ICYMI (if you’re not up to date with your internet lingo this means “In Case You Missed It.”)

We posted this article on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HealthSprout1) awhile back. If you haven’t already you should go ahead and like our page to make sure you don’t miss posts like this, and to keep up with any other news we have to share, such as our Saturday hours which can change week to week.

About the article:

The main premise is sharing results of studies that show chiropractic care and exercise are more effective than traditional medicine’s (drugs) approach to dealing with pain, specifically in this instance neck pain.

According to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and funded by the National Institutes of Health, medication is not the best option for treating neck pain.

After following 272 neck-pain patients for 12 weeks, those who used a chiropractor or exercise were more than twice as likely to be pain free compared to those who took medication.

This isn’t really “news” to us. We as chiropractors know this all too well, but it is always nice to see it come out with solid evidence to back it up. While we know this, you may have not heard it much from us. In fact I’m sure, if you’ve spent any amount of time in our office, you’ve heard someone in the office exclaim “I Don’t Care About Your Pain!” As much as this is true in the WHY we adjust you, it is not completely true. We do care about your pain, and we are happy when you get relief from our care, especially when you’ve chosen to trust us and not go the drug route. The reason you’ll hear that phrase is because we (you and us) need to make sure the pain does not become the focus of WHY we adjust you.

I understand it can be very easy to fall into that trap, of symptom based care. I know getting adjusted can feel great, and you typically feel great after, and you will usually have relief. I like that part of what we do. I love hearing people say they are feeling better. It can be just as easy for me to get into that world of pain relief when I’m hearing how good people are feeling every day and when articles like this one come out and have proof that we are effective at relieving pain. But it is so very important to maintain focus on the real WHY, the nervous system function. I like that the author of this article does point that out.

Due to their comprehensive training in musculoskeletal management, numerous sources of evidence have shown that chiropractic management is much safer and often more effective than allopathic medical treatments, particularly for back and neck pain. In addition, researchers have also found that chiropractic adjustments affect our bodies on a deep cellular level.

What that means is that chiropractic care may affect the basic physiological processes that influence oxidative stress and DNA repair, so in addition to addressing any immediate spinal misalignment that might cause pain, it can also address deeper dysfunction in your body.

And that is the real purpose for our adjustments. Yes its awesome to help people relieve their pain, but it is so much better helping you pursue health from within! Get your power turned on!

God Bless – Dr. Mark.

Transform 30

So the 60 Day Turnaround is difficult in many people’s minds.  Be led through a 2 month period of no grains, no legumes, no root vegetables, no sugars (natural or otherwise – this includes honey, agave, maple syrup, etc), and no fruit besides a handful of berries or a granny smith apple.    Dang it man, why are you hurting me so bad… let me at least have a banana!

So in lieu of jumping into the 60 Day, which is still my strongest recommendation.  I have a solution for you.  The Transform 30.  This is a program that is sponsored by Juice Plus, and it is a great start to getting you on a path towards dietary wellness, but it doesn’t require that you give up all that you hold dear.  Will you loose weight if you want, yep.  Will you gain more healing potential and reduce inflammation?  Yep.

I will be leading a discussion/workshop on Friday January 15th starting at 11:15am.  So, even though I am finishing up adjustments until 11:30, we will have some samples and some pre-workshop discussion going on to prep you for the details.

Health Sprout T30

I will bring you the directions for 30 Days of success without the difficulty of the 60 Day.

The great thing, is that with a start date of February 4th for the Transform 30, I have a planned transition into the 60 Day for anyone who wants to give it a go for March 4th.  This simple transition will let you jump into the end of the 60 Day, with all of the activities that we have planned for them.   So look at this like it is your time to shine.

Reading this online and want to know how to do all of this from afar?  You don’t need to be here for ANY of it.  So the method is to follow the guideline and stay connected via the online group.  The Transform 30 has no commitment to workshops or meetings.  One time, getting the details, is all you need to jump start your health.  Just post a comment here and we will be sure to grab your hand on this journey.

Reduce inflammation, increase nutritional density, find balance in your body and be charged up for a better year in health.

Be well and Be blessed!  I hope to see all of you next Friday the 15th at 11:15am in our office at 8256 Main Street!

