The Risk of Daily NSAID’s

I posted a video on facebook on Sunday, it comes from the American Gastroenterology Association.  Funny.  I mean, you know, the idea of even watching a video from this group seems to be, well, gassy.  But, the video in fact is very valuable.

The discussion was regarding the gastro-intestinal issues that come from long term use of NSAID’s, such as naproxen or aspirin.  My immediate first response, was to google the primary speaker in the video, Byron Cryer MD.  He has a good history of education, Bachelor’s at Harvard, Medical School at Baylor.  Faculty in gastroenterology at University of Texas Southwestern.  I decided that he at least would have some credibility.

The direction of the discussion went beyond the basic side effects of NSAID use of stomach discomfort, intestinal discomfort, etc.   And, in turn the brief discussion touched on stomach ulcers, and ultimately perforation, which can both be deadly.  I had a nurse who was a patient of mine for a few months in my Roswell office back in 2003.  She had required a transfusion after taking a migraine med that had similar side effects, and led to intestinal bleeding in her.  I bring up her example, because she laid in bed for three days due to significant fatigue, due to her bleeding from her ulcers.  Had she not been around other medical professionals who were checking on her, and who eventually urged her to the hospital… she would have likely died in her sleep at some point from bleeding out in her home.  The side effects are not only serious, but often disguised.

His faculty counterpart who was also in this sort film, Dr. Stuart Spechler, brings up the associated heart disease risk of NSAIDs…

“Aspirin has been shown to protect the heart… other NSAID’s may increase your risk of developing a heart attack…”

Something that we at HealthSprout have preached about for years.  Citing many different studies on increased risks of all anti-inflammatory drugs, not specifically the NSAID group.  Dr. Mercola has an article on this topic, in which he points out that the common “switch” that MD’s might prescribe to lower heart disease risk, has also been in a bit of a troubled state over its own heart disease risk:
Cox 2 Inhibitors.  Vioxx – remember that one?  144,000 people sued, 60,000 deaths were listed as direct causal relationship, and the others as indirect.  What a disaster that drug was.  And still today the number of users on Celebrex hasn’t really diminished, yet it is a very similar medication.

And what is the cost of this mess?  Well, according to Dr. Mercola’s article:

Stomach upset, nausea, and vomiting are among the most common side effects, but numerous studies have linked NSAIDs to far more adverse effects, including death.2 According to a 1998 study published in the American Journal of Medicine:3

“Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone. The figures of all NSAID users would be overwhelming, yet the scope of this problem is generally under-appreciated.”

The real problem when we pull back and consider what is happening here, starts with the philosophical bend of our culture.  “I want to be symptom free”  “I don’t care about optimal health, I want to be symptom free”.

Nobody ever verbalizes line one or two, they verbalize “I want to be healthier”.  But without having a philosophy of what that really means, they simply take option 1, symptom free please, and assume that it means health.

Just like many of you, when you start feeling better, you commonly associate that with “your spine is fixed”.  Ha!  It takes a 40% loss of function to feel the problem, and commonly if it has been around for some time, 50-60% loss has happened, which is why it sometimes takes a long time to feel better, why it sometime takes a long time for our efforts to not hurt you, and why even when it all stops hurting, it is likely that you are no better than 60% of full function.  The pursuit of health is a journey, get on board and stay awhile.

Thanks for concern over health and well being, I think we will all agree one day that it is worth it.  In the meantime, stay focused on the Christmas in July event… if you have a spouse or child, who has never been checked out, this is your time.  Just because you had enough sense to take  symptom seriously, doesn’t mean that sense should be thrown out the window on someone without any symptoms yet.

