Xylitol, Erythritol and the rest of them…

The -itol family.  A strange sugar substitute that gets its own listing on the nutrition data on a food label, often surprising those who are used to looking at labels, but not used to seeing those terms.  Anything in that -itol family is an alcohol, and a sugar alcohol specifically if we consider xylitol, erythritol, malitol, sorbitol as the primary sugar alcohols used as sweeteners, we can see differences in their chemical composition that can have different impact on our body.

Xylitol has been highly regarded as a healthy sugar alcohol, exhiibiting properties that allow it to actually assist the health of the teeth and gums by providing a protective coating.  However, so often in major food companies, you will see xylitol added along with another compound.  Whether it be aspartame or sucralose.  So if you are buying “Trident” with a big “XYLITOL” label on the package, you had better read the other ingredients first.  Aspartame and sucralose have no acceptable dose in my book.

The two most commonly used sugar alcohol in non food production, are ethylene glycol and methanol.  Because they are sugar alcohols, they are sweet.  However, they are very toxic, and these are the common components used in antifreeze helping to make it both viscous as well as resistant to freezing.  It also makes it sweet… don’t try it.

So you might wonder why the concern?

First off, any processed sweetener, or food for that matter, where a molecule is extracted from a larger compound, leaves questions as to how well we can deal with that on its own.  All of the sugar alcohols have been shown to cause diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting and aches in some people.  I have had xylitol sweetened desserts that I made myself that have hurt my stomach, giving me cramping pains.  On the flip side, when I made my “Peppermint Hot Chocolate Cupcakes” on the Straight 60, I had put a significant amount of xylitol in, and I had no issue at all eating them.

Now, on that point.  On the straight 60 we want no spike in blood sugar.  Those cupcakes spiked my blood sugar… they gave me a slight head rush.  Why?  Sugar Alcohols still have carbohydrate in them.  Just not as much as sugar.  But if you eat a lot of it, you will spike your blood sugar the same.

Erythritol is to be used in low amounts, and you really shouldn’t touch the others.  Partly because of the carbohydrate content, but more so because they appear to be more dangerous to the intestine than xylitol.  As with any food that could be corn based (most sugar alcohol is), you should look for non-GMO labeling.

In the end, your best choice is always stevia as a sweetener that is non-carbohydrate.  Just watch out for Truvia, as they also have added erythritol.  So a serving every other day at most.  Thanks for paying attention and getting healthy, it makes my life have purpose!

What is CrossFit?

CFBM_Logo_SMAll

I just prepared a Power Point presentation that I will be delivering to a bunch of chiropractors tomorrow evening at Life University for a continuing education class.  “What is CrossFit?”  The funny thing to me, is that the power point is really serving one primary purpose.  To keep me within the allotted timeline.

I could talk on what CrossFit is, without any power point, prop, note, or cue for hours if given the chance.  I have to tell you, the only thing I really don’t like about CrossFit, is that I didn’t invent it.  Rarely do I get behind something concocted out of someone elses brain with so much commitment.  Chiropractic, CrossFit, and of course the one that trumps them all, Christ as Messiah.  I love Juice Plus, Beyond Organic and Genesis Pure for what they are doing with their products.  But CrossFit can really change a life in many ways, for the better of course, if you understand it.

I never loved my workouts.  I always loved the result.  This is very common in the world of CrossFit if you begin asking the right questions.  People will begin telling of how much they love the workouts.  Do you really love kickboxing?  I mean, I know you have fun, you think its cool, you like the feeling of power and the fitness it is giving you.  But do you really love it?  I think more people love kickboxing than they do step aerobics.  I think Yoga falls into the category with kickboxing… probably more love there than the average spin class. But in the end, CrossFit trumps them all.  And is better for you.  Why?  Thanks, I was hoping you might ask that.

The Ten Components of Physical Fitness – Via CrossFit

  1. Cardiovascular/Respiratory Endurance
  2. Strength
  3. Stamina
  4. Power
  5. Speed
  6. Agility
  7. Flexibility
  8. Balance
  9. Coordination
  10. Accuracy

That first ten had me trusting CrossFit early on.  I began CrossFit as my exclusive training program almost nine years ago in my basement, partly because of that list.  Partly because FRAN crushed me, and I didn’t want that on my resume.  But as I dug in more, it really occurred to me, that I had nver really understood fitness.  I had been a personal trainer, and I had a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, but when it came to understanding the idea of being able to “Do More Work Faster”, a common phrase in CrossFit… I was lost.

