The Beautiful Song…

Today’s Daily Sprout is not for those sitting in the seats (unless you are sitting there with your iPhone, iPad, other smart phone or tablet…

You need to come online and listen.

It is a great story of how a teen, who has been nicknamed “Organic” by his friends, sings the blues of his existence with no real snacks in his house.  This is good stuff, as it portrays the strong cultural push to absolutely destroy health.  And though he sings from a point of comedy, we know there is something real about the kid being forced into health food.

I think we all lived it, funny though, health food to me was having to eat some grapefruit while I spooned sugar onto my cheerios.  Or possibly the two pieces of broccoli on the side of my plate full of spaghetti.  Funny how we have gotten smarter, and in that increase in our wisdom, our kids suffer!

Well… so they think.  The reality is that we are fighting back from a serious amount of damage done to our DNA.  If you have ever heard me speak on epigenetics, this should make a little bit of sense to you.  If not, well, you are probably in the dark.  Just know this – the DNA that is transcribed to you, is a product of all the life decisions that were made by both of your parents, up until the point at which you were conceived.

Likewise, the decisions you have made before having children, has further effected that DNA.  This is the phenotype expression, which is written on the DNA of our offspring.  So, considering that your kids might have kids in their early 20’s, which means, they would have made poor health decisions for 9/10 of their life before having kids… which means poor genetics.

I guess, it might just be worth it to force healthy food on our kids.  Just in case we care about the future of our world.  🙂

The Skinny – Fat Part 4

“Fat burners are made, they aren’t born… well, they were born, but then ruined, now re-made…”

– Dr. Eric, discussing the importance of fat in a workshop

Yeah, that is my quote.  Good one for a few reasons.  The back tracking is actually really important, because the reality is that most people have ruined the fat burning potential of their children by the time they are 6.  Why?  Because fat burning is a bio-chemical process that requires well oiled pathways.

The key, if you remember the first part to this series, is in  the caloric content of fat.  9 per gram.  A significant source of energy.  The average child raised on a “good” diet, rich with fruits and vegetables, will be a fat burner.  They are fat burners, even though they aren’t necessarily eating a diet rich in fat right now.  But they did.

Breast milk has approximately 4.2g of fat per 100ml according to wikipedia; of course the composition changes dramatically from feeding to feeding, but based more on the mothers fluid consumption than her fat consumption.    That means there is approximately 36 calories of fat per 100ml of milk.  Guess who learns how to use fat for energy? That little furnace that is a burning fire of metabolism.  Which just might have been you.

Now we have established that we all start as fat burners, and the really cool thing is that it continues forever, as long as we don’t screw it up.  We do need to keep consuming fat, but we also have to watch out for… sugar.  Yep.  Number one cause of the reduction of fat burning capacity, is the consumption of sugar.

LEPTIN

And so, once again, the discussion degenerates into a leptin workshop!  LOL – yeah, seriously, I laugh, as all of my diet talks inevitably end up discussing leptin, the little master hormone that means everything to those who cannot lose weight, to those with fertility issues or thyroid imbalances, to those with any hormonal balance really.  Hopefully you have followed our Daily Sprout’s and have picked up on the Leptin discussion, and realize that this is the hormone that tells you to

BURN FAT and to STOP EATING.

skinny-rules

Bob has done a good job getting people skinny, but even he is missing the real point… but it is a good start.

Yeah, it is a little important when it comes to utilizing fat for energy.  The problem is that the more sugar we eat, the worse your leptin sensitivity becomes.  Wearing down over time to the point where you have little to no function in hearing this beautiful little hormone’s call to stop eating and burn fat.  Thus, ultimately, the thing that has made fat stop making you skinny, is sugar.

If we come full circle on today’s lesson, we will find ourselves standing here wondering what I need to do in order to get myself back to a place, where eating fat, makes me thin.  The answer is simply to reduce sugar, and increase healthy fat.  It takes time, so the “60 Day Diet” is designed to attack it quickly, otherwise results are slow to come, and commitments are quick to wane.

Good fats that bring back leptin sensitivity quickly:
Coconut Oil
Pasture (grass fed) butter
Nuts and seeds – almonds, walnuts, pecans, macadamia, pepitas, sunflower, sesame, flax, chia  (and others)

Fat Part 3

As we plug along on our journey of fat discovery, remember, I hate the idea of low fat.  If we get milk (which we rarely do) I want it to be full fat.  Raw, grass fed, and full fat.  And that, brings me in to today’s topic, which is that there is a lot of value in fat… IF you get the correct source.