Oil Pulling

By now, if you’ve been reading the daily sprout on a regular basis, you’ve noticed that we take a natural and holistic approach to everything health related, not just with chiropractic. When we see there is a real and powerful value in something, we want you to know about it. There are some topics that get us fired up, and some that at the very least compelling to consider as an alternative approach to health. A couple of days ago I ran across an article on Mercola’s website about an ancient oral hygienic technique. It’s interesting that I often use the analogy… “If you take care of your teeth, why wouldn’t you take care of your spine?” (Especially when there is no such thing as a spinal transplant… you’ve got one for life. Take care of it!) It’s fitting that we at least address the first part of that analogy, because holistic healthcare deals with whole body health… including your teeth!
The ancient technique that I mentioned is called “oil pulling”. It’s an oral hygienic technique that I’ve been experimenting with over the past few days. Oil pulling has been around for thousands of years and is making headlines in natural news today. Mercola says, “Western science is now “playing catch-up” to what natives of tropical regions have known for thousands of years.” Coconut oil is high in the medium fatty acid chain known as Lauric Acid. Lauric Acid is widely known for its antimicrobial effect, especially against Streptococcus bacteria, which is one of the culprits in tooth decay. Of course, sugary diets feed these bacteria and should not be overlooked as true cause of dental carries. But, Lauric Acid found in coconut oil has an inhibitory effect on this strand of bacteria, which does not allow it to grow.
The idea is that if you take a tablespoon of coconut oil and “pull” it through your teeth and mouth for a period of 20 minutes, you will essentially kill all the harmful bacteria in your mouth, thereby preventing the tooth decay, cavities, and periodontitis that are caused by Streptococcus. I began to read into the testimonials about oil pulling and found that in some cases people have had almost instant and “miraculous” results, while others took almost a year to notice any difference. The one thing I did pick up on is that almost everybody has something positive to report about oil pulling. We know that oral health is important, as even the Medical community will admit that poor dental health can cause heart disease. Reports of the benefits of oil pulling include: Improved heart health, increased immune function, improved nasal cavity health and function, reduction in arthritic inflammation, improved gut function, migraine relief, and of course teeth whitening, healthier gums (firmer and decrease bleeding), and decreases in dental carries… the list literally goes on and on. What it can actually do in reality remains to be speculated, experimented with, and hopefully soon studied in depth.
In my own personal experience so far, I’ve noticed healthier gums as well as a cleaner feeling mouth. I suspect that over time I will begin noticing even more. It’s something to consider in your approach to dental health! Warning: do not swallow the coconut oil after pulling. It is full of toxins that it just pulled out of your body! Have a wonderful day, and go get your power turned on!

EWG.org – Update on Their Mission

Environmental Working Group – they brought you the dirty dozen and the clean fifteen, and then they brought “Skin Deep” the clean cosmetics database.  So much that comes for free, and their current focus is this:

Dear Eric,

Big Ag is trying to push through a massive increase in the nationwide use of a toxic weed killer, and the clock is ticking on our chances to stop them.

As I write, the Environmental Protection Agency is weighing whether to approve Dow Chemical Co.’s new weed killing product, Enlist Duo, a mix of the notorious herbicide 2,4-D and another weed killer, glyphosate, the chemical in Monsanto’s Roundup. Dow wants to have growers spray this herbicide concoction on millions of acres of genetically engineered corn and soybeans that have been designed to withstand 2,4-D.

If the EPA approves Enlist Duo, the use of this toxic herbicide will skyrocket. 2,4-D has been linked to serious risks to the environment and human health, including disrupting hormones and reproductive function, cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Here’s where you come in: The EPA’s window for public comment closes June 30 – in less than a week – so now is the time to harness the power of activism and fight back. EWG has been on the forefront of this fight, but we need your help today to raise $20,000 by June 30 to stop Big Ag’s assault.

I know you care about protecting your family’s health and our environment. Will you step up today to support EWG’s advocacy efforts so we can mount an all-out campaign to take on Big Ag?

Click here right now to rush $10 or more to EWG and help fight this toxic takeover by Dow and Big Ag, keeping Enlist Duo out of your food and out of our environment.

Dow and other chemical goliaths are pumping millions into greasing the wheels of the political system to boost their bottom lines. When it comes to money, they have a big edge on us; as a non-profit organization, we rely on the support of individuals like you to keep up the fight.