7 Steps to Start 2016 Off Right

The Healthy Way!  The 60 Day Turnaround Way!  The following is not for the weak of heart… you will feel attacked if not empowered.  Your choice, be attacked or be empowered.  PERIOD.

1. Throw out the Sugar Now

It is easy to get caught up in the sugar.  I don’t care what it is, but if you are ready, here on January 4th, to take the right steps, then you need to prove to yourself that you are in charge.  Those who read this and don’t act, have only proven one thing.  You do NOT control your addiction.   You can rationalize it away… “It cost money, I’ll be done with it soon, but my kids love it, I haven’t had that much anyways” are all stories told in order to be consistent in weakness.

I use harsh reality because you need to make a harsh choice if you are serious about getting things right in 2016.  There is no time to waste.

2. Become Addicted to the IDEA of working out

I put this one more gently, because life is busy, convenience is king, and you might fail three to five times before getting it right.  So you need to begin to see yourself as someone who loves working out, no matter how much you hate it now.  If you can begin to perceive that you are the workout lady, walking the stores at 4pm with your kids, in your workout gear, because you have been planning on working out all day, even if you never did… at least you are one step closer.

The IDEA needs to be one that you nurture, then we can work hard to be sure you follow through.

3. Be at peace

If there is one critical component of health that impacts all others, it is stress.  Diets fail because of stress, workout routines fail because of stress, and nervous systems are directly impacted by stress.  Think about this.  Your brain controls your immune system, which keeps cancer at bay, and provides an opportunity for you to be a functioning machine!  All stress directly impacts your nervous system, because it directly impacts your brain, the key to your nervous system.  Don’t stress!

4. Work on your posture

Holistic, corrective chiropractic care is responsible for miracles.  Our office sees absolute miracles all the time.  Why?  Because as number three states above, your brain controls it all, but it needs your spine to do it.  Your posture directly impacts how well information flows from your brain to your body.  Your posture is the window to the body for the brain.  Get it straight, and realize that it doesn’t happen over night.  Get a foam roller and stretch into extension.  Find a corrective chiropractor, ditch the sit down desk for a brand new stand up one!  Life is waiting for you to take charge!

5. Control Addictions

One addiction might be worse than another, but all addiction can lead to more.  Meaning.  Even though Dr. Mercola posted that a coffee a day can be healthy… a caffeine rich coffee a day can guarantee addiction.  Pull back and drink water processed decaf for a few days, to be sure you are not addicted.  Do a Suero Viv Cleanse once and awhile, and get off of everything for three days.  Addiction can be bad, really bad.  We are all programmed to become addicted to something or another, fight it.

6.  Eat More Vegetables

Dr. Joel Fuhrman has done a great job in underscoring the importance of vegetable nutrition.  So much as to a fault in my eyes, but at least the basis of understanding is there when you read through his material.  Vegetables are more important than fruit, and both are more important than anything else.

To quantify that statement really takes a full workshop, but simply put.  The basic functions of your body have a chance at optimal function when you are consuming high levels of vegetable nutrition.

It is this reason that I have taught of the value of Juice Plus as a supplement for so many years now, and it hasn’t changed.  My goal is to have everyone eating as close to 13 servings of fruit (3 servings) and vegetables (10 servings) a day, where a serving would be an open handful.

7.  Get God

Last and surely the most important from a standpoint of health.  Dig into God’s value added to your life.  Look to put trust in Him as the only purpose or reason for life.  When you get this, all else becomes easier to handle.  God surely will put peace in, and when you have confidence in Hi design for your life, taking control of addiction will become easy.

If you don’t know where to turn, send me an email, and I will take the time to figure out how to help you the most.

Thankful for your concern over health, and your willingness to take necessary steps!

Be well and Be blessed!  – Dr. E

60 Day Thanksgiving

Besides the expected organic turkey (get ready to spend on this by the way), you can have your usual supply of green beans and kerrygold butter, broccoli and kerrygold butter, and a nice garden salad of Kale.

But for hot dishes, add the fantastic “No Tato Mashed Potato” with two to three heads of cauliflower, boiled, then blended with plenty of kerrygold butter and the right touch of salt and pepper.  If you blend it in a Vitamix, it comes out as smooth as you could ever imagine.

The real treat however, is the pumpkin pie.