So, lets put you to the test, and see how it shakes out.  Who is more Fit:

1. Lance Armstrong types – cyclists, runners, triathletes who all focus on endurance (pretty much point # 1 above).
2. Arnold Schwarzenegger types? ( probably more 2 than anything, though an olympic weight lifter would argue that he isn’t strong)
3. Decathletes?  Sprinters? Swimmers?

You see, everyone in the list above is a specialist.  Though Outdoor magazine usually crowns triathletes as the fittest people on Earth, whereas CrossFit, crowns the winner of the CrossFit Games the fittest on earth.  Why?  Because they are in the business of building everyone into NON-SPECIALISTS.  People who don’t do any one thing exceedingly well, but who do everything better than average.

I am on that path in a small scale, I can Dead-lift 475#, I can run a 5k in sub 20 minutes, and I have done plenty of 24 hour adventure races that have been very successful.  Pull-ups, squats, sprinting…  I have a good amount of all of that. Thanks to CrossFit.

So what is the value to you?  Increased Growth Hormone, ligamentous stability, increased testosterone, greater balance, speed agility and strength; all provided from a simple focused workout.  It is infinitely scale-able, so  if you have a reason you cannot do it, it is actually only a reason why you can.  So, I think I am ready for tomorrow’s presentation now… Thanks!

Simple and Cheap 3 Day Cleanse

If you want a simple and cheap alternative way to cleanse, here it is:

Water from waking to noon, carbonated is good.  From noon to the end of the day, use 8 ounces of water with two slices of grapefruit, lemon or orange squeezed into it.  For a slice, use ¼ slices of lemon, 1/8 slices of orange, or 1/12 slices of grapefruit.

Carbonated is ok still.  At the end of the day, take three tablespoons of full fat greek yogurt, mixed with half a handful of berries and 1 cup of almond or coconut milk and blend them into a smoothie.  That is your end of the day drink.  More water after that if needed, and off to bed.

KEEP IN MIND: THIS IS NOT A CELLULAR WASTE REMOVAL CLEANSE  ONLY A GI TRACT CLEAN OUT!

Week 1 – The second 60

We are back at it. I was excited to get back into the diet and back into crossfit after a week vacation. You may be wondering how I did during my week off the diet. Well, I didn’t do great. I didn’t really hesitate to have any of the foods that are restricted on this diet. I think the issue for me was that I knew I only had a week to enjoy everything that I had missed. So, I went a little more overboard than I should have, but didn’t completely mess myself up. I think/hope that when I come off of this for a longer time (when I hit my final goals) it will be different knowing I don’t have to jam it all into one week, and knowing I wont be back on the diet again so soon.

One thing I did learn though, while eating my breads and sugary foods for that week, was that they didn’t satisfy me the way I had hoped/expected. There’s a Mexican restaurant we go to every time we’re in Hilton Head, it was one of the things I was most looking forward to cheating with. I was pretty disappointed this year. I’m not sure if my tastes have changed that much, maybe their food has changed, or maybe I really just like the experience of the restaurant (being by the water, outside, with my family) more than the actual food.  After eating there, it was the first time in a while that I had that all to familiar disgustingly stuffed feeling. This is something I definitely love NOT experiencing while on this diet. We had burgers one night. I had a roll and ketchup. Again, it wasn’t that great, not like I had thought it would/should be. Not everything was a complete disappointment. I did enjoy the pizza, ice cream, and occasional beer, but other than that the other sugars and grains weren’t that great.

So what did I learn from all of this? That strong yearning or craving I sometimes have for bread or sugar, won’t be satisfied even if I give in. I would most likely be disappointed in the food, and then more so in myself. Avoiding that awful feeling that comes with over eating breads and sugar is worth sacrificing those foods for.