EWG knows what it takes to win these battles. We‘ve proven ourselves a formidable opponent to Big Ag’s millions by fighting for GE food labeling laws like the one recently passed in Vermont and against a House bill that would roll back nutritional standards for school lunches. With your full support, we can win this fight, too.

That’s because we have something Big Ag lacks: you. Our strength and resolve must match their millions, and that means we need you to stand up for what’s right today.

Please, click NOW to send whatever you can spare directly to EWG before the June 30 deadline so we can keep fighting to prevent the approval of Enlist Duo.

Thank you for your quick action.

Sincerely,

Ken Cook
President, Environmental Working Group

I hope you will join the fight.  My concerns are evident, but in addition, I am concerned about the collapse of bee colonies that might be attributed to some newer pesticides on the market.  I cannot imagine the negative impact on food supply and cost, should the bee colony collapse worsen from where it is.

Re-visiting Philosophy

If you recall, it all starts with philosophy.  In the past two weeks, Dr. Mike has written two Daily Sprouts which are there to take on your philosophy.  One was titled Overdosed America, and the other… Milk.

If you begin your “Pursuit of Health” based off of a set of beliefs, swallowing the pill that goes along with abrupt messages, is easy.  I speak from experience, as I had no philosophical basis for my health, nor did I understand the need, nor did I accept the need when it was first placed in front of me.  Dr. Goldberg,  has/had (not sure if he is still in this capacity) the opportunity to teach 4th quarter Life University Chiropractic students about nutrition.  The first step to understanding blood sugar, inflammation, healthy fat… it was all brand new information to myself and at least 80% of our class which was about 300 strong at this point.

I can remember the conversations after class… “Do you believe he said Milk is unhealthy? What a crazy notion, he doesn’t look healthy to me, not sure I want to listen to anything he says.  Doesn’t he always look a little green?”  The shock was enough to offend us to the point where we had to attack him.  Judgement out of defense.  A common problem in our culture; those of you who have pursued health in the presence of co-workers have probably felt it.  The judgement because you have made healthy choices.  People don’t like change, they don’t like feeling that they were wrong.

Which is why spending some time looking at your health through some philosophical eyes, will win you a better opportunity in any discussion.  If you were to defend a health decision, could you?  Most commonly, our decisions for health are based out of fear.

I take a drug because I am fearful of what would happen without it.  I workout because I am fearful of the consequence if I don’t.  I eat better because I don’t want diabetes.  We even teach from a standpoint of fear many times.  It is often the only way to get your attention.  But then, we switch gears, and we move towards philosophy.  You have to if you hope to have any staying power.  Fear is only a good motivator for a moment.

Seriously, have you ever seen someone after a heart attack?  The average person will alter their lifestyle for 60 days following a heart attack.  A great article in 2005 in Fast Company discusses this problem.

…the knockout blow was delivered by Dr. Edward Miller, the dean of the medical school and CEO of the hospital at Johns Hopkins University. He turned the discussion to patients whose heart disease is so severe that they undergo bypass surgery, a traumatic and expensive procedure that can cost more than $100,000 if complications arise. About 600,000 people have bypasses every year in the United States, and 1.3 million heart patients have angioplasties — all at a total cost of around $30 billion. The procedures temporarily relieve chest pains but rarely prevent heart attacks or prolong lives. Around half of the time, the bypass grafts clog up in a few years; the angioplasties, in a few months. The causes of this so-called restenosis are complex. It’s sometimes a reaction to the trauma of the surgery itself. But many patients could avoid the return of pain and the need to repeat the surgery — not to mention arrest the course of their disease before it kills them — by switching to healthier lifestyles. Yet very few do. “If you look at people after coronary-artery bypass grafting two years later, 90% of them have not changed their lifestyle,” Miller said. “And that’s been studied over and over and over again. And so we’re missing some link in there. Even though they know they have a very bad disease and they know they should change their lifestyle, for whatever reason, they can’t.”

Man that is powerful.  But it isn’t changing people.  Because the philosophy hasn’t changed.

My philosophical basis comes from a desire to be well.  To be able to do things that people cannot, to have as much true health as possible.   I want to be honoring to God with my decisions, and helpful to others by my leadership, and my decisions.