1 1/2 cans of packed pumpkin (22 ounces and organic)
1 cup xylitol
2 eggs (free range organic)
Blend this up real good, while turning in:
3/4 cup of heavy whipping cream (organic of course)
1/2 tsp of Himalayan salt
1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract

Pour this mixture into a coconut crust:

2 cups of coconut flour
2 tbs coconut oil
2 tbs kerrygold butter
1 egg
1 tsp of Himalayan salt
Pulse blend until you have a large ball to work with.  Use coconut oil, butter or olive oil to grease the pie pan.
Press the crust into the pie pan so it is smooth and even.  Bake empty for 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

pie2

Once the pie filling is poured into the pre-cooked crust, bake it under a tent of aluminum foil, parchment, or other direct heat block (tenting aluminum foil is a good way to be sure you don’t get aluminum in your food, though some sources think it can still penetrate… we think they are wrong, but you can be safe by using something else.

Toss this in the oven for up to 90 minutes depending on how you like it to look, keep it covered the whole time.  You will be looking to see the pumpkin harden.  Temperature = 350 for 60 minutes, 400 for the remaining time.

Cover with whipped cream – heavy whipping cream with a pinch of stevia, whipped til thick and creamy.  Or use my favorite, instant whipped cream maker.

Enjoy everyone!!

Raising Healthy “Eating” Kids

We had a great workshop this past Wednesday by my own grading system.  But I have ways to improve it in the future, I need to put some moms up on stage that have failed to get their kids to eat healthy, and uncover the reasons, and the solutions.  Ultimately, and I know I am going to get flak for this, the problem started because of you (parent) but before you knew the importance.  Or perhaps, one or both of you still don’t know the importance today, and that makes it all too hard.

moms

The moms – Wyndi LaBrecque, Patty Cheek and Laura Richards discussed the efforts they have gone through for their children, but interestingly enough, all gave reference to the effort that they have gone through for themselves.  A “PALEO” mom, a “Healing Diet” mom and a “Straight 60” mom…. all following diets that we teach and lead for our patients and clients.

So what does it all mean?  You better get yourself educated and committed if you want your kids to follow.  Let them see the efforts you put forth, and let them understand the reasons.  I have some friends, where the dads obey no rules on an ongoing basis.  Those kids are going to trust that rules are meant to be broken in respect to food.  Simple.

One point that I made, is that food as a reward, creates an emotional tie to food.  Then of course, Wyndi knocked it out of the park with a comment on food that mirrored a Facebook post I made earlier in the week.  Food IS emotional, and Traditions are Emotional and Traditions are often Food.  So figure out how to win that battle when the value of Thanksgiving is somehow measured by the quality of the pumpkin pie.  I mean seriously… do you expect to gain control and confidence over healthy eating with that mentality?

Or – “well, its a birthday, of course we eat cake”.  If you eat cake at every persons birthday this year, you will eat enough trans fat to kill off a colony of mice in a year. Is this tradition worth it?  Every year it seems I am strict on the Straight 60 during the Fall now… every season I don’t eat pumpkin muffins, pumpkin scones, and pumpkin bread through Fall.  But you know what?  This year I decided that if pumpkin grains were something I wanted, I would make them myself over Christmas in lieu of cookies.  Boom!  New tradition started.

The reality is that I am an incredible alternative grain baker.  Yeah, pretty darn incredible.  Ha.  I mean, if you give me some eggs, some aluminum free baking soda, a package of coconut oil and coconut flour.  Toss in some stevia or xylitol (caution the total use of this), with a can of organic pumpkin… I am going to bake you a winner.  A little raw heavy whipping cream on top and you’ll sing my praises… but not because I am good.  Rather because it is easy.

So, look for this video to be uploaded soon… coming very soon.  If you follow the Facebook pages of HealthSprout or 60 Day Turnaround, you will see the announcement, and you can watch this workshop on video.  Til then…

Tom Brady Hates Coca Cola and Kelloggs!

Tom Brady… full of himself, cheater, winner?  The Four Time NFL Superbowl Champion Quarterback has made it very clear recently that he has no love for the junk food industry.  Calling Coca Cola POISON and laughing about actually considering Frosted Flakes food.

I love it, I love it because Tom is contrversial, and famous, and even though I don’t have respect for him for the most part, he is using his fame for good right now.  Perhaps not as much good as he should, but a great step.  What I really love, is this morning show interview that almost sounds like me talking.