I started my vacation at 208 lbs., I ended at 213 lbs. After 1 week back on the diet I’m back down to 208 lbs. Getting back into the diet was a little difficult but not nearly as hard as it was the first time around. For those of you just starting the diet for the first time, I know its hard, you probably feel awful. Hopefully by the time you read this, some of that has passed. Just know it gets so much better. You’ll start to feel better than you have in a long time. It never really gets easy, there is always the occasional desire for a sugary snack but you have the strength to do this. Thanks for reading.

Cholesterol and High Fat

The interesting thing about the cholesterol concern, is that in all research, consuming a diet higher in fat, and lower in sugar (or foods that easily turn to sugar, such as grains or root vegetables), shows a decrease in overall cholesterol.  Really interesting considering the mentality that has ruled the last 40 years, is that fat is bad.

The article in Time Magazine that I have been seen waving around wildly in recent weeks, “Eat Butter”, gives great credence to the eat high fat diet that we have been teaching.  My Weight Gain Challenge (yes, I am trying to put a few lbs of muscle on) showed my demonstration of my commitment to eating fat… and I referenced my last blood test results in the video:

EricFat

(click the image to see the video)

I have an audio book at the office as well, The Cholesterol Conspiracy, which is available for you to take home.  And together with the effort of this education, my hope is that everyone would be able to stop using statin drugs.  Completely.

So, the short of it is this –

Cholesterol must first be decided if it is to be feared.  I do not believe so.  I think that if you are eating correctly, and exercising, that your number…. is your number.  And treating it is futile and useless.

Secondly, if you are NOT eating and exercising correctly, the question is, will statin drugs reduce your risk of death.  I personally do not believe so.  I believe that the oxidation of that cholesterol is going to be your MAJOR problem.  And oxidation comes from the diet, and from activity, and exposure.  If your cholesterol is oxidized, I don’t believe you have any hope in avoiding blockages in your arteries.  You will get to a bad place.  If your cholesterol is not oxidized, then I don’t believe you should fear it at 250, 300, or more.  It won’t cause damage if not oxidized.

So, how do you know if it is or isnt?  Assume it is.  And eat 13 servings of vegetables and some fruits a day.  Sound impossible? By changing over time, you will get to where you need to be, but you must take it serious.  So, with that said, in the meantime.  We recommend Juice Plus, and this is ONE Major reason why.

Reducing oxidative stress is one of the main pieces of research that Juice Plus has had in its cubby, for years.  If you cannot find ways to get on that band wagon… then you should jump into the world of eating healthier immediately.  For many, much damage has been done, and you need to aggressively pursue the reversal.  Now.

So, back to the article title… if you move to a diet rich in fat, and a lifestyle rich in exercise.  You will not increase cholesterol long term, though it might happen in the short term.  Stay the course, and watch the change.  It is easier to accept not having fear of cholesterol, when the numbers look real good by the establishment standards.  In other words, even though I don’t go by their standards, I know it is hard to shake that belief that high numbers are bad.  So stay the course, and watch it change.  The sugar HAS to drop in order to see a positive change, especially free fructose.  Need to learn more – 60 Day Turnaround.

Get into the diet.

Zithromax and Januvia: Two Commonly-Prescribed Drugs Now Shown to Be Killing Patients

On the heels of the first 60 Day Turnaround Class – it is good to support the concerns about medications designed to “HELP” people with high blood sugar (Type II Diabetes), this is the new world of Januvia.

Here is a good portion of the article –

By Dr. Mercola

Recent news again highlights why you’d be well advised to heed early warnings about potentially dangerous drugs.

The first featured article reports that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now investigating a potential link between a commonly used class of diabetes drugs and pancreatic inflammation and pre-cancerous changes to the pancreas.1

The FDA is also adding a heart-risk warning to the antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin), better known as the Z-Pak.2

I’ve discussed the dangers of Zithromax before, most recently in December last year, and warned of potential dangers of Januvia all the way back in 2006 — the same drug now being investigated by the FDA for a potential link to pancreatic cancer. I also published a strong warning against this class of drugs last year.

In each case, I presented the evidence against the drugs long before any warnings were issued by the FDA, or action was taken to remove the dangerous drugs from the market.