In the last article, I had a question posted on our blog, asking why LEAN meat.  The simple answer, is that God said so.

Leviticus 7:23 – “Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats.”

I believe the wisdom in this, is that fat, regardless of what animal it comes from, is a storage site, and can easily store toxins.  This is why we don’t actively pursue the fat, but rather, we know the fat which is in the meat, the marbling as it were, is enough.  But how do you tell if the fat is a healthy food or an unhealthy food?  It all rides on the animals diet.

Just as you are what you eat, so was the cow, fish, chicken, lamb, etc.  before you ate it.  It is what it ate.  Watch the movie “King Corn” available in our lending library, and tell me that you want to eat cattle that are nearly dead for most of their life.   This is the reason why the USDA Prime Dry Aged Beef, is really nothing but dirty garbage.  Sure, I’ll eat the dirty garbage once every couple of months, but I don’t distort the reality of the situation.  That I am eating something that needs to be detoxed from my body (read below).

On the flip-side, I eat grass fed beef five to ten times a week, every single week, and I do so with a scientifically and Biblically sound, “trust” in the health benefits of doing so.  Why can I eat this beef so regularly and trust that I am well?  Because a grass fed cow has these benefits:

  1. The fat is highly omega 3.  The fat in a conventionally raised cow is 20 times as much omega 6 as omega 3.  In addition, because the fat is the major storage site for toxins, these cows who are fed heavily chemically sprayed grain, which is also GMO grain, and they were likely raised on Monsanto’s recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (how dirty do you want to get your cow).  A grass fed cow is in some cases 1:1 Omega 3 to Omega 6 fat.  This is worth the effort all by itself as the major issue with grain fed beef is the level of inflammation created by this animal.
  2. Leaner.  Even in the world of eat more fat, and eat more fat, and oh by the way did I tell you to eat more fat.  We should trust the biblical principle, and the science that supports it, and not go crazy eating animal fat.  Well, a grass fed animal had to walk around to eat.  The grain fed counterpart was forced to NEVER walk around.  Stuck in its stall, eating… all the time.  That poor animal is fat.  Really, really fat.
  3. Cleaner.  Like we said up top, this beef is not chemically sprayed, so it is clean.  Much cleaner that any conventionally raised beef, making it much healthier for you, and easy on your liver.

I started this article with a focus on the milk.  We should touch on this, as the value of pasture dairy (dairy from a grass fed cow), is consistent with the value of the beef from that same cow.  Omega 3 fat is the first benefit, but one of the often missed benefits of a grass fed cow, is the low level of A1 Beta Casein, which is the inflammatory protein.   There are certain breeds of cattle, when fed grass, that produce almost no A1 beta casein.  In some cases, individuals who have sworn off dairy, can suddenly eat cheese, and milk (in moderation), with no issues at all.  Or, someone who is eating this dairy, might avoid the long term inflammatory response that suddenly shows up in so many unsuspecting individuals.

Secondary problems of this beef market, lie in the fact that we have created a grain market entirely based on the needs of a people eating a completely unhealthy food.  The reality, is that we feed chickens the same thing we feed the cattle.  Consider that the US estimates that we eat 71 Million LBS of chicken every day.  That is a WHOLE lot of chemically sprayed, GMO grain that has actually had arsenic added to it.

The issues are significant, and rampant, because we are a government controlled food producer, and those who have received assistance financially, hold onto that assistance, even though it is upside down from all levels of analysis.  We should not be producing corn like it is the only crop on the planet.  Especially when we consider it is GMO, and that the GMO crop is what is fed to our conventional beef.  This situation has impacted the poor in our country more than you might ever stop to realize.

“…because of the subsidization of commodity crops in our country (subsidizing grain production vs. healthy food production like fruits and vegetables), Twinkies are cheaper than carrots and Doritos are cheaper than apples, the poor in our country by necessity are eating the cheapest calories ”   – John Robbins author of “No Happy Cows”

The worst case scenario, is that we have cheap beef and cheap toxic snacks, being fed to our population.  They become the staple products of our country, and then we end up right where we are.  Where the healthcare costs in our country are nearly $3,000 more per person, per year, than the next closest country (which is nearly 40% of our total).  We are wasting our money, our health, and our future generations away.  Its time to wake up and decide to change.  You just missed the grass fed beef co-op with Indian Creek Angus, but it doesn’t mean you cannot jump on it with them on your own.  Tell them HealthSprout sent you , and you would like the best deal you can get.  It is time to make your voting dollars vote the right way, for the sake of you and your family.

