grass fed.  What is the ‘grass-fed’ designation?  It is great, yet hard to trust at the same time.    Why?  Read this from Mark’s Daily Apple:

To say grass-fed cows eat grass isn’t telling the entire story. It’s more accurate to say they eat graminoids, which comprise hundreds of different species of sedges (found in wild marshes and grasslands; a famous sedge includes papyrus), rushes (a small but plucky family of herbaceous and rhizomatous plants), and true grasses (cereals, lawn grass, bamboo, grassland grass – the type of grass that produces the leaves Walt Whitman writes about). And that’s just the graminoid. Cows will also nibble on shrubs, clovers, and random leaves if they can get to them. Basically, they’ll eat whatever’s in reach, green, and leafy. Legally, grass-fed cows may also eat cereal grain crops in the “pre-grain stage,” hay, silage, and non-grain crop byproducts (one of my favorite farms gives their cows leftover veggies, for example, and it’s fantastic; that would qualify).

There’s yet another hazy category: the pasture-raised cow. These guys get steady lifelong access to open pastures, but those pastures are supplemented with feed bins containing grain feed. Not technically grass-fed, but not quite sucking down gumdrops like Grandma. Purveyors of pastured cattle who include grain in the feed are usually pretty conscientious stewards of their operation, and I’ve had great meat from cows that were fed grass and grainconcurrently.

Basically, I don’t like the idea of buying “Grass-Fed” from the grocery store, because legally this beef could have a significant amount of omega 6 fatty acid vs the healthy omega 3, conjugate linoleic acid of a true green fed cow.  I know that the beef we buy from Indian Creek Angus is green fed the whole way, from the first time they are weened from mom’s milk, to the point that they are brought to the processor.  The same applies to Beyond Organic.  Which is really good to know for certain!  Why pay up to $23/lb for a “grass fed” filet at Whole Foods that might have actually spent its last 90 days eating nothing but grain?  Not so good.

So join me in the mission towards green fed, and towards the mission of organic.  Why organic you might still be asking?  Well, I really, really advise you to get into our workshops (this Monday at 11:45am – How to Reverse Diabetes), and start learning more about this need.  Recent literature in the oncology world continues to suggest that 95% of cancer origin is based in environmental factors, meaning that you can change up to 95% of your cancer risk based on your choices.  Now, to believe we could actually change 95% of it, is probably a bit excessive, but perhaps 80% is within your grasp… that would be important enough!

Candy to Troops!

It is not good for you.  It is bad for you.  It is actually somewhat deadly for you.  So I have had about four pieces of candy.  I hate the “candy” stuff.  But the chocolate… you know how you have these memories from your childhood, eating Snickers, drinking soda (pop where I come from).  Hard to deny those desires to have a little nostalgia.  But it is all coming to an end quick.  One more and I think I am done for another year.

Some of you are shocked I am sure.  “Oh my, how could you!?”  Well, it is easy.  Listen to me speak to you, nobody is perfect, nor should they hold themselves out to be.  That is me too!!  I will tell you that you should never have a trans fat… though I just did.  And that you should never have high fructose corn syrup… however… check!

You see, even though the truth is you should never.  None of these are God’s laws, and I would first say you should follow all of those… yet I think I lied to my daughter Ansley today.  We were mentioning Christmas, and I held out the notion that Santa Clause is real.  So you might think that is ok, right.  No harm.  Well, it is actually a lie, to a person, which is a direct violation of God’s law.  So honestly, I think that is worse than eating the piece of candy.  But what if I keep eating the candy?

You see, everything in moderation is wrong.  Though everything bad in very, very low moderation is acceptable.  The bar must be drawn to understand what acceptable moderation is.  Is it Chick-fil-A once a week, or once a year?  You see I don’t ever eat there, or McDonald’s, or Burger King, etc.  You might say, well wait a minute, if you eat a candy bar, then why not eat at McDonald’s.  And the answer is a simple two part answer, 1. Because McDonald’s does not offer a taste that is a unique nostalgia, a moment of memory and awesomeness all at once (where to me a Snickers does), and 2. Because I have evidence that McDonald’s has actually tried to seduce children into their fold with their marketing efforts, where I have not seen that from the Mars Candy Company.