In the case of Vioxx, my warnings preceded the drug’s eventual removal by five years, but it was too late as the drug had already killed over 60,000 people.

I have no doubt that these newer diabetes drugs will kill tens of thousands of people from cancer before action is taken. There is a good chance the death toll will even exceed that from Vioxx. Hopefully, you or someone you love will not be one of the victims, as you will have this potentially life-saving information.

“Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong – these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history.” ~ Winston Churchill

FDA Investigates Potential Cancer Link to Popular Diabetes Drugs

According to an FDA notice,3 posted on March 14, the agency is:

“Evaluating unpublished new findings by a group of academic researchers that suggest an increased risk of pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, and pre-cancerous cellular changes called pancreatic duct metaplasia in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with a class of drugs called incretin mimetics. These findings were based on examination of a small number of pancreatic tissue specimens taken from patients after they died from unspecified causes.”

This class of diabetes drugs, known as incretin mimetics, includes:

Exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon) Liraglutide (Victoza) Sitagliptin (Januvia, Janumet, Janumet XR, Juvisync)
Saxagliptin (Onglyza, Kombiglyze XR) Alogliptin (Nesina, Kazano, Oseni) Linagliptin (Tradjenta, Jentadueto)

Incretin mimetics (also known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, or GLP-1 agonist, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, or simply DPP-4 inhibitors), work by mimicking incretin hormones, reducing glucagon levels, and inhibiting the enzyme called DPP-4.

Incretins are a group of gut hormones your body produces naturally to stimulate the release of insulin in response to a meal. So, as your blood sugar rises, the drug prompts your pancreas to release insulin. It also prevents your pancreas from putting out too much glucagon, another hormone, which causes your liver to release stored sugar into your bloodstream.

Another mechanism by which it helps control your blood sugar level is by inhibiting DPP-4 — a protease (an enzyme that chops up protein chains) that, among other things, destroys the hormone GLP-1, which may explain why these drugs appear to be linked to increased cancer risk. (I’ll discuss this more below.)

The medication also slows the rate at which your stomach empties after you’ve eaten a meal, which may reduce feelings of hunger. This dampens the rate at which your blood sugar rises after eating.

The first drug in this class — Sitagliptin, manufactured by Merck and sold under the name Januvia4, 5 — received FDA approval in 2006.6 It is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for diabetes, which is why it will have such a devastating effect if it not stopped soon. Saxagliptin (Onglyza), another DPP-4 inhibitor, was approved in July 2009, followed by Linagliptin (Trajenta) in 2011. A number of additional DPP-4 inhibitors are currently under development, including a potentially disastrous once-a-week version.

Decision Day 2014… where do you stand?

Here it is, the time when we start digging in deep to your lives.  Whether you like it or not, its time for you to realize that your decisions need to change.  Join me, or simply watch me from afar hollering my lungs out, begging you to reconsider your ways.  Its funny, my wife thinks that long term my calling will pull me from chiropractic into ministry.  But I love using guilt as a means of motivation in health, but I hate the use of guilt in ministry.  So I don’t know how I could ever make that change.

Nonetheless, back to your health… CHANGE!  Seriously, I would love if I could pull everyone, with everything, from the burning building with chiropractic alone.  And as much as I have been impressed with chiropractic over the years.  I mean seriously impressed.  My belief in what can change from a chiropractic adjustment went from moderate to immense almost over night quite a few years ago.  It started with simple constipation in a baby, that child filled three diapers before leaving the office.  Then there were seizures that stopped, kidney function restored, allergies resolved… the answer to a myriad of problems solved through chiropractic.

However, even though we have seen miraculous change through chiropractic, I know without a doubt, that it is ONE of the necessary steps in order to become healthy.  Yes, become healthy.   Are you healthy?  Can I tell you one my pet peeves?  When somebody tells me they are healthy?  Really?  How can you be so certain?  Because you haven’t been diagnosed with something yet?  Don’t tell me that, what, you have never known anybody in your life who was diagnosed all of a sudden with a deadly disease?  Really? Where they healthy?  Where you shocked?  Not I.  I am never shocked in those instances anymore.  That is why I don’t consider myself healthy.  I consider myself to have great potential for good health.  Which is totally worth the effort, and that is where decision day comes in.