“Its all sugar now, it used to be fat, but now it is sugar”

Brady Junk Food

Click the image above to be taken to a great video.

I cannot even explain how frustrating it is when I tell people “I actually eat a high fat diet on purpose” and my response is laughter.  I hear it all the time, “Ha.  Ha.”

“No, I am serious.  Healthy fat is one of the greatest deficiencies in our country.  Everyone has been scared of fat thank you Merck for bringing us Mevacor, and with it, one of the greatest lies ever played on the American people.”

They don’t get it.  It takes more than a moment.  If you don’t get it still, the fat vs. sugar argument, then there is a problem, and we need to fix it.  More and more of us “fat proponents” are being called geniuses everyday.  Get on board and be a genius.

Sugar is death, DAMAGED fats are death.  Together they make oxidized cholesterol.  Good Fat does not.

Healthy Fats are life.  Re-read the story of the processed meat, and move away from those foods.  Get to eating clean beef, and clean chicken and turkey.  Not DIRTY BIRD garbage like most of you are eating at fast food (Chick-fil-a is still fast food garbage).  Get clean foods,  foods that are offered to you the way God made them.  So few of these foods exist today in our culture, yet our pressure is bringing them back.

Way to go Tom Brady for joining the fight and doing something good with your fame.  Maybe, just maybe we can make a difference.

Eat to Live or Live to Eat?

Written by Dr. Mark

The other day I was on day 3 of my Suero Cleanse,  drinking one of the bottles in front of a friend. So naturally the conversation as to what that is comes up. As I’m explaining it’s a 3 day cleanse where you eat nothing but just drink these, his response was “no way, never, life is too short, if you gave me the option to not eat for 3 days or die, I’d choose death!” I didn’t think much of the comment at the time, I knew he was part exaggerating, part teasing, and I’ve heard this before, especially the life is too short concept. I agree, life here is short, and should be enjoyed.

I’ve thought about what he said for a few days, and I know I’ve struggled with this myself, the idea that food should be good and pleasurable. God made fruit right? My next thought is, if you ask someone that uses cocaine, I’m sure they’d say it’s good and pleasurable too, but as someone that doesn’t use it I can easily say, yeah maybe it is, but the harm it causes you outweighs that good and pleasurable  feeling. So can I use that same logic with food? Yes, its good and pleasurable for that moment, but does that outweigh the harm? And is it really a conscious choice or are statements like this really coming from an addiction that we are just unaware of? I’m sure you’ve seen those statements about sugar being just as addictive as cocaine, which I’m not sure how valid a statement that is, but I do know sugar addiction is a very real thing, that if you haven’t ever tried going without it for an extended amount of time, you most likely are addicted to it at some level.

So is the pleasure from food worth it to sacrifice your health? Is life not worth it if you’re not enjoying your food? As someone who has been on both sides of this, No, it is not worth sacrificing your health for that moment of pleasure from food. The truth is also, that health food, Straight 60 food, can get to be just as satisfying. For me it doesn’t start out that way, but with each week those salads become more satisfying.  But its frustrating that I know this, and yet I’m tempted to fall back to that other food on almost a daily basis. The addiction is strong!

About my friend I mentioned above, the real frustrating thing is that he also suffers from type 2 diabetes, and has had it for about 16 years, taking medication 3 times a day for it, with little hope of that ever changing. We’ve had people in this situation go through the 60 day turnaround and get off their medication, and I know it would help him in some way. I’ve spoke to him about it before, and he hasn’t shown much interest, so for now I’ll keep my path and lead by example.

So “Eat to live or Live to Eat,” a quote I stole from the movie Over the Hedge, really does sum this up. Do we allow food to be a pleasure drug that we are addicted to, that is harming us little by little each day, taking away from our quality of life, or the best “drug” available to promote health and healing, to feel great and really enjoy what life has to offer?

Eat Well – Dr. Mark

Meat is Cancer – what to know!

According to the World Health Organization, a review of literature has prompted them to classify processed meats and over consumption of red meat as a Level 1 carcinogen.  This level puts these foods in the same risk category as smoking cigarettes!

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-34615621

BBC Meat

Overall the study suggested that processed meat such as bacon, will increase the risk of colo-rectal cancer by 18% with as little as two slices of bacon a day (actually even less than that volume).  But why?  The study went further to explain that red meat is “likely a carcinogen” as well.  And once again, the best question not being answered is, why?