So what about NOW though?  Let’s get back to this.  We are two days after, and the candy bag is huge (my kids had none on Tuesday by the way).  What to do?  Well, at my house, we are going to select a few more pieces each (which will be consumed by the kids over the next two weeks or never perhaps), then donate the rest to the troops (you can do that at my office right now).  Sending candy to be divided up by more than a platoon of troops, is awesome.  They’ll get a few pieces each, and that is it.  No real damage, yet the feeling of love.

If you or your family, continued to eat candy every day or so, until the whole bag was gone, well… you had better come to my reversing diabetes talk next Monday at 11:45am.  You are going to need it.

So please, bring your candy in, and we’ll turn it into the US Marines overseas who are seeing active duty in possible combat situations, and we will send a note saying we love them.  In addition, if you choose to join the Pantry Diaries, I will ask you to donate some bad food from your pantry.  That food, which I don’t want you to eat, can possibly sustain someone who is starving, and we will give it to a local food pantry for the homeless.  So please, sign up now!  And thanks for not judging me too harshly for the couple fun size candy bars!

Oh yeah, what is up with calling them fun size?  Maybe they do have a kid marketing campaign worth avoiding!

Chiropractic Finds its roots!

There have been more internal battles in chiropractic over the last thirty years, than any other profession that I am aware of.  Granted, there have been no internal strikes, but we aren’t set up for that.  There have however, been many chiropractors who have come into the profession, not because of a love for the profession.  But rather from a desire to have the “doctor” title, or because they read that it was a growing profession, or perhaps some other reason.  Many of the chiropractors who join the profession with this kind of motivation, do not appreciate the philosophical position that the profession was founded on.

Let’s go back and review.  DD Palmer discovered chiropractic (we use discovered because we don’t believe a man invented it, but rather this was from God… laying hands to heal was and is the method of choice from a Biblical perspective), in 1895 in Davenport Iowa when he adjusted Harvey Lillard and restored hearing.  This began the start of a very vitalistic approach to health of chiropractic, and was expanded upon by BJ Palmer (son of DD) through his lifetime.  This approach is the one that we use to govern our treatment philosophy.  Basically, you are an amazing and magnificent creation with vital life forces flowing through your nervous system.  To truly measure those signals is impossible, and to try to quantify life forces is an endeavor that will fail miserably as their are inexplicable intricacies to life that will remain illusive.  The goal of care then, is not to guarantee a specific outcome, but rather support bringing the body back to its normal function.  If that means greater symptoms, then it is a proper endeavor.

DD Palmer

This is in stark contrast to the mechanistic philosophy that has governed medical practice for years (though recently there has been large groups of MD’s who are departing from this philosophy).  The growth of animal science as it relates to quantum physics has been a contributor in the growing number of questions of this philosophy.  The sad thing, is that in chiropractic, their has been a division for years, that is based on this difference.  Many chiropractors who have come into the profession (as stated above), have sought after mainstream acceptance.  In many cases it is because of the desire to be more financially successful, thus insurance acceptance has been a goal, along with hoping to come alongside MD’s and receive referrals.

In other cases, it is common to see chiropractors working with MD’s these days.  Though from the outside, that might seem like a very promising idea to many of you.  However, if we dig in and consider the implication, you will realize that it is probably not the best situation for you, them or the profession.  The number one reason according to industry surveys for MD/DC clinics is to allow for greater insurance billings for the DC (if MD’s refer and prescribe specific treatments, then bill those treatments under their license, those treatments will receive higher insurance reimbursement, than in a DC office).  This has come under great scrutiny, and their have been massive insurance penalties levied on some of these practices (not good for anyone).

In addition, most of these DC’s do not maintain as one of their practice goals the desire to get their patients off of medications (makes sense).  So are there any of you reading this who would prefer to take medication over being free of them?  So then who is to help lead you?  If one your goals would be to live a life as free from meds as possible, then you probably want someone leading you that way.  If all the effort from your health care providers is to treat with meds, then you WILL end up on them.  We have learned this all too often, from the most conservative anti-med people around, who have ended up taking them.  It’s part of leadership towards health.