What is your effort?

What is your effort for health with your diet?

With your exercise?

With your nervous system?

With your toxin load?

With your SLEEP?

Ooooooh that is a very personal question.  I have told many of you that I have sacrificed this one area, knowingly, for a period of time… and that I have been doing everything I can to make up for it in other areas.  Well, the last month and a half, I have not been able to sacrifice this arena so easily.  Finding myself falling asleep in my chair more often, and this past week of vacation.  I went to CrossFit Hilton Head only ONE day, and relied on bike rides (not intense, these are family rides) and one day of tennis as my only workouts for the week.  Honestly, this is unheard of in my life.  The last time I went this long without more exercise was the seven days following the loss of my left eye sight.

But.  My wife had urged me to rest more this week, I read a new sleep study article in Time Magazine, and I actually felt like I could sleep more.  I was able to hit 8+ hours for four nights total, out of the seven I was away.  This was great!

My point – stop sacrificing your health in arenas where you can take charge.  Let me help you find a path to less risk.  Don’t get caught up saying, “ahhh, its only one donut… once a week, whats the big deal.”  And I say this because it isn’t the one donut, its the accumulation of all of the other things with the donut.  The things you DON’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT, that are slowly killing you.

Monday night, not at HealthSprout, we just moved the 60 Day Turnaround location to 110 Londonderry Court, Suite 120 right between The Garage and Momentum Church, you will find a location with a large room, and a bunch of chairs, with some AC going and a place for me to make some noise!  We are going to kick this off right… 7PM.  BE THERE!!

Blueberry Pie causes SERIOUS allergic reaction… Antibiotics blamed.

This is a straight re-print.  Click the link at the bottom to read the whole article…
FROM NBC NEWS –

Antibiotics Suspected in Girl’s Allergic Reaction to Blueberry Pie

A girl in Canada experienced an unusual allergic reaction to blueberry pie — she was not allergic to any of the pie’s ingredients, but instead reacted to antibiotic residue in the food, a new study suggests. Shortly after eating blueberry pie, the girl experienced facial flushing, hives and abnormal breathing. She was taken to an emergency room, treated with drugs used for allergic reactions, and recovered.

Although the patient was allergic to milk, an analysis showed the pie did not contain milk. Tests for allergies to other ingredients, such as blueberries, eggs or nuts, all came back negative. Further analysis showed that the pie contained residue from an antibiotic. The doctors tested the girl for an allergy to streptomycin, an antibiotic used as a pesticide on fruit. And, indeed, she reacted to streptomycin in much the same way as she had responded to the blueberry pie. The researchers could not confirm that the pie contained streptomycin specifically, but the results suggest the girl’s allergic reaction was caused by streptomycin-contaminated blueberries, the researchers said.

– They have been adding antibiotics and now specific viruses to our food sources.  The FDA allows this, the USDA allows this.  I personally have moved further and further to organic everything because of stories like this.  We are killing ourselves and we don’t realize it.  By 2050, I imagine the number of allergic reactions in our country will have jumped to 40-60% of all people will have something serious they need to avoid on a daily basis. – be well and be blessed, Dr. E

How to come OFF of the Straight 60…

Coming off of the Straight 60 (60 Day Turnaround) is just as hard as starting it.  Well, harder.  If you want to do it right that is.  I say this because actually starting isn’t that bad, you get motivated, you start.  I have people do it all the time.  But coming off of it, well, most come off before they plan, by simply cheating and quitting.  My goal is to be sure that IS NOT you!

However, coming off of it, if you want to truly maintain the value that you have achieved through your strict diet, is important.  The reason lies in the sensitivity that has been built up in your insulin receptors.  The whole point of the diet is to get to a level of sensitivity in your insulin receptors, that will allow for healing of your leptin, that will allow for function of just about every hormone in your body to improve.  The problem is that if you begin spiking blood sugar again, you lose the gains that you made.