Taking it easy…

Life is hectic.  You know, I think life is more hectic now than it might have ever been in my entire life.  Not stressful, but hectic.  I have “stuff” going on at all times.  I am a partner/owner in ten businesses: HealthSprout, The Garage, CrossFit Towne Lake, CrossFit Bridgemill, CrossFit Silos, The Garage Games, Firebreather Challenge, 60 Day Turnaround, Communic8 – the Art of Chiropractic Communication, GarageMedia.TV and small ancillary businesses within these.

My point, is that if I were not intentional in both my effort to compartmentalize my life (not let everything just blend into everything else), or my effort to take time to just “chill”, I would be a nervous wreck.  I would be a disaster… well, maybe I am, but I am an effective disaster.  And the reason why I am an effective disaster, is because I know to take it easy.

One of my partners recently commented while I was not present to some other partners, “I don’t know how someone can just live their life comfortable being late all the time.”  He was referring to me.  And the reason why, is because I know that my presence isn’t necessary.  That it is requested, and that I am busy, and that I will not let anything stress me out… even being late… really late.  Whatever, you don’t need me as much as you think.  Likewise, nobody needs you as much as you think, sorry, it might hurt… take it easy.  God wants you stress-less.

So tonight, I am in the midst of so many important things.  Yet, I am writing this with my younger brother to my left, my wife to my right, his wife further right, staring at a fire, drinking some wine, and talking about life.  He is moving here in a few months, just got himself a house to rent for his family, and then he’ll be working with me, taking care of you.  Changing spines and building health.  I look forward to it, the opportunity to take this office back to where we were a few years ago, and then beyond.

The community is hurting.  Health is failing.  The need is evident, and our ability to help is obvious, so we’ll take it up to 1,000 visits a week.  But, not without taking it easy.  Ephesians says to imitate Christ.  Jesus was relational if nothing else.  He built incredible relationships, He invested in the lives of people.  He stopped to take it easy, and by doing so he demonstrated one of the most important traits that we could follow.  Rest, don’t stress, and get to know people.

I wish I was better at the latter of those.

I am great at taking it easy, and being low stress, but I don’t always dig into the lives of others the way I should.  I wish I would just always be committed to others.  But if not, well… I guess I have something to strive for.  How about you?  We all have seasons of life that don’t match up with our goals, where we aren’t necessarily who we want to be.  But if it goes on for three years, five, a decade… is it a season?  Or are we now stuck in a destructive pattern?

None of us will sit and say “I am exactly where I thought I would be at this point in my life, I have achieved the exact success that I had hoped for in all areas”.  I have a good friend who just built a house on the beach on Martha’s Vineyard.  Pretty cool place to be.  BUT, he is not where he expected to be at this point.

My point in all of this, as I jump around discussing all of these concerns over our comfort, or our success, is that we as a people are a stressed out bunch.  We want more, whether it be stuff, or success, or reach, or… legacy.  We want to leave a bigger mark on the world, and people around us.  And though I believe there are good reasons behind many of these desires, our real goal should be to look for God’s view of our lives, figure out how to serve and fulfill, and be content.

Men are bad at this by the way.  We are so competitive… in ways that we shouldn’t be.  Do work.  Good work, and you will be fulfilling your destiny.

Enjoy a fire, take it easy. Be well and Be blessed! – Dr. E

The Dangers of Ant-acid Medications.

The Dangers of Ant-acid Medications.

Most of us have eaten the wrong food at one point or another and experienced the heartburn that subsequently follows it.  Maybe it was a big Italian meal on a Sunday, or a Thanksgiving dinner, or chili cheese fries at the amusement park.  Whatever it was caused you to be in a lot of discomfort in the hours after eating the meal.  You definitely didn’t want to feel this way any longer, and so you searched through medicine cabinet for relief. “Aha!  Prilosec. This should do the trick! After all, Larry the Cable Guy said it was ok…”

The story that is told to us by drug company commercials goes like this:  Have heartburn? Well, we have a miracle cure for that… just take this pill and it will all go away, and then you can continue eating all the foods that your appetite desires.”

The story told by our body is a much different story.  I shall tell you that story.

Once upon a time… When you drop an antacid pill down into the stomach it begins neutralizing the PH of the stomach immediately. The human stomach needs to have an acidic PH of 1.5-3.5.  Ant-acids raise that PH. The rest of the story is what happens when you mess with the PH of the stomach.