OK, let’s keep going on this path.  Have any of you ever been adjusted by an Osteopath?  I know some of you have, as we have talked about it.  The DO designation started as a license to treat disease through manipulation of joints of the body, to improve blood flow and restore circulation.  Many osteopaths were much like the chiropractors of today though.  Complaining about low volume practices, wanting greater involvement in the insurance reimbursement world, these doctors have gone the way of the MD, choosing to prescribe medication instead of manipulate (they have been trained in full medical practice, and awarded an MD degree benefit along with their DO degree).  Now it is hard to find a practitioner who manipulates, as most examine, diagnose and prescribe medications as their usual office protocol.

So, where are these roots in chiropractic?  Well, one of the greatest chiropractic accomplishments of the recent past has been the explosive growth of practices in Maximized Living.  There are more patient visits that happen in these offices, than in the offices of ten times the number of other chiropractic offices.  Which means that much more influence towards healthy lifestyle, corrective focus of care, an understanding of the value of lifetime care, and a bent towards natural health and clean living.  The model is one that helps to rescue the insurance problem that exists in our country, while rescuing from the chronic disease problem as well.

In the last few weeks I have had several cool testimonials come out, from a man in his sixties telling me that his balance has improved dramatically, to another telling me that he has been able to eat spicy foods again without heartburn, to another telling me that their daily headaches have stopped, and lastly another who fought through the flu in 2 days, which their immune system has never been able to do.  Chiropractic has found its roots!

“My disc healed on a nerve”

My wife heard this comment at her gym Wednesday night… she goes to Lifetime for kickboxing, and CrossFit with me.  This was Lifetime.  She was sitting near one of our neighbors after class, and the person commented to someone else that her “disc healed on a nerve”.

“Healed on a nerve?” her friend said.

“Yes, my doctor said that it healed after they injected it with junk, and it is now healed on the nerve”.

“What are they going to do?”

“Need to go in now I guess.  I don’t want to, but they aren’t giving me many options.”

I need to make some comments on this topic.  This is really a sad situation of poor understanding of how the body works, but it is because of a doctor poorly educating a patient.  I can think of one really good reason why, it removes accountability from the doctor, and puts it all on the patient.  First off, true healing is not healing with disease.  True healing occurs when you heal to your natural state.  A disc (protruded, herniated, etc) does not “heal” onto your nerve.  It is still a clinical condition, it is still diseased and sick, it is not healed.

So why did this doctor use this terminology?  He was injecting a steroid very likely, into her disc to reduce inflammation, and the “healing” terminology was used because it is easy to help a patient get around the idea of healing.  The reality, is that all the steroid is doing is reducing inflammation, and healing is the thing that your body is doing on its own, under the control of the nervous system, however the nervous system is compromised by the disc pushing on the nerve, so it cannot heal.

You see, the important point of this discussion is that healing cannot occur without a clear signal from that nerve that is being compressed by the disc.  So what do you do in this situation?  Well, decompression is the necessary step.  You need to try to remove the pressure from the nerve, and in that process gain healing of the disc.  There is probably a 50/50 chance that she could be healed fully, if she does the right thing.

The conversation of the two women was preceded with a “My back is killing me comment, I shouldn’t be doing this class… but as long as I don’t do kicks I should be ok”.  When in reality, she shouldn’t be doing any kind of twisting rotating motions with a disc that is protruded or herniated, and symptomatic.  They should be focused on activities that will allow for healing to occur.  Once again, misinformation has led her to believe she can continue without worsening the condition, when in reality, everything that she is doing is worsening her condition.

When you have the sensation of nerve pain, it is a sign that you have really put a significant amount of pressure on your nerve.  It isn’t an insignificant problem at all.  Nerve pressure comes without pain first and foremost, then it slowly develops into pain.  When you feel it shooting down your leg, there is a significant amount of pressure, and it might be disc related.  I know spending extra money isn’t anyone’s favorite pasttime, but if you have nerve pressure, then you should consider talking to us about trying decompression, and considering what other activities you should avoid.

I hope that helps you gain a little better understanding of your discs and healing.  Be well, enjoy the weekend, Dr. E

Dr. Mercola hits home on Healing Diet promotion and Babies!

Please be sure to go online and watch this Halloween Candy video produced by Maximized Living, featuring Kim Roberto from West Cobb Chiropractic.

Now – the Mercola article!

There are many reasons why breastfeeding is a superior option to formula feeding for babies, however, a new study provides one of the most compelling to date.

Infant formulas are typically processed under high heat, and this leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGES).