I don’t want fear to be my guide, I don’t want to make poor short term decisions based on the moment of fear.  My philosophical bend is that this body, was made by a perfect creator, to do exactly what it needs to do… IF I give it a chance.  I have a leg with varicose veins, and they have worsened over time.  I believe that my theory is dead-on, so I work on it, and I have seen the problem ebb and flow based on my focus on the solution.  But, my focus wanes because my philosophical bend doesn’t have me fearing the outcome.  (I am stretching my hip in effort to relieve the pressure on my vessels, so that they have more easy flow).

In addition, I have a rash of some sort on that leg.  I developed it two years ago following poison ivy.  The dermatologists do not know what it is.  2 Years later, all we know, is that it is no longer a simple response to poison ivy, it might be an immune response to the poison ivy that simply hasn’t figure out it is time to leave (over-simplification), it might be some sort of unique localized eczema, or perhaps something in the arthritide fmaily.  No blood test shows anything, so our next step will be to biopsy, even though every dermatologist believes there will be nothing gained from a biopsy.

You see, I am not in fear, I know that we are providing an opportunity for healing, except for the varicose vein which might prolong the immune response.  Thus without panic, I am working towards the most plausible solution given a decent amount of research and professional opinion.  Sure, every professional wants to medicate, but none think the medication is a solution.  Just a way to suppress it temporarily.  So why?

Dig into your beliefs, see them through.  Be well and Be blessed!  – Dr. E

Fat The Final Word

No, I am not a genius, I began preaching high fat very early on in the minds of most people who have been reading me, but only because I joined in with those who had objected to low fat since it’s advent. I went along with others. Smarter than I, because I was just smart enough to recognize their more developed point of view.

As we wrap up our fat discussion, the most important thing that you can grasp, is to lose the low fat focus.  That needs to go away, now.  You should purposefully avoid buying all low fat labeled foods from this point forward.  The healing properties of fat are enough to change the face of health in America.  Why? Not because fat is a miracle cure, but because the lack of fat is a miracle disease starter; And we have mastered lack of fat.

So, let’s review what we have done so far with our fat discussion before moving forward.  In part one we discovered the why behind eating fat.  In part two we got further into the  discussion of fat for energy, in what I would call a mind blowing discussion in the energy.  This is why we can effectively fast an individual for thirty days without them suffering energy consequences.  With minimal carbohydrates used to fuel the brain, fat stores can fuel the body.

In part three the discussion moved to the source of fat in the diet. Getting away from dirty meats, and eating clean meats.  I do not promote vegetarian living, nor do I think it is wise.  Acceptable perhaps, but I do understand why it is so highly promoted in our culture.   However, every study that I have ever seen that differentiates omnivore vs herbivore lifestyle choices, has NEVER referenced the source of meat as a clean, grass fed or free range animal.  So I don’t buy them as being relevant to my life when they are studying commercial quality meats, but they are relevant to the average American, and the average American could be better off being a vegetarian, if unwilling to change the source of their meat.

The China study is a good example, loaded with wisdom when it comes to garbage meats, but little to say about healthy meats.  This is probably a good time to switch gears a little.  Even though this is a fat discussion, and I am discussing meat as a source of that fat.  I eat more plant based fat sources per day than meat.  Coconut oil, almonds, pecans are all part if my daily consumption.  In addition, it is the 13 servings of fruits and vegetables that I am committed to achieving on a daily basis (mostly veggies), so do not try to label me as an Atkins guy, that is not my way.

In part four we got into Leptin, that little hormone one that turns you into a fat burner. It is perhaps the most important hormone in your body that we know of at this time, there are many little hormones, but this guy rocks!  Learning about Leptin puts us in the right frame of mind to increase our trust of putting fat molecules in our body.

Lastly we got to part five,  discussing coconut and saturated fat, and all the awesome benefits of eating saturated fat, and that leaves us here, the collective.  Part six is the last part you’ll get to read without buying the E Book, and I guarantee if you have enjoyed these, you will love the whole book, with included video education.  It is a resource that you will want to reference as you make shopping and eating decisions.