  1. Protein Mal-digestion.  The neutralization of the stomach’s PH causes the proteins in your food to become mal-digested, which over time, leads to putrefaction.  Putrefaction literally means, “to rot”. Gross. This rotting of food in your gut produces toxic byproducts, and over time will lead to toxicity in your gut.
  2. Non-Activation of small bowel digestive enzymes.  A phenomenon known as the “alkaline tide” happens when the acid from the stomach rushes into the small bowels after it leaves the stomach, and triggers the activation of enzymes in the small bowel. In the case of an acid blocker, this alkaline tide never occurs.  Consequently, no digestion occurs.
  3. Mineral solubility. The acid in the stomach allows minerals in your food to be properly absorbed in the body by making them soluble.  When the acid isn’t there… you don’t get minerals.  That’s not a good situation.  Your body needs minerals, particularly your bones.
  4. First line of defense shuts down.  Part of your body’s first line of defense is the acid in your stomach.  When you ingest food, you not only take in the food that you are eating, but a variety of bad bacteria and viruses.  Taking away this acidity leaves you susceptible to these microorganisms. These pathogens set up shop in your small bowel and ferment the carbohydrates that you eat.  So, now you have a problem with protein and carbohydrate mal-digestion.  Eventually, when things get bad enough you can throw fats in there with them.

Understanding this may not be enough to put this into perspective.  So let’s take a look at the long-term effects.

Protein mal-digestion: Toxic byproducts from rotting food à Cancer, Autoimmune disease, Food allergies, Decreased digestive function, and Chronic fatigue.

Decreased mineral absorption: Osteoporosis (increased risk of hip fracture by 44%), Iron deficiency Anemia

Acid doesn’t kill pathogens:  Small bowel overgrowth (fermented bad bacteria), Dysbiosis, Parasitic Infections.

At the end of the day… ant-acids = a recipe for disaster. Now, go tell someone that needs to hear this.

Survey Results!

The human nervous system is literally the most amazing thing in the universe. Chiropractors use words like “magnificent”,  “awesome”, “beautiful”, and an array of other superlatives to describe the nervous system’s infinite and innate ability to heal and give life and function to our bodies.  I’m no poet, but these are the words that have to come to mind when you sit back and really observe what the brain is capable of.  Dr. Eric and I will liken it to the power of God within your body. We move the bone, God does the healing.  If you were to get cut off from that power, the power that made the body… you lack health, function, and ultimately life.  This is why we say that the most damaging condition that you could possibly have is a subluxation cutting you off from this POWER that starts in the your brain.  An unhealthy spine is an insidious and powerfully damaging condition that robs you from living a healthy life to your fullest potential.

Last week we took a survey to find out what happens when we remove subluxation.  What happens when you un-pinch, un-stretch, or un-torque a damaged nerve? Life flows!

When I made this survey, I purposefully left out any questions about pain. Of course, we don’t want you to be in pain… but we would rather see you with perfectly functioning organs, than to see you feel less pain.  It’s that simple.  What is more important… that your heart and lungs function and heal the way they are meant to? Or, that you walk around pain free?  This survey was specifically designed to show that the removal of subluxations dramatically improves your physiology… not just your pain levels.  The results were fantastic!

A total of 35 surveys were filled out.

25 patients reported having improvements in multiple of the following symptoms:

Headaches, Digestion, Immune function, Ear infections, Sinus issues, Cholesterol levels, Blood pressure, Female issues, Fertility issues, Blood sugar levels, Mood, Allergies, Energy levels, Overall stress, Tingling/Numbness, Vertigo.

10 people reported that they have gotten off of some or all of the medications.

28 people reported that they have more energy/spunk since starting under chiropractic care.

18 patients have attended our workshops.  Remember, chiropractic isn’t everything. You have to actively pursue your health… coming to these workshops will give you the tools you need to see even more dramatic improvements in your health!

35 out of 35 patients reported that their health has improved since getting under care!! Amazing.

15 patients reported having had sleeping problems before chiropractic care.  13 are sleeping better.

WOW.
Amazing what can happen from improving the health of your spine.

OK… mission time.   Who is brave enough to go and tell your spouse, your best friend, your co-worker, your workout partner… that it is absolutely essential to get checked?  They don’t live in Woodstock? Fine… tell us where they live and we will get them to the right chiropractor.  Remember, you have the ability to improve someone’s overall health by just opening your mouth and telling them about the POWER of chiropractic.