AGES are sugar molecules that attach to and damage proteins in your body.

Not only do they build up in your body over time, leading to oxidation and speeding up the aging process, but they also lead to inflammation, which in turn is linked to a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.

AGES Double in Infants Switched From Breast milk to Formula

If you’re a breastfeeding mom who needs encouragement to continue nursing for one year or beyond, consider this fact: when infants were switched from breast milk to commercial formula within the first year of life, their levels of AGEs doubled to levels found in people with diabetes.

Many of the infants also had elevated insulin levels, which may be directly attributable to the AGEs in the infant formula.

While a woman’s blood level of AGEs does impact her newborn’s levels (the researchers found newborns’ blood levels of AGEs were nearly as high as that of their mother’s, which is yet another why pregnant women should cut back on their processed food intake), her breast milk is still a superior source of nutrition. Infant formulas processed with high heat may have 100 times more AGEs than breast milk.

As a result, formula-fed babies are being exposed to unacceptably high levels of these toxins, putting their health at risk — completely unbeknownst to most parents!

Why Exposing Your Baby to High Levels of AGEs Could be Tragic …

Glycation is a process in which the sugar in food bonds with proteins and forms so-called ‘advanced glycation end products’, or AGEs. It’s a fitting acronym because – along with oxidation – it’s one of the major molecular mechanisms whereby damage accrues in your body, which leads to disease, aging, and premature death.

When sugar is glycated, it contributes to inflammation, which activates your immune system defensively.  Macrophages are scavenger cells that are part of your immune defense system, and as such they have special receptors for AGEs, aptly called RAGEs (think: raging inflammation). These RAGEs bind to the AGEs and get rid of them.

Unfortunately, this process can leave its fair share of battle scars. Inside your arteries, for example, the scar tissue created from this process is called plaque. This also explains why there’s such a strong connection between diabetes and heart disease, and why infants exposed to high levels of AGEs in infant formula may have had elevated insulin levels.

To avoid AGEs in your diet, you need to pay attention to avoiding foods cooked at high heat, including processed and pasteurized foods like infant formula.

In July 2011, the first study in humans showing that AGEs promote insulin resistance and diabetes was published. People with diabetes who ate an AGE-restricted diet (this included foods that were poached or stewed instead of cooked at high heat, such as grilling, frying or broiling) had a 35 percent decrease in insulin levels, to give you an idea of just how great an impact appropriate dietary changes can have on your, or your child’s, health.

Oh the Majesty of it all!

When was the last time you saw the full night sky?  Friday night, around 11pm, as I was paddling along Lake Barkley with my headlamp off in order to have the best view of the night sky.  We would occasionally drift of course because we were so consumed by the stars that we failed to pay attention to which way we were going.  One of my teammates witnessed seven shooting stars… I only saw four.

What was amazing, is that two of them burned so long into our atmosphere, that you could call out “Look at that” and anyone in the vicinity could have looked up with plenty of time to still see an amazing trail of fire through the sky.  With a blue green hue behind one, and a red orange hue behind the other.  I mentioned God was displaying His fireworks for us.  It was awesome.

And it is truly amazing to think about the awesomeness of “out there”.  But honestly, you carry an equal awesomeness “in here”.  Your body.

This is going to be short and sweet, I just don’t want to try to add too much, thus take away from simple majesty.  Your body is such an amazing creation.  The healing that it goes through daily is unfathomable.  I really mean that, you are organizing new cells into perfectly matched tissue all the time.  This should almost seem impossible in our view of intelligence.  Our intellect view sees intelligence in larger beings, not single cells.  So when we see the intelligence being exhibited through a cell, it really doesn’t make sense.

Until we realize that the intelligence is being imparted to that cell from the brain.  Though every cell goes through an intelligent adaptation and healing.  It is through the intelligence of the brain that this happens.  So now you need to get the BIGNESS of 75 trillion cells, under the control of your brain.  Once again, unfathomable.

So I would challenge you to get out to the North GA mountains very soon, do it so that you are there in the evening.  Get to a lake, one with no homes on it, and sit by the waters edge staring into the sky.  You could get stuck there.  The Milky Way was so incredibly obvious, every constellation was obvious and easy to see.

I love watching Louie Giglio speak on the Universe.  You should check it out!