The rest of this post, is to focus you in on Omega 3 fat.  ALA, EPA, DHA.  The big three of healthy fats.  And they are Essential Fatty Acids because you need these, but you don’t make these.  You have to eat them or supplement them.  I am a fan of eating first, and supplementing second.  You might think that supplementing is easier than having to eat these healthy fats, but if I were to tell you that you would want to strive to hit ten to twenty grams of this fat daily, that should send up an alert regarding your ability to suck down enough supplements.  Twenty 1,000 mg pills a day… You better eat some in your diet first, trust me, else you’ll be burping up fish oil all night long.

So what is the difference between ALA, EPA and DHA?  The source of the fat is one way to differentiate it.  The other is by its size, and ultimately it’s purpose.  When we dig into the research, we are led to see the difference between the heart health benefits as purported by most research.  That difference suggests that you will gain greater benefit from consuming EPA and DHA over ALA.

Seeds

hoto Courtesy of http://agapegeek.com/

EPA and DHA come from fish, whereas ALA comes from flax, seed, and green plants. The omega 3 then, that comes from eggs, or grass fed beef and dairy, is derived from these plant sources and are expressed in the fat or milk from the animals (ALA).  Most research is pointing to fish derived fat, in order to get the heart health benefits, however the research might not be convincing to some researchers.

“The science is tricky to interpret,” says Nestle. She argues that early humans evolved in an environment—and on a diet—that did not have an abundance of fish, yet they were fit enough to survive. “I think plant sources are highly underrated and that most of the fuss about omega-3s is about marketing, not health,” Nestle says.

Now whether or not early humans had access to fish is more difficult to ascertain in my mind, but I agree that fish sources might not have been as accessible as plant sources. I do however believe that the necessity of some EPA and DHA is trustworthy and deserves supplementation in most people, well, all people outside of Greenland Eskimos (fish eaters of all fish eaters).

Many are aware of the concerns of toxicity in eating fish rich in omega 3, especially the longer living species like tuna, or salmon. The longer a species lives, the more potential it has to absorb toxins like dioxins and PCB’s and of course, mercury. This is why we have moved to supplementation as a better source for omega 3. We have chosen Pure Pharma as our manufacturer because we trust the cleanliness, we trust the third party that certifies the molecular distillation process. There are other brands that would stand up to this test, but your first priority in supplementation, is making sure there is a process to clean the supplement.  Therefore, if you are buying cheap fish oil, you are making a grave mistake.

But let’s get back on track, I mentioned up to 20 grams a day. Why? How? Well, if you are eating EPA/DHA exclusively, I don’t think you need to hit that level. But if you are active, exercising hard, and wanting to be as healthy as possible, and if you are eating a larger percentage of ALA (vegetarian sources), from chia, flax, sesame, nuts… Then hitting 20 grams might just be necessary.

Which brings us back to the differences between the three oils. As we originally said, They are all essential fatty acids, so you need to eat them. ALA happens to have the ability to be converted in the body into EPA, but it takes at least five steps of conjugation. When further explored we see that brain function is more dependent on these long chain amino acids, EPA/DHA then on ALA. This is important when considering your efforts to increase omega 3 levels.

ALA is considered a parent precursor to EPA and DHA because of its convertibility, but only 8% has been shown to be converted into EPA on average and only 0-4% of DHA. This conversion can most definitely go higher in people consuming high levels of ALA (me), and especially in people who maintain lower levels of insulin (me), but is not likely to improve in anyone with elevated insulin (most of America). This is because a specific enzyme aids this conversion, and is often the limiting factor, and is further suppressed by high insulin levels (delta 6 desaturase is the enzyme).

What I just said, is that you probably cannot convert enough ALA to EPA and DHA, unless you are eating to reduce your insulin levels, and that your overall intake of ALA is very high.  So you might just need some supplementation.