Don’t spike your blood sugar.  Period.  You are all more in control than that, the problem is you don’t realize it.  And the problem is that you find the excuse of “I don’t know what to do after I finish the diet” to easy.  So, because I usually have about 15% of participants at the LAST meeting, compared to 120% at the first meeting  (yes, about 20 out of 100 walk away after the first workshop); I am going to give you the last meeting material right now.

Treat all glycemic servings, as glycemic servings, and therefore do not combine them in the same meal, and do not combine multiples in the same day if they could cause your blood sugar to elevate and stay elevated.   That is the spirit of the rule, now I’ll give you the letter of the rule.

A dessert, the bread from a sandwich, a bagel, a banana, a bowl of cereal, a portion of rice, an ear of corn, will all be looked at as a glycemic serving for this exercise.  So you should not have two of the aforementioned foods in the same meal, nor should you have them throughout the entire day separated by less than 4 hours of time.  Otherwise, you will raise your blood sugar, keep it raised, and begin undoing the incredible work that you have achieved over your 60 days.

I have commonly had patients tell me – “I know its working, because I have re-introduced all the foods that I wasn’t eating, and I am still losing weight, months later”!  Great.  Now keep it tight.  remember what got you here.  For one of three of you successful participants will push to far, begin eating cookies ( you need to realize a cookie, is grain – which turns to sugar, and sugar, which is sugar, which is why  cookies, cake, and other baked goods that are heavily sweetened are some of the worst offenders.  If the plan is to eat cookies, you should probably have no other glycemic foods that day).

The point is that if we are truly trying to change our lifestyle habits, then change our lifestyle habits.  I’ll interview Dr. Mark who is here on vacation with me in Hilton Head.  I don’t think he is doing awful, but I think compared to what my wife and I are doing in our one week hiatus, his needs refinement.  Especially because he is heading right back on it.  In reality, that should be more motivation NOT to break it, not fueling desire TO break it.  Make sense?

I have been around this rodeo a thousand times in the last decade plus.  I have seen many stories, I know the outcomes.  I do not call myself green, not at my own actions and responses, nor at yours.  Trust me, now that you have the rules, refer to them.  Otherwise, you won’t be committed.

When I say, my commitments are greater than my feelings at this moment, I do know that only TRUE commitments will win.  Anything else becomes frivolous, and you can easily talk yourself out of frivolous.

60 Days.  Join me in saying, My commitments are greater than my feelings at this moment.

Silver for bacterial fight

This is an interesting tid-bit of an article from Mercola – I am going to drop you right into the middle of it, so this is going to be rocky at first, but it will smooth out.  The point that I want to make, I am VERY cautious with supplementation (see Supplements and Chemicals), and I prefer to NOT treat anything, before the idea of treating anything.  I honestly believe treatment, in most cases, is our inability to trust God’s body created divinely and gifted to us.

So, this article stems from my inclusion of silver in my recommendation, and agreement of recommendation for treatment for my wife’s Lyme disease (the naturopaths of the world strongly recommend silver).  I was concerned as I felt like there was little research, but then… information like this began to pop up.  And I buy it.  So much so that we jumped on board and began carrying it, a clean product from Genesis Pure, that we think is a good one to stock on our shelves, so there you have it.

But – the interesting composition of this Mercola article, starts with understanding why certain viruses.  Here referred to as phages, from Wikipedia:

  1. A bacteriophage is a virus that infects and replicates within a bacterium. The term is derived from ‘bacteria’ and the Greek φαγεῖν phagein “to devour”. Wikipedia

Pretty cool, to devour.  So we have a virus, that enters the host cell, and replicates a bunch of “babies” so to speak, from the bacteria.  Take a look at this below:

Phages Are Actually an Important Part of Your Body’s Defense System

More than 90 percent of the DNA in your body is not yours, but actually belongs to a wide variety of microbes, and these findings just go to show how intricately tied your health is to the microorganisms that live inside you. And, while the word “virus” brings to mind all things “bad” for you, this is not necessarily true.

Another recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences8 found that many of these viruses (phages) actually serve as immune helpers—not enemies—and form an important part of your body’s defense system.9

Wherever bacteria reside, you will also find phages, because phages depend on bacteria for their survival. Phages specialize in breaking open and killing certain kinds of bacteria, hijacking them in order to replicate.