The answer is inflammation.  The problem with these meats, is that they are highly toxic meats that have been processed with strong nitrates and nitrites, both carcinogenic.  In addition, these meats are often from animals raised in a very toxic environment, where they are treated with drugs such as antibiotics, or the ever popular arsenic laden med for feed preservation and for reduction of certain infectious conditions in poultry.

The toxic nature of these foods, leads to inflammatory responses, which create the environment necessary for cancer.

(cancers grow best in anaerobic environments, which exist when there is lower oxygen levels, which occur when capillary beds are restricting blood flow, which happens when capillary beds themselves are restricted due to inflammation)

So yes indeed, you should avoid bacon.  I haven’t eaten it for 8+ years, and I am happy that I am clean, even though I would love to eat some of that tasty smelling, rotten filthy dirty animal bacon.

But what about red meat?  I am the grass fed beef pushing weirdo that you probably think of as a little crazy, but here we are… one camp saying no red meat, the other saying all the red meat you want… as long as…. yep… its grass fed!  Why?  Once again inflammation.  The grass fed beef that we are pushing does NOT create the affect that the WHO is talking about in the meats they are implicating.  A grass fed burger is not cancer causing.

Just know that the burger I had tonight from Canyon’s, was an inflammatory mess… and should I eat it again tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after, I am quickly fulfilling those pre-requisites to be on the inflammatory/carcinogenic team.

So here are your basic rules then –

1.  Stay away from nitrates and nitrates except for those that naturally occur in celery juice.

2.  Eat only two servings a week of conventionally raised red meat.

3. Meat should go organic before any other food in your kitchen.  So stay the course for clean with your meats.

Once these rules have sunk in well, you will be well on your way to avoiding the risks of red meat and bacon, and in so doing, will be able to find yourself other healthy substitutes.

A grass fed burger is not cancer causing.

Suero Viv Cleanse

Does it matter if you are ripped after the cleanse?  I mean, relative to your current weight, fat/muscle ratio, your appearance and waist size.  Given those variables, and tossing in three days without food, utilizing probiotics and a smidgen of protein supporting this sodium/potassium pump to drive fluid movement in your body… what is the acceptable outcome?

The answer is that YES, you should be ripped (your version of ripped), but then it all depends on what you are doing going into it.  I found that this last time I lost over five pounds, the exact number is unknown to me because I don’t have an accurate “pre” measurement.  I failed to step on since I began the 60 Day, so I imagine at 8# down, approximately three came from the first two weeks, and 5# from the cleanse.  Which is enough for me to think that there was some inflammation as well as some very fast fat loss.

Here is a very good question then, how do you drive “very fast fat loss”?  Leptin and activity.  The more sensitive your leptin is and the more activity you have during a fast, the more aggressive your weight loss will be.  Depending.

Depending on what?

On your other hormone response.  When you first enter the path of fasting, your body may drive an elevated cortisol level for a few days to offset the reduction of calories.  Cortisol will create sugar to burn, and it can turn any tissue into sugar.  So cortisol is the enemy in our controlled fasting.  But the good news, is that as you continue to fast, and workout, and fast and workout… as long as you are doing it wisely, then you will produce less and less cortisol.  And as your leptin drops and becomes more sensitive, you will be more better and better at burning fat.

ORDER HERE

In the image of my abs above, you can see that the lower abdominals are bulging, more than the abdominals above.  To me, this is a clear sign that I have inflammation in that area, that could use a combination of intermittent fasting, and also further analysis of my current food sensitivities.  It just might be that I need to drop a food or two to reduce inflammation (which will look better but more importantly…), building greater function and health.

It might simply be that in time, with more fat burning done without food supply, that this would change.  The reality is that I am not concerned with what that lower abdominal area looks like, as long as I am on top of understanding why it is what it is.  Learning which foods I am more apt to inflame from, will help me reduce injury risk to my shoulders.  My shoulders have been damaged so many times in my life, that this is perhaps the greatest benefit for me, in knowing my inflammatory foods.

So that is all for this short post.  Understanding inflammation, understanding fat burning, understanding that there is no perfect understanding, and realizing that if you do want to get ripped, I can get you there.  But lets stay focused on the health consequence.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

41

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source.

36

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