The question that I have likely created, that has no direct answer, is how much do you need then?  And I cannot answer that without a consult.  But I can say, minimum average daily consumption of Omega 3 should be around 5 grams, and as stated earlier, top out around 20 grams.  If you aren’t supplementing with some level of Fish Oil, then I don’t really know what else to say other than start.  I would find it odd, when even the unhealthy cultural view, has been that fish oil is necessary, and that view has been around in culture for a decade at least.  Just stay away from the cheap garbage.  Thinking about it, my kids have been taking fish oil since they were born.

Thanks for digging in with me.  I’ll be posting the link for the book in a few weeks when I get it all organized.  Be blessed and Be well!  – Dr. E

Milk

I grew up on this stuff.  Loved it.  I put it in my cereal, dipped my Oreos in it, drank a glass of it with every spaghetti dinner (trust me, that’s the way to go), I consumed a lot of it.  I also had a lot of health problems as a child, with chronic ear infections and digestive issues.  Had I gone to a naturopathic doctor as a kid, milk is likely the first thing that would’ve been taken out of my diet.  My parents were never informed of the dangers of the industrialized milk that we find in our local grocery stores.  I’d like to follow the path that this sort of milk takes from feedlot to your shopping cart.  It will explain why milk is a heavily allergenic food, and not the super food we are led to believe it is by the dairy industry.

Brace yourself, because this is about to get icky.  Milk originates not on a farm, but in feedlots that are termed Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations a.k.a. “CAFO’s”.  These are large industrial feedlots that are designed to create massive amounts of milk at the lowest cost.  By now, you’ve probably noticed on some dairy products either or both of the phrases “rBGH free” or “antibiotic free”.  This is because a common method of milk production is to inject the cows with a genetically engineered bovine growth hormone.  The subsequent engorgement of the cow’s utters that ensues after injection causes mastitis to occur because the utters literally begin to rip at the seems. With any infection comes pus, and that pus cannot be kept completely out of your milk.  Since this has posed a new health problem, the FDA has an allowable amount of pus cells in your milk.  This is termed the Somatic Cell Count, and it should not exceed 1 million pus cells/ milliliter. But, to keep the levels below this new standard, it is necessary to use antibiotics.  These drugs can easily end up in your milk as well.

By now we have:

  1. Put the cow that produces your milk in unhealthy and confined conditions,
  2. Fed it an unnatural diet full of grains that skews the omega 3:6 ratio in the omega 6 direction, causing increased inflammation both in the cow and you,
  3. Injected it with “rBGH”, which not only gets into your milk and can increase your risk of diseases like breast cancer, but also there is overwhelming evidence that the genetically engineered hormone causes physical harm to the cows, including increases in infection and mastitis.
  4. Injected it with antibiotics to dilute the amount of pus cells down to 1 million cells per droplet of milk.  These antibiotics work in your gut as well, killing any good bacteria your gut or the milk may have had.

Before we go on, raw milk can definitely be considered a “super food”.  It contains an abundance of fat, protein, and carbohydrate… along with plenty of vitamins, enzymes, and nutrients.  Milk “does the body good” in other words. But, not after the dairy industry is done with it, because next comes pasteurization.

5.  Milk is pasteurized at high heat for an extended period of time to “kill anything that moves”, so to speak.   If it was alive and nutritious, or alive and harmful… it’s not anymore. Vitamins and enzymes are killed, while proteins and fats are denatured.  Nothing healthy is left in tact.
6.  Milk is also homogenized.  Your gallon of milk is not one gallon of milk from one cow.  It is mixed in with hundreds of other cow’s milk from different CAFO’s with different processes and medicating types.   If that doesn’t sound dangerous enough, research has linked the homogenization of milk to heart disease.

At the end of the day, milk can be very nutritious or it can be extremely detrimental to our overall health.  It all depends on the source.  It is also helpful to know where to find raw milk.  You can visit www.Carltonfarm.com to learn more about where you can find healthy living raw milk in the local area.

Hello from Vacation

I want to tell you briefly about Winter the Dolphin.  I have written about him in the past, and will write more in the future.  But the current, is to simply say “How cool that animals can inspire people!”