Most phages have hollow heads, which store their DNA and RNA, and tunnel tails designed for binding to the surface of their bacterial targets. According to phages.org, once a phage has attached itself to a bacterium:

“The viral DNA is then injected through the tail into the host cell, where it directs the production of progeny phages, often over a hundred in half an hour. These ‘young’ phages burst from the host cell (killing it) and infect more bacteria.”

The researchers found evidence that these phages partner with animals and humans to stave off bacterial infections and control the composition of friendly microbes in your body. The researchers speculate that some phages might protect bacteria that benefit their hosts (i.e. you), while destroying those that cause harm.

Which brings us back to the featured research, which suggests that these phages may also play a significant role in the rapid rise of antibiotic resistance… In essence, it would appear our zealous overuse of antibiotic drugs is causing these helpful viruses to boost the survivability of bacteria during the onslaught of a deadly foe—the antibiotic—only in this case, the end result is disastrous rather than helpful for the host… On the upside, these findings may confer new hope for effective treatments. According to Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D., Founding Director of the Wyss Institute:10

“Antibiotic resistance is as pressing a global health problem as they come, and to fight it, it’s critical to understand it. [These] novel findings offer a previously unknown way to approach this problem — by targeting the phage that live in our intestine, rather than the pathogens themselves.”

Colloidal Silver Dramatically Boosts Effectiveness of Antibiotics

The use of silver in the battle against pathogenic bacteria goes way back into antiquity. Hippocrates was one of the first to describe its antimicrobial properties in 400 B.C. Over the past few years, several studies have demonstrated the fact that silver is indeed one of the most effective agents in the battle against antibiotic-resistant super pathogens. Yet conventional medicine has largely dismissed such claims, relegating colloidal silver to the “woo-woo” section of medical myth.

They may be inclined to change their tune however, in light of the latest research1112 which shows that low doses of silver can make antibiotics up to 1,000 times more effective, and may even allow an antibiotic to successfully combat otherwise antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As reported by Medical News Today:13

“…[N]ot only did silver boost the ability of a broad range of commonly used antibiotics so as to stop mice dying of otherwise lethal infections, but it made at least one resistant bacterium succumb to antibiotics again. The addition of silver also broadened the effect of vancomycin, an antibiotic that is usually only effective at killing Gram-positive bacteria like Staph and Strep; aided by silver it killed Gram-negative bacteria such as those that cause food poisoning and dangerous hospital-acquired infections.”

For example, by adding a small amount of silver to the antibiotic, a powerful synergism occurred, and a urinary tract infection caused by tetracycline-resistant E. coli was successfully eradicated. Silver also helped save the lives of 90 percent of mice suffering with a life-threatening abdominal inflammation by adding it to the antibiotic vanomycin. In the group receiving vanomycin only, a mere 10 percent survived. The researchers discovered two mechanisms that help explain how silver can boost the effectiveness of an antibiotic:

        • Silver interferes with the bacteria’s metabolism, increasing production of reactive oxygen species14 (ROS); products of normal oxygen consuming metabolic processes in your body that, in excess, can damage cell membranes and DNA. Many antibiotics are believed to kill bacteria by producing ROS compounds, and here, the researchers found that adding a small amount of silver boosted the antibiotic’s ability to kill anywhere from 10 and 1,000 times more bacteria
        • Silver makes the bacteria’s cell membrane more permeable. This may explain the beneficial effect of silver on gram-negative bacteria, the cells of which are often impenetrable to antibiotics due to the molecular size of the drugs

My Note:

So, is it written on the wall?  Take Silver or die?  No… but perhaps any time you end up in a situation where you are taking an antibiotic (which should be few and far between), I would recommend silver 100% of the time.  In addition, any time in which you know there is bacterial replication happening, take silver.  Strep throat or scarlet fever.  Staph infections… or potential food poisoning.  And yes, this applies to the kids too.  Just smaller doses.  I am inclined to say there is a time and a place to start dosing the silver.

Be well and Be blessed, true knowledge… TRUE knowledge, will set you free.  Be on the alert for faux promises, as I am always slow to trust in this world that I operate in.  Snake oil exists at every turn.