Ok. Go get adjusted… 🙂

FAT The Truth – Part 2

The second part of our series on Fat is going to hit the “Does Fat make you Fat” question.  The answer is a pretty decisive no.  First, lets revisit this idea of fat as a good energy source, this from wikipedia:

Fatty acids, stored as triglycerides in an organism, are an important source of energy because they are both reduced andanhydrous. The energy yield from a gram of fatty acids is approximately 9 kcal (37 kJ), compared to 4 kcal/g (17 kJ/g) for carbohydrates. Since the hydrocarbon portion of fatty acids is hydrophobic, these molecules can be stored in a relatively anhydrous(water-free) environment. Carbohydrates, on the other hand, are more highly hydrated. For example, 1 g of glycogen can bind approximately 2 g of water, which translates to 1.33 kcal/g (4 kcal/3 g). This means that fatty acids can hold more than six times the amount of energy per unit of storage mass. Put another way, if the human body relied on carbohydrates to store energy, then a person would need to carry 31 kg (67.5 lb) of hydrated glycogen to have the energy equivalent to 4.5 kg (10 lb) of fatHibernating animals provide a good example for utilizing fat reserves as fuel. For example, bears hibernate for about 7 months, and, during this entire period, the energy is derived from degradation of fat stores.

Pecans

Buttered Pecans with salt – AWESOME!

Basically, what we are saying is that fat is a really good source of energy.  Fat storage is thus normal and ok, as it provides you with an opportunity to fast for longer periods without any serious negative effect other than hunger.  But lets go a little deeper and look at what happens with fat when you consume it dietarily, and we will understand why crabohydrate tends to be the DRIVING force behind fat storage, not the consumption of fat.

Fat comes into the body as triglyceride, it is the broken down into free fatty acid (primarily).  You actually have to break it down to get it into the body, then you re-from it as triglyceride again.  These triglycerides are then moved through the body to be used up.  Their use is based on where they end up.  Some end up binding to tissue and muscle cells where they will be metabolized and used for building blocks of new healthy tissue, or as immediate energy.   Some will go into the adipose tissue to be stored for future energy, but this has been estimated to be 1/3 the rate that carbohydrate is retained for future use.

The WHY is in the fact that insulin is driven up by carbohydrate increasing blood sugar, and the storage is forced on the body with carbohydrate, where fat is not forced into storage, but utilized as energy more immediately… IF…. IF…. you are a fat burner.  Which will bring us to the conversation on Leptin and Insulin (future part).  The cool thing about the above information, is that you are breaking down fat, and utilizing it, as it enters the body.  SERIOUS NOTE – if you are not a fat burner, and you increase your fat consumption, without decreasing your sugar consumption, you will store both of them.  The 60 Day Diet is the answer to getting you into fat burning freedom.

This short chart is also from wikipedia (with my added notes), and it shows the importance of cholesterol, as well as the job.

  • Chylomicrons (derived from triglycerides) carry diet-derived lipids to body cells (this will allow them to be utilized as energy or building blocks)
  • VLDLs carry lipids synthesized by the liver to body cells (again, for the same reasons as the above transport system)
  • LDLs carry cholesterol around the body (which can be for any reason)
  • HDLs carry cholesterol from the body back to the liver for breakdown and excretion. (this is why “good” cholesterol is something you want as it manages the “bad” – i hate that misnomer of a term – cholesterol)

Let me finish this part with the next step for you.  You need to decrease your carbohydrate intake.  Best way is to cut grains down, then reduce any free sugars in the form of desserts, straight fructose, etc.  Also, be on HIGH alert for over doing fruits like bananas, and grapes.  There are very little value to these foods, other than a quick shot of high fructose energy.

Next, increase your fat.  Stop buying “low-fat” anything.  I had a conversation with a patient yesterday about a low fat kefir.  They bought it because it said grass fed, but the whole reason why we drive the grass fed movement is because the fat is a healthier fat than a grain fed cow.  Now, there could be other positives in the fact that we know they aren’t eating GMO grass (doesn’t exist), and we wouldn’t know if the grain they could’ve eaten was GMO or not.  But the real value is the fat.  So if we are buying a grass fed dairy product, and they take all the fat out of it… we lose the whole reason we want to buy grass fed.

I think you are getting the point.  If you haven’t read the first FAT Sprout in the series, check it out here: http://www.healthsprout.com/the-story-of-fat-part-1/