I was talking with one of my patients last week who recently authored her own book on marketing and leadership.  She was speaking in front of 1,000 ish people the week before, and she spoke on Maximized Living, and on our office, and on the 60 Day Turnaround.  She gave testimony to the effort to change, and the accomplishment of said change.  She said it was awesome.  People really poured out their appreciation for her testimony, for her leadership, and ultimately, her inspiration.

“People need to be inspired” – Me
“Yes, yes, the sure do!!” – Her

Back to Winter.  The Dolphin lost its tail several years ago now, and was given a prosthetic.  The dolphin is a smart mammal, but not as smart as we are.  Meaning, it was given a tail, it made use of it.  She fought it at first out of animal instinct.

beach6.15.14

Discomfort ruled her mind, and she simply said no.  But then with coaxing, she decided to move forward with the tail.  And though it hasn’t been anything more than a therapy for her spinal health, it has become the therapy that has been saving her life.

In my prior Daily Sprout about Winter, I mentioned that she would die before her time.  I know this because of her spinal degeneration.  But, I would guess that in these three years that I have now seen her, that she will likely live longer than I originally expected.  Because of her willingness to move forward.

We need her story.  So many of us are stuck in a rut.  Stuck not moving forward because of fear.  Fear of the unknown, of the unexpected, of great possibilities even.  Our fears are strong, and Winter is the inspiration that breaks us through.  More on this story to come, for now, be inspired.  Watch Dolphin Tale, and then look out for Dolphin Tale 2 coming soon!  Be well and be blessed!  – Dr. E

Overdosed America

In Time magazine last month, I was reading an article on our healthcare system when I came across a startling statistic.  Down in the bottom right-hand corner of the page in small print, it read “10% of Americans are on 5 or more drugs, while 50% of Americans are on 1 or more pharmaceuticals.”  This should jump off the page at you…  because we live in #1 superpower in the world with all the best resources.  We have the best hospitals, the best doctors, the best surgeons, the most research, the best technology, and the most money to pour into our medical care system.  Yet, more than half of our nation is afflicted by chronic disease, so much so that they need a drug to help manage daily. If you look at the rates of disease, they are going up every year.  Not only are they going up but also, diseases like cardiovascular disease are no longer exclusive to the older generations.  We see children on cholesterol lowering medications and blood pressure medications.  This is a real problem.  I think by now our medical healthcare leaders have recognized it as a problem, but because they don’t study where true health comes from in school sadly, they have only the option to stay the course.

We, as chiropractors approach your health in a radically different way than conventional medicine does. If we take a look at the definition of health as defined by the World Health Organization it says that “health is not merely the absence of symptoms and disease, but 100% function of the your physical, mental, and social well-being.”  If you break down the first half the definition and really understand what that says, it’s saying “Health isn’t just when you feel good”.  It’s important to know that it is very possible and very common to be very sick and feel fine.  Think of cancer and heart disease.  They are called the silent killers for a reason.  So, we cannot be reactive in our health.  We’ve got to be proactive, continually working at improving our health.  So how do you add health? You add function.

The key word in the definition is function.  That is our goal as chiropractors, to get you functioning at 100%.  Because, when you have 100% function you have 100% health.  So, we look first to the one system in the body that governs all healing and all function.  Your nervous system.  When we restore function to the nervous system, that’s when we see miracles occur.  We’ve had some exciting and quick restorations of health recently, and those are amazing to see.  But, more commonly we see slow progressive movement out of a place of dysfunction, to a place of function and health.  These are no less of a miracle. When a patient comes off of a medication we do a little dance in our heads because that person has been “unstatistic-isized” (that’s a good word, you can use it sometime… copyrighted, Dr. Mike).  The big picture now is that 150 million more people need to hear that they have the power to heal.  Anyone that has a nervous system has the same God given power to heal.

So, we go over these quite often I know, but only because it’s that important. The 5 essential steps to adding function and health are:

Maximized Mindset- It is vitally important to know that you can get healthy and that you can move from a place of dysfunction and lack of health, into a place of function and health.  Without this mindset, there is no hope.
